Abstract: What is the optimal size for online groups that use electronic communication and collaboration tools? Previous research typically suggested optimal group sizes of about 5 to 7 members, but this research predominantly examined in-person groups. Here we investigate online groups whose members communicate with each other using two electronic collaboration tools: text chat and shared editing. Unlike previous research that studied groups performing a single task, here we measure group performance using a test of collective intelligence (CI) that includes a combination of tasks specifically chosen to predict performance on a wide range of other tasks [72]. Our findings suggest that there is a curvilinear relationship between group size and performance and that the optimal group size in online groups is between 25 and 35. This, in turn, suggests that online groups may now allow more people to be productively involved in group decision-making than was possible with in-person groups in the past. Collapse

Abstract: We propose a research agenda on digital innovation units (DIUs) that refines the current -mainly descriptive-body of knowledge. Receiving great attention in practice, DIUs are dedicated organizational units that support and partly drive digital transformation in incumbent firms by leveraging new structures and practices that differ from those existing in the organization, aiming to promote various aspects of digital innovation. Utilizing DIU knowledge from a theoretical literature review, the resulting research agenda assists in structuring the field by synthesizing and connecting the partly isolated knowledge chunks. We illustrate a coherent picture of theorizing DIUs using Whetten's building blocks of theory. Researchers can draw on our findings to understand the emerging phenomenon of DIUs and use them as a stencil for future DIU research. It simultaneously may guide practitioners to understand the nature of DIUs and their role in a firm's digital transformation journey. Collapse

Abstract: This paper extends previous efforts to remedy the absence of "systems" theorizing within the information systems (IS) field. It addresses the question, "Why is the IS field struggling with sustainability issues?" By leveraging on the nascent foundations built for going back to the systems approach in IS, this paper develops a model for how current efforts in digitalization and digital transformation can support the building of sustainable futures. The bridge that links digitalization to sustainable futures is built on the principles of the system paradigm that provides leverage points for positive interventions that will make a difference to efforts in sustainability. Abstract: This article raises the level of discourse about the role of concepts in the information systems (IS) field. Concepts are the irreducible and indispensable elements of theory. It is through the invention of new concepts that disciplines are able to navigate uncharted waters. Without new concepts, not only will we be unable to comprehend unprecedented phenomena, we will not be able to tame their less than desirable implications. Concepts are distinguished from constructs, which IS researchers are more familiar with, but which enter the research process too late for any creative theorizing. Abstract: To improve organisational safety and enhance security efficiency, organisations seek to establish a culture of security that provides a foundation for how employees should approach security. There are several frameworks and models that provide a set of requirements for forming security cultures; however, for many organisations, the requirements of the frameworks are difficult to meet, if not impossible. In this research, we take a different perspective and focus on the core underlying competencies that high-reliability organisations (HROs) have shown to be effective in achieving levels of risk tolerance consistent with the goals of a security culture. In doing so we draw on high-reliability theory to develop a Security Culture Model that explains how a firm's supportive and practical competencies form its organisational security culture. To refine and test the model, we conducted a developmental mixed-method study using interviews and survey data with professional managers involved in the information security (InfoSec) programs within their respective HROs. Our findings emphasise the importance of an organisation's supportive and practical competencies for developing a culture of security. Our results suggest that organisations' security cultures are a product of their InfoSec practices and that organisational mindfulness, top management involvement and organisational structure are key to the development of those practices. Abstract: The collaborative utilization of data becomes increasingly important in industry and requires increased consideration of interoperability and data sovereignty aspects. Distributed systems play a decisive role in this context, which allow for a closer communication between the stakeholders involved and are characterized by the shared use of data and devices. At the same time new concepts emerge that enable a structured mapping of data. These include Digital Twins, which primarily allow a holistic digital representation of an entire asset lifecycle. Digital Twins offer significant potential for distributed systems and form a suitable basis for the collaborative utilization of an asset's lifecycle data. Although studies assume an increased use of Digital Twins in cross-company networks, they are still predominantly used as a purely company-internal concept. In the context of this publication, we demonstrate how to get started easily with the design of Digital Twins intended for use in collaborative distributed systems. Collapse

Abstract: Data quality (DQ) issues consume a significant part of many companies’ administrative and operational costs. To reduce such costs, companies often engage in master data management (MDM) initiatives to improve their DQ. MDM is, however, not a silver bullet that solves all data quality issues, but typically there are trade-offs between different data management strategies. Such trade-offs have not received much attention in the academic literature, and conceptualizations of the strategies for implementing MDM are sparse. Thus, with the aim of conceptualizing MDM strategies and understanding their consequences, this paper conducts a longitudinal case study at a large international hearing healthcare company in which an MDM initiative was implemented. Abstract: Social media provides great opportunities to engage with content based on commenting or liking. Especially confirmation bias was found to be highly influential in engaging with content. However, social media also imposes privacy risks on its users. Past research found that trust in the platform facilitates, while privacy risk beliefs reduce engagement on social media. However, research did not address how confirmation bias interacts with privacy concepts on social media. To address this research gap, we conducted a scenario-based study and manipulated confirmation bias in the context of COVID-19 vaccination. The results show that privacy risk beliefs are heavily diminished under confirmation bias to the point where trusting beliefs dominate. We provide a novel view of the influence on commenting and liking by entangling another piece of the privacy paradox. Collapse
