Abstract: Despite the consensus that considering social factors is as important as economic and environmental dimensions for long-term successful, sustainable energy development projects, there is a lack of quantifiable assessments in multi-energy simulation decision support systems. Therefore, we applied a design science research approach to develop an energy system simulator that includes all three dimensions of sustainability. Based on a rigorous literature review and expert interviews, we establish a framework for assessing social sustainability. We then implement the derived criteria and indicators in the open-access software NESSI and validate it in an applicability check for a Madagasi neighborhood. With our framework, we aim to provide guidance to researchers and stakeholders on incorporating the social sustainability dimension into their approaches, tools, and decision-making process. The user-friendly, web-based simulation software enables various stakeholders to explore the interrelationships of threefold sustainability in specific energy systems. Abstract: Digital trace data, along with computational techniques to analyze them, provide novel means to study how organizational phenomena change over time. Yet, as digital traces typically lack context, it is challenging to explain why and how such changes take place. In this paper, we discuss temporal bracketing as an approach to integrate context into digital trace data-based research. We conceptualize a framework to apply temporal bracketing in the analysis of digital trace data. We showcase our framework on the grounds of data from an onboarding process of a financial institution in Central Europe. We point to several implications for computationally intensive theory development around change with digital trace data. Collapse

Abstract: The lack of understandability of AI-based decisions is increasingly posing trust-related and regulatory problems. This also applies to the educational sector, where AI is a central element of modern automated essay scoring (AES) systems. However, current research on explainable AI primarily focuses on complex technical approaches. These explanations usually show a lack of understandability by the actual users, who often have no knowledge of AI. Based on an experiment with 245 students at a German university, we were able to show that even the basic principles of user interface design can improve understandability and hereby trustworthiness. Thus, the use of visual elements promotes understandability even when only little information is provided. Especially when providing further AI-specific information on the scoring of AES systems, however, it must be considered that in combination with visual elements an information congruency can be observed, leading to a cognitive overload in the worst case. Abstract: Before the COVID-19 pandemic, studying at German universities was traditionally dominated by inclass activities. During the pandemic, technical and organizational foundations were laid not only for teaching but also for exams. With the resumption of in-class events, the question is to what extent online exams will also be used in the future. Here, examiners and educational institutions can learn from the experience during the pandemic to increase the students' intention to participate in online exams in the future. To identify the problems encountered and derive lessons from them, a mixed-method approach was followed. For this purpose, 478 examinees were surveyed over 3 semesters using a quantitative questionnaire, followed by in-depth semi-structured follow-up interviews with 11 students. As a result, 5 recommendations for action could be derived, covering the topics of exam routine and familiarity, problem-solving, cheating, and teaching-examination arrangements. Collapse

Abstract: Finding the 'right' balance between centralization and decentralization in organizational processes, governance, and IT can be difficult. To navigate this tension field, organizations need to find (de)centralization equilibria that are often dynamic and depend on organizational strategy and context. However, little is known about how organizations should respond once an old equilibrium is punctuated or breaks down. In this paper, we thus conduct an inductive multiple-case study to investigate how organizations sustain and transition between (de)centralization equilibria. We synthesize our insights into a process model that paints the transition as an iterative recalibration process subject to centralization and decentralization tensions. Often, this process will require local and temporary compromises. Our work contributes a muchneeded process perspective to the IS literature on (de)centralization. Collapse

Abstract: This fundamentals article discusses efficient machine economies in which non-human agents can autonomously exchange information and value. We first identify criteria for achieving Pareto efficiency in such economies by drawing on the Coase Theorem. We then translate these economic criteria to technical requirements before developing a framework that characterizes four types of machine economies. We discuss real-life examples for each type to highlight key challenges in achieving Pareto efficiency. In particular, we highlight that machine economies with human involvement in economic interactions and governance face significant challenges regarding perfect information, rationality, and transaction costs. Machine economies without human involvement, in turn, promise a high degree of Pareto efficiency, but there are still many open questions, particularly regarding machine-enforced governance. We conclude with opportunities for future research on the interactions and governance in machine economies. Collapse

Abstract: Corporate open source governance aims to manage the increasing use of free/libre and open source software (FLOSS) in companies. To avoid the risks of the ungoverned use, companies need to establish processes addressing license compliance, component approval, and supply chain management (SCM). We proposed a set of industry-inspired best practices for supply chain management organized into a handbook. To evaluate the handbook, we ran a one-year case study at a large enterprise software company, where we performed semi-structured interviews, workshops, and direct observations. We assessed the initial situation of open source governance, the implementation of the proposed SCM best practices, and the resulting impact. We report the results of this study by demonstrating and discussing the artifacts created while the case study company implemented the SCM-focused governance process. The evaluation case study enabled the real-life application and the improvement of the proposed best practices. Collapse

Abstract: Data products (DP) are considered a key enabler of data-driven innovation. However, suitable methodologies and tools supporting DP design are still scarce. The emerging body of practitioner literature mostly focuses on analytics-based products and their technical design and architecture but lacks a more comprehensive product perspective on data. To address this gap, we propose the Data Product Canvas (DPC) as a visual inquiry tool that supports cross-functional teams in understanding, designing, and analyzing DPs. The DPC was developed in an iterative design science process involving focus groups with 15 global companies and was demonstrated for selected DPs. Building on the core ideas of the Business Model Canvas, the DPC outlines the critical elements for designing DPs focusing on three key themes: desirability from the customer perspective, feasibility from the technical perspective, and viability from an economic perspective. The DPC instantiates the design principles for visual inquiry tools and comprises a conceptual model, shared visualization, and directions for use. The DPC is the first step toward a systematic approach and shared language in designing DPs in ways that technical experts and business users understand. Collapse

Abstract: Data products are seen as important levers in repurposing the large volumes of data that are captured in organizations and in satisfying the increasing demand for analytics. Despite the increasing popularity of the data product concept, it remains unclear how data can be productized. This article proposes work system theory to study the implications data products have for how organizations manage their data. Adopting a multimethod approach involving case studies and focus groups, we identify three types of data products and analyze how organizations coordinate their resources to build work systems around each data product type. Our findings contribute to the ongoing discourse on scaling data and analytics capabilities to repurpose and consume data effectively.(Meierhofer et al. 2019), recent studies have shifted toward a more customer-centric view that drives data product requirements, enables re-use of data for unknown-unknown use cases (Dehghani 2021) and further packages the products with governance elements (Joshi et al. 2021). This indicates a growing interest in how data is actually "productized", which if done well, can lead to the creation of valuable data products.As mentioned, the newness of the debate on data products means we still know little about what "productizing data" means. Considering the literature, we distinguish four themes (Table 1): (i) production process focusing on the interaction between various resources while creating data products, (ii) the tools and platforms that support the storage and delivery of data products, (iii) data packaging that underscores key social and organizational elements, and (iv) value generation that focuses on customer satisfaction.
