Abstract: Evermann and Rönkkö (2023) have provided an excellent overview of recent findings relating to the use of Partial Least Squares (PLS). Their overall message is that if researchers decide to use PLS, they need to ensure that they follow best practices to reduce the possibility of obtaining misleading or erroneous results. We generally agree with many of the specifics of their assessment, but go further to recommend against the use of PLS. In particular, we demonstrate exactly how PLS introduces biases, arguing that the algorithm violates accepted norms for statistical inference. Our final recommendation is for the Editors-in-Chief of top IS research journals to convene a task force to assess the advisability of continuing to accept articles where PLS is used for publication in IS journals. Abstract: Media misinformation and disinformation continue to threaten the foundation on which scientific, political, and other socially relevant decisions are made. This paper examines games designed to serve as interventions for changing player’s behaviors in misinformation and disinformation media. It analyzes the games formally through two common communication intervention theories for behavior modification and education: inoculation theory and transportation theory. The media theories are first framed in the context of games generally, then they are applied across six research focused games ; Harmony Square, Bad News, Fake It To Make It, Factitious and FakeYou!. The work offers theory-informed observations and recommendations to support improved efficacy for existing and future playable media. Collapse

Abstract: While decentralized finance (DeFi) has the potential to emulate and, indeed, outperform existing financial systems, it remains a complex phenomenon yet to be extensively researched. To make the most of this potential, its practitioners must gain a rigorous understanding of its intricacies, as must information systems (IS) researchers. Against this background, this study uses a multivocal literature review to capture the state of research in DeFi. Thereby, we (1) present a consolidating definition of DeFi as we (2) analyze, synthesize, and discuss the current state of knowledge in the field of DeFi. We do so while adapting the blockchain research framework proposed by (Risius and Spohrer, Business & Information Systems Engineering 59:385–409, 2017). Furthermore, we (3) identify gaps in the literature and indicate future research directions in DeFi. Even though our findings highlight several shortcomings in DeFi that have prevented its widespread adoption, our literature review shows a large consensus on DeFi’s many promising features and potential to complement the traditional financial system. To that end, this paper is presented to encourage further research to mitigate the current risks of DeFi, the payoff of which will be an enriched financial ecosystem. Collapse

Abstract: While online labor markets (OLMs) provide many benefits including flexibility and data driven AI matching systems, gender and other social biases have been shown in OLMs, and research demonstrates AI can also perpetuate bias. However, previous OLM research assumes bias is static over time and independent of the AI algorithm. To help design OLMs that minimize the detrimental impact of biases on marginalized social groups, we investigate the interaction among individual characteristics and AI sources of biases over the long-term and evaluate auditing strategies using an agent-based simulation model. We also empirically investigate hiring bias using a cross section of data from a popular online labor market, and we use this data to inform our simulation. We then plan to develop and empirically test a framework to evaluate AI fairness and the interaction of different biases on OLMs and test an audit strategy to mitigate biases. We plan to extend the literature on OLMs by integrating fairness and intersectionality research to evaluate the impact of biases. Collapse

Abstract: In this paper, we respond to Grover and Lyytinen (2022). We agree with them that the advent of the digital age is calling for a reconsideration of the role of theory and theorizing. We also think their proposal does not go far enough. The time is ripe to question the role of theory in our field more fundamentally. We propose to instead focus on establishing IS research as a platform through which we can collect, organize, and provide access to digital trace data from various sources to analyze contemporary socio-technical phenomena. We believe that such a move allows us to more fully unleash the unique socio-technical competences of our field in the digital age. Collapse

Abstract: The paper theorizes the emergence of technoinstitutional inertia within public organizations. Specifically, it analyses the impact of technoinstitutional inertia on policymaking in emergency time. The paper extends the literature on inertia in organizations to shed light on the inertia triggered by both human actors and technology. Technoinstitutional inertia provides useful instruments to better understand how imbrications between technology, policies, and institutions, shape the design and the delivery of public policies. The paper builds on the findings from a case study of the Peruvian public sector, analyzing the techno-institutional inertia which shaped the provision of public services to contrast the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The paper offers valuable insights for policymakers who aim to adopt ICT-based policies in contexts characterized by scarcity of time and resources. Collapse

Abstract: Customer-generated images (CGIs) on e-commerce platforms have been widely adopted as a promotional tool to persuade customers into purchases. Despite their prevalent applications, the effect of CGIs on customer postpurchase satisfaction has not been extensively examined. This study postulates that CGIs could cause expectation disconfirmation and reduce product uncertainty for customers, therefore making their effect on subsequent product ratings complex. We leverage multiple methods and data sets to gain a better understanding of this problem and underlying mechanisms. We employ a difference-in-differences model to empirically test our hypotheses and find that CGIs lead to a decline in subsequent ratings compared with product ratings not exposed to CGIs. Further heterogeneity analyses demonstrate that high CGI review rating and high aesthetic quality exacerbate the negative effect, whereas reviewer face disclosure could alleviate the negative effect. Through cross-product analyses, we find that the negative effect is more prominent for experience goods (e.g., women’s dresses) than for search goods (e.g., lightning cables). Finally, the underlying mechanism is further validated through a laboratory experiment that shows participants experience significantly higher expectation and more negative disconfirmation in the CGI group with high review ratings, whereas uncertainty reduction effect is insignificant, which collectively explains the decline of subsequent product ratings. These findings suggest that platforms and retailers should be aware of the potential negative effect of CGIs on the rating dynamics and take appropriate measures to circumvent it. Abstract: While the data amount grows exponentially, the number of people with analytical and technical skills is only slowly increasing. This skill gap is putting pressure on the labor market and increasing the need for personnel with these skills. At the same time, companies are forced to think of alternative ways to empower their less-skilled workforce to take on Business Intelligence and Analytics (BI&A) tasks. One promising attempt to address these challenges may turn to the concept of guidance. However, the current body of research on guidance in BI&A systems is scattered and lacks a structured investigation from which future research avenues can be derived. To address this gap, this article analyzes five categories, namely BI&A phases, guidance degree, guidance generation, user roles, and interactivity form. Abstract: About Sun Tzu's Art of War, lots of research have been done. However, most of them were fragment studies, that's, done by sampling one or two management doctrines. About its core, the system thinking, few has been conducted using a General Systems Theory. What's more, these studies were in most cases a theoretical one. The objective of digital transformation (DT) was re-establishing organization's business model through innovation by using digital technologies to sharpen organization sustainable competitiveness, it is just like a war champaign. This study is to use case study method to show how Sun Tzu's System Thinking could be used in DT to defeat potential rivals to maintain competitive advantage. The combination of theoretical study and practitioner application will be of high value both to those practitioners in digital transformation process and contribute academically to research methods in the future study of Sun Tzu's Art of War. Abstract: Fake news has led to a polarized society as evidenced by diametrically opposed perceptions of and reactions to global events such as the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and presidential campaigns. Popular press has linked individuals’ political beliefs and cultural values to the extent to which they believe in false content shared on social networking sites (SNS). However, sweeping generalizations run the risk of helping exacerbate divisiveness in already polarized societies. This study examines the effects of individuals’ political beliefs and espoused cultural values on fake news believability using a repeated-measures design (that exposes individuals to a variety of fake news scenarios). Results from online questionnaire-based survey data collected from participants in the US and India help confirm that conservative individuals tend to exhibit increasing fake news believability and show that collectivists tend to do the same. This study advances knowledge on charac­ teristics that make individuals more susceptible to lending credence to fake news. In addition, this study explores the influence exerted by control variables (i.e., age, sex, and Internet usage). Findings are used to provide im­ plications for theory as well as actionable insights. Collapse
