Abstract:While access and adoption issues related to online health management tools (OHMT) have been studied in healthcare contexts, questions remain about whether and how their use impacts patients' perceptions of healthcare. Drawing on technology affordance and media synchronicity frameworks, we explore how the existence of multiple chronic conditions (MCC) and differences in usage pattern due to patient's generation impact these relationships. Utilizing HINTS data, this study provides empirical support for a positive relationship between utilization of electronic personal health records (e-PHRs) and healthcare quality perceptions, albeit with a caveat that patients with greater healthcare needs as well as millennial and younger generations do not seem to enjoy the same benefits from increased use of e-PHRs. Furthermore, asynchronous patient-provider electronic communication is yet to achieve positive perceptions of better healthcare quality for most users. This research bears implications for personalization and customization of OHMT to account for variations in patients' healthcare needs and usage patterns. Collapse

Abstract: Physician Review Websites (PRWs) help users select physicians by providing both structured and unstructured data on physicians and patients' experiences with physicians. In this paper, the adequacy of the available in­ formation on PRWs is investigated. An empirical study is conducted to understand the information that patients seek from PRWs through a survey instrument administered to 344 patients. A topic modelling approach is then employed on 666,551 text reviews of patients using data from a popular PRW in India to discover information available on the PRWs. Combining both approaches, it is found that 12 out of 25 topics are either unavailable or only partially available, indicating an information gap. Two topics which constitute the information gap are then utilised to conduct a full factorial experiment on 153 respondents using a Latin Square design. Experimental results demonstrate that adding relevant information improves the physician selection process. Our work con­ tributes to the healthcare IS literature on online physician selection and the role of information availability. The results will help PRWs and hospitals decide how to restructure information on their websites and devise stra­ tegies to nudge patients to write reviews highlighting the desired information. Abstract: Online Health Communities like YouTube offer mental health patients an alternative channel to learn about mental illnesses, the treatment path to follow, and to share their experiences. For many patients who are reluctant to seek professional help, a video on mental health uploaded by a content creator may serve as a substitute for a counsellor. Our work aims to develop an understanding of the relationship between language formality and social support and provide normative guidelines for content creators on social media platforms. Using two transformer-based deep learning classification models, we determine the degree of language formality or informality present in the content, and three dimensions of social support in the comments. We then utilize propensity score estimation to establish the causal effect of (in)formality on the dimensions of social support for 994 videos and 3,10,157 comments. Our findings indicate that informal speech increases emotional support, leading to better health outcomes. Collapse

Abstract: Downloadable contents (DLCs) are additional in-game contents that developers release periodically to sustain the interest of users. In this paper, we study the effect of these DLC releases on the usage of a game by analysing actual usage data from 241 DLCs released over a period of 12 years. We use a quasi-experimental analysis to determine the effect on usage, and also investigate the effect of different DLCs categories on usage. We also study the effect of the different categories of game developers, indie and AAA, on the relationship between DLC release and usage. Results indicate that different categories of DLCs have distinct effects on usage. We also find that the release of DLCs of indie games have a greater impact on usage as compared to AAA games. We compare and contrast our results with the extant literature and provide insightful guidelines to game developers on managing DLC releases. Collapse

Abstract: Agent-Based Models (ABMs) have long served to study self-adaptive systems and the emergence of population-wide patterns from simple rules applied to individuals. Recently, the rules for each agent have been expressed using a Fuzzy Cognitive Map (FCM), which is elicited from a subject-matter expert. This provides a transparent and participatory process to externalize the `mental model' of an expert and directly embed it into agents. However, software technology has been lacking to support such hybrid ABM/FCM models at scale, which has drastically limited the scope of applications and the ability of researchers to study emergent phenomena over large populations. In this paper, we designed and implemented the first open-source library that automatically accelerates ABM/FCM models by leveraging the CUDA cores available in a Graphical Processing Unit. We demonstrate the correctness and scaling of our library on a case study as well as across different networks representing agent interactions. Collapse

Abstract: Many software companies are adapting their traditional development processes to incorporate agile practices. In this context, it is necessary to count on expert knowledge to evaluate different agile practices and configure them according to project needs. However, this expert knowledge is scarce, difficult to validate, and time-consuming, since it is applied manually. As a solution, the paper presents a model-driven approach, called SIAM, which automatically generates guidelines for the adoption of agile practices through the combination of different development methods. SIAM is supported by a meta-model architecture to implement a knowledge repository that characterizes method configuration decisions, which can be reused in different development projects. SIAM has been implemented in a tool suite that facilitates the specification of models and the identification of issues during the definition of the development processes. The approach has been successfully applied to reconfigure an industrial development process with agile methods, showing that the effort required for tailoring agile practices according to organizational standards is considerably reduced. Abstract: Effective collaboration within and between organizations requires efficient adaptation to unforeseen change. We study how parties build relational contracts that achieve this goal. We focus on the “clarity problem”—whether parties have a shared understanding of the promises they make to each other. Specifically, (a) a buyer and seller play a trading game in several periods; (b) they know their environment will change but do not know how; and (c) before any trading occurs, they can reach a nonbinding agreement about how to play the entire game. We hypothesize that pairs whose initial agreement defines a broad principle rather than a narrow rule are more successful in solving the clarity problem and in achieving efficient adaptation after unforeseen change. In our baseline condition, we indeed observe that pairs who articulate principles achieve significantly higher performance after change occurred. Underlying this correlation, we also find that pairs with principle-based agreements were more likely to both expect and take actions that were consistent with what their agreement prescribed. To investigate a causal link between principle-based agreements and performance, we implement a “nudge” intervention that induces more pairs to articulate principles. The intervention succeeds in coordinating more pairs on efficient quality immediately after the unforeseen change, but it fails to coordinate expectations on price, ultimately leading to conflicts and preventing an increase in long-run performance after the shock. Abstract: Globally, millions of individuals are victims of sex trafficking and are compelled to perform sexual acts through force, fraud, or coercion. Law enforcement agencies, non-profit organisations, and social entrepreneurs increasingly are using information technology as a resource to locate, identify, and rescue victims and find, arrest, and convict traffickers. In this qualitative case study, we partnered with a non-profit organisation that trains law enforcement officers to use information technology to counter sex trafficking. For this research study, we observed training courses, interviewed law enforcement officers and non-profit staff, and reviewed technology usage logs and other data sources. Some officers readily used the new information technology post-training, while others failed to use the new technology. Using conservation of resources theory as a sensitising lens, we identify two factors affecting the use of new technology post-training: the level of organisational resources available to individuals and the individual's perceptions of the new information technology as a resource. With these findings, we develop the Resources Model of Information Technology Use to explain how perceptions of organisational and technology resources affect information technology usage patterns and outcomes. Abstract: Digital workplace technologies and changing demands of the workforce drive digital workplace transformation (DWT). In response, the human resources (HR) function implements people analytics (PA), which can either enable traditional HR reporting or facilitate novel personalized employee experiences. This either/or in leveraging PA induces a shift in the HR function's identity. Building upon paradox theory and using the concept of identity, we investigate the occurring tensions due to the implementation of PA. We use a two-staged qualitative research approach, consisting of an ethnography at a company undergoing DWT, extended to insights from 18 expert interviews from the field of PA for theoretical generalization. We make two contributions. First, our findings suggest two HR identity archetypes: HR as resource managers vs. HR as growth catalyst. Second, we extend the paradoxical tension between these two archetypes to DWT literature questioning the pertinent view of identity metamorphosis. Collapse

Managing the inner workings of collective intelligence approaches for wicked problems -An assessment model and evaluation. Abstract:Ill-defined and complex problems that affect multiple stakeholders with potentially conflicting perspectives are often referred to as wicked problems. The utilization of collective intelligence (CI) via web-based platforms is a promising approach for addressing such wicked problems. The management of these information systems would benefit from evidence-based decision support regarding facilitation and improvement efforts. However, to date, there is no suitable model to guide such efforts. Existing approaches address specific applications or cover certain assessment areas but do not provide a holistic perspective. Meanwhile, research offers substantial insights into best practices for addressing wicked problems and running CI applications. This paper develops an assessment model comprising five central success dimensions for information systems that address wicked problems. Their subdimensions and associated measurement metrics allow for evidence-driven facilitation and improvement of CI applications for wicked problems. Apart from the model's capability to improve future runs and processes, it also offers the potential to provide immediate insights for facilitation efforts during runtime. The model was validated with a platform dealing with the assessment of risks presented by global climate change. This evaluation generated strong evidence for the model's applicability and usefulness.Henner Gimpel is the Chair of Digital Management at the University of Hohenheim, is a member of the Research Center for Information Management (FIM), and is the academic director of the Digital Leadership Academy.
