Augmenting Social Bot Detection with Crowd-Generated Labels

Abstract: Social media platforms are facing increasing numbers of cyber-adversaries seeking to manipulate online discourse by using social bots (i.e., social media software robots) to help automate and scale their attacks. Likewise, some social media users can identify social bot activity at varying degrees of confidence. In this research, human reactions to social bot messages are used to augment existing social bot detection capabilities. Speech act theory is used to inspire a framework for assessing the credibility of instances where users identify potential bot activity, as not all user responses are of equal credibility for assisting with the bot detection task. The framework is then operationalized through deep learning methodologies to develop a computational system for identifying social bots. Real-world performance and practicality of the developed framework is demonstrated on a live, crowd-sourced data set collected from a real-world social media platform. Results show that consideration of crowd reactions to suspected bots can significantly improve bot detection performance. Furthermore, consideration of speech acts to evaluate crowd reactions can even further augment the system’s performance, although speech acts themselves are not necessary to observe performance boost through crowd intelligence. Abstract: Disasters and crises are a part of human existence. While upsetting the normal operations of societies and revealing the inherent fragility of infrastructure and social order, they also push us to rethink "the normal" way of living and working. At this moment, IS research on the experiences of businesses in times of war as an extreme crisis is very limited. Taking the case of Ukrainian businesses, we ask the following research questions: How have organizations adapted to war discontinuities and built resilience? and How have the experiences of remote work from the pandemic contributed to building organizational resilience in times of war? Analyzing semi-structured interviews with managers from Ukrainian businesses through the lenses of adaptation theory, remote work discontinuities, and capability-based model of organizational resilience, we present the types of discontinuities experienced and the adaptation strategies used by the companies in addressing them. Our findings show that the resilience of Ukrainian companies has its roots in agile management, continuous communication and collaboration, experiences in using digital technologies during the pandemic, and international community support. The results also indicate the organizations continuously coping and adapting, re-coping, and re-adapting while anticipating unexpected events, which calls for developing a more dynamic resilience model. Abstract: Models that capture the heterogeneous perspectives of individuals are essential to test tailored interventions, such as behavior change interventions. Although Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCMs) have a rich history in depicting systems, they were either developed at an individual level through facilitated sessions, or created for an entire population through machine learning. The need to automatically create individual FCMs from data has started to be addressed, but the proposed solution was computationally prohibitive and thus could not be deployed over a large population. In this work, we use a state-of-the-art evolutionary algorithm (CMA-ES) to create individual FCMs by leveraging the growing availability of longitudinal data. We demonstrate on a real-world case study that our solution is both accurate and fast to compute. Our experiments on synthetic data also show that our approach can scale to a large number of measurements, but it cannot currently be applied to highly noisy datasets. Collapse

Abstract: This study draws on Basic Human Values theory to investigate why shifts in values occur and how they influence telehealth adoption during a crisis. A literature review of the initial adoption and post-adoption of telehealth during Covid-19 shows how tensions between the personal growth value of patient autonomy and the personal security value of interpersonal care influence continuance in adopting telehealth. Findings show the different potential of values in generating innovative telehealth solutions. Abstract: Social media apps like TikTok have influenced the daily lives of billions of users. Such apps are forms of network goods and subject to so-called network externalities. They offer a social utility that increases with the number of app users. The social utility can be divided into a strong-tie utility (STU) and weaktie utility (WTU) as it may emerge from strong ties (e.g. close friends) and weak ties (e.g. friends of friends) respectively. To investigate their influence on the usage behaviour more closely, we develop a research model and conduct an online experiment (N=291) for collecting data for seven popular social media apps. The results prove that strong and weak ties can influence users in two ways: providing utility and exerting social pressure. While the level of these effects varies for the tested apps, the utility has a generally greater influence on the intention to use. Collapse

Abstract: A Walrasian competitive equilibrium defines a set of linear and anonymous prices where no coalition of market participants wants to deviate. Walrasian prices do not exist in nonconvex markets in general, with electricity markets as an important real-world example. However, the availability of linear and anonymous prices is important for derivatives markets and as a signal for scarcity. Prior literature on electricity markets assumed price-inelastic demand and introduced numerous heuristics to compute linear and anonymous prices on electricity markets. At these prices, market participants often make a loss. As a result, market operators provide out-of-market side-payments (so-called make-whole payments) to cover these losses. Make-whole payments dilute public price signals and are a significant concern in electricity markets. Moreover, demand-side flexibility becomes increasingly important with growing levels of renewable energy sources. Demand response implies that different flexibility options come at different prices, and the proportion of price-sensitive demand that actively bids on power exchanges will further increase. We show that with price-inelastic demand there are simple pricing schemes that are individually rational (participants do not make a loss), clear the market, support an efficient solution, and do not require make-whole payments. With the advent of demand-side bids, budget balanced prices (no subsidies are necessary) cannot exist anymore, and we propose a pricing rule that minimizes make-whole payments. Abstract: The emergence of low-code/no-code (LCNC) platform technologies and the resulting increase in citizen development programs are facilitating the democratization of the design, development, and deployment of digital solutions. Citizen developers, non-technical employees who leverage LCNC platforms, are at the heart of this trend. While many firms perceive LCNC and citizen development as a crucial component of their digital transformation strategy, little is known about the evolving roles in this field or the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA). To address this knowledge gap, we processed 113,106 job postings published on Indeed.com. Our topic modeling methodology identified 34 KSA topics and classified them into the three domains platform, business, and technology. We contribute to research by empirically demonstrating which competencies are required to successfully work in the LCNC field. Our findings can guide individual professionals and organizations alike. Abstract: In order to ensure energy affordability, we propose a design-oriented behavioral research study with the aim of helping low-income tenants to develop an efficient energy behavior by increasing their energy self-efficacy. We propose to compare different digital interventions in field tests to understand, in an unfiltered way, what helps low-income tenants to be able to reduce their energy costs. We thereby contribute towards understanding how the vulnerable group of low-income tenants with their limitations and needs regarding their energy consumption behavior can be effectively supported digitally.
