Abstract: IT carve-out projects are complex and cost-intensive components of M&A transactions. Existing research sheds little light on the determinants of IT carve-out project complexity and/or its effects on divestor performance. Instead, research has focused on the post-acquisition IT integration project and acquirer performance. This paper presents the first divestor-centric model of IT transactions from the divestor to the acquirer when a Business Unit in a Multi-Business Organization (MBO) is carved out and integrated into another MBO. The model explains how divestor business and IT alignment pre-conditions contribute to increased IT carve-out project complexity. Such complexity increases IT carve-out project time to physical IT separation and creates IT stranded assets, which decrease post-divestment business, IT alignment and divestor performance. The current recommended strategy of adopting transitional service agreements (TSAs) to handle IT carve-out complexity is compared with two new proactive strategies derived from the model. TSA-based strategies restrict the divestor from both decommissioning IT stranded assets and reconfiguring its IT assets to support its new post-divestment business strategy. The two new strategies address IT carve-out complexity without incurring the negative effects from adopting TSAs. Collapse

Abstract: Financial risk in supply chain finance (SCF) is defined as the possibility that suppliers fall into liquidity crisis due to delayed payment. Predicting financial risk is important for supply chain stability. In this paper, a financial risk prediction model is developed using XGBoost and then evaluated by applying buyer transaction behavior data. We further construct single and hybrid models, respectively, and compare their performance using receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC), area under the ROC curve (AUC), and F1-Score. Last, feature importance and partial dependence plots (PDPs) are employed for model interpretation. The results show that XGBoost model can effectively predict potential financial risks, and shed lights on managers’ payment practice. This paper is one of the few studies that develop new models to examine financial risks in SCF empirically. Collapse

Abstract: Various visualization design guides have been proposed and evaluated through quantitative methods that compare the response accuracy and time for completing visualization tasks. However, accuracy and time do not always represent the mental workload. Since quantitative approaches do not fully mirror mental workload, questionnaires and biosignals have been employed to measure mental workload in visualization assessments.The EEG as biosignal is one of the indicators frequently utilized to measure mental workload. Nevertheless, many studies have not applied the EEG for mental workload measurement in the visualization evaluation. In this work, we study the EEG to measure mental workload for visualization evaluation. We examine whether there is a difference in mental workload for the visualization designs suggested by the previously proposed visualization design guides. Besides, we propose a mental workload estimation model using EEG data specialized for each individual to evaluate visualization designs. Collapse

Abstract: Mixed or inconsistent opinions are commonplace in online reviews. Prior research shows that review inconsistency has different effects: its product-level manifestation in the form of inconsistent product ratings is associated with poorer sales, but its review-level manifestation in the form of two-sided arguments is associated with greater helpfulness and credibility evaluations of the review. In practice, consumers rarely consult all reviews or just a single review before they make purchase decisions. Instead, they often read a set of featured reviews (i.e., a review set) and some additional reviews if needed. Focusing on inconsistency in a review set, we introduce a new type of inconsistency across reviews that does not exist within a single review or at the level of product ratings: cross-review incoherence, which refers to disagreement among reviewers about specific product features. Based on cognitive dissonance theory, we explore how and when cross-review incoherence influences helpfulness and credibility judgments of the review set, revealing that consumers’ reactions to such incoherence might operate differently beyond an individual review. In addition, we examine how and why consumers’ judgments of a review set influence their purchase deferral—that is, the likelihood of making a buy-or-not-buy decision immediately after consulting the top reviews or deferring it until after obtaining more information. Two laboratory experiments demonstrate that cross-review incoherence increases purchase deferral via more negative evaluations of the review set that, in turn, reduce attitude certainty. In addition, the negative effect of cross-review incoherence on review set evaluations is weaker when the reviewers provide more contextual information behind their opinions. These findings deepen our understanding of inconsistency across multiple pieces of information; reveal the consequences of review evaluations during an understudied stage of consumers’ decision-making process; and provide critical implications for review platforms, companies, and reviewers. Abstract: Link recommendation, which recommends links to connect unlinked online social network users, is a fundamental social network analytics problem with ample business implications. Existing link recommendation methods tend to recommend similar friends to a user but overlook the user’s diversity preference, although social psychology theories suggest the criticality of diversity preference to link recommendation performance. In recommender systems, a field related to link recommendation, a number of diversification methods have been proposed to improve the diversity of recommended items. Nevertheless, diversity preference is distinct from diversity studied by diversification methods. To address these research gaps, we define and operationalize the concept of diversity preference for link recommendation and propose a new link recommendation problem: the diversity preference-aware link recommendation problem. We then analyze key properties of the new link recommendation problem and develop a novel link recommendation method to solve the problem. Using two large-scale online social network data sets, we conduct extensive empirical evaluations to demonstrate the superior performance of our method over representative diversification methods adapted for link recommendation and state-of-the-art link recommendation methods. Abstract: Is collective agency important for information security management? Drawing on social cognitive theory, this paper proposes four efficacy-shaping factors as antecedents of workgroup collective efficacy and examines its influence on workgroup information security effectiveness. For empirical analysis, a structural model is proposed with theoretical support. 306 individual responses were collected from 33 branch offices of a law enforcement organization in South Korea. Our results support the focal hypotheses that workgroup collective efficacy has significant positive relationships with its antecedents as well as workgroup information security effectiveness. This indicates that the exercise of collective agency is important in enhancing information security effectiveness in organizations. Further theoretical and practical implications will be discussed. Abstract: The abrupt closure of offices during the COVID-19 lockdown has allowed millions of workers to discover advantages of remote work and led to disruptive transition from conventional office settings to remote arrangements even as the pandemic recedes. However, for firms to determine whether or not to offer remote work as a permanent working arrangement, it is essential to understand how workers value and respond to remote working opportunities. In this paper, we construct a novel dataset that comprehensively details firm-level job postings and individual-level wage records and employ difference-in-differences estimation (i.e., logit and panel regression) to examine the impact of remote work on workers' turnover and salary outcomes. Our main analyses indicate that, after the lockdown has been lifted, the propensity of switching is positively influenced by provision of remote work. Furthermore, workers who switch to remote work accept lower wage than those in onsite workplaces. Collapse

Abstract: Given consistent evidence of its social benefits but questions about its market viability, this paper examines the conditions under which workplace democracy can be understood as a “real utopia”; a viable form of organization that is both economically productive and socially welfare enhancing. Conceptualizing democratic firms as organizations with formally distributed authority and collectivist norms, we argue that democratic firms will operate more productively in knowledge intensive industries, compared with conventional firms in the same industries, because they give authority to those with relevant knowledge and encourage intrafirm information sharing. Next, focusing on intrafirm wage inequality as a key social welfare outcome, we argue that knowledge-intensive sectors are also settings where the benefits of workplace democracy are likely to be greater. Knowledge intensive industries tend to generate greater intrafirm inequality through the adoption of market-based employment policies and reliance on unique expertise, yet the formal structure and collectivist norms of democratic firms are likely to limit these mechanisms of inequality, generating inequality reductions. We test these hypotheses with longitudinal linked employer-employee data from French cooperatives and conventional firms, including firms that shift organizational structures over time. We find robust support for our hypothesis about economic performance and moderate support for our hypothesis about social performance. Abstract: Overload derived from the wide use of multiple information and communication technologies (ICTs) has become increasingly pervasive. Nevertheless, our understanding of the nature of ICT-mediated overload and how such overload affects individual productivity in multi-ICT context is limited. This study classifies ICT-mediated overload into congruent and incongruent types based on content relevance. Drawing upon transactional the­ ory of stress, we then develop a holistic model to examine their impacts on individuals’ productivity through cognitive appraisals and coping responses. Results of our empirical study of 439 respondents with ICT usage experience illustrate that congruent information overload can lead to challenge appraisal, which in turn facili­ tates individuals’ innovative and routine uses of ICTs, ultimately improving their productivity; incongruent in­ formation overload and incongruent interruption overload induce hindrance appraisal, which further results in avoidant ICT use, thereby impairing productivity. This study contributes to the research on overload in the context of multiple ICTs by advancing our understanding of the nature of different types of ICT-mediated overload and by uncovering the mechanisms that govern the impacts of ICT-mediated overload on in­ dividuals’ productivity. Abstract: Increasing the social category diversity of work teams is top of mind for many organizations. However, such efforts may not always be sufficiently resourced, given the numerous resource demands facing organizations. In this paper, we offer a novel take on the relationship between social category diversity and team performance, seeking to understand the role resources may play in both altering and explaining the performance dynamics of diverse teams. Specifically, our resource framework explains how the effects of social category diversity on team performance can be explained by intrateam resource cognitions and behaviors and are dependent on team resource availability. We propose that in the face of scarcity in a focal resource (i.e., budget), diverse (but not homogenous) teams generalize this scarcity perception to fear that all resources (i.e., staff, time, etc.) are scarce, prompting performance-detracting power struggles over resources within the team. We find support for our model in three multimethod team-level studies, including two laboratory studies of interacting teams and a field study of work teams in research and development firms. Our resource framework provides a new lens to study the success or failure of diverse teams by illuminating a previously overlooked danger in diverse teams (negative resource cognitions (scarcity spillover bias) and behaviors (intrateam power struggles)), which offers enhanced explanatory power over prior explanations. This resource framework for the study of team diversity also yields insight into how to remove the roadblocks that may occur in diverse teams, highlighting the necessity of resource sufficiency for the success of diverse teams.
