Abstract: Prescriptive analytics systems (PAS) represent the most mature form of business analytics (BA), offering advanced decision support. However, current research predominantly focuses on technical facets while neglecting social-technical design aspects. A pluralist research methodology was employed to address this gap, starting with a systematic literature review of over 200 papers. We used these papers to derive a concept matrix of fundamental elements that guided the development of a taxonomy conceptualizing the interplay and collaboration between humans and machines in PAS-based decision-making processes. Based on this taxonomy, we identified four recurring PAS archetypes with salient design characteristics: Informative, executive, adaptive, and autonomous PAS. Our findings have important implications for the BA community, including the need to investigate design options for executive, adaptive, and autonomous PAS; the underrepresentation of the human perspective; the missing links to the broader organizational landscape; and the potential for interpretable machine learning and reinforcement learning in PAS. Abstract: In electronic business (e-business), innovative technologies such as blockchain technology (BCT) have a fundamental impact on activities along the value chain. The perspective of the value chain in the context of blockchain technology has been explored, but contributions are mainly focused on supply chain management and tangible goods. Hence, the e-business domain lacks research, even though many beneficial features for service value chains and the transaction of intangible goods exist. Therefore, the current paper focuses on (1) how and why value chain activities are supported by using BCT and (2) how the stakeholder’s responsibilities change for value chain activities that are affected by BCT. A multiple case analysis of four e-business cases, i.e., Theta, OpenBazaar, Presearch, and Crypviser, is conducted. Based on four ideal value chains by Wirtz (2019) (cf. 4C-Net Model), steps that depend on BCT or that are supported by BCT are outlined. By conducting a cross-case analysis, we derive eight blockchain technology propositions that enlarge the existing knowledge base. Collapse

Abstract: With increasing competition in the online market, companies frequently apply "dark patterns" to steer user behavior in ways that benefit the company but may harm the user. To date, consequences of dark patterns use are rather unknown. Prior research demonstrated positive effects (e.g., an increase in acceptance rates) and negative effects (e.g., negative emotions) of dark patterns use. To explain these contradictory effects, we draw in information manipulation theory. In a survey experiment we confronted participants with the dark patterns scarcity and sneaking. The results indicate that exposure to dark patterns increases perceived violations of communication maxims, which increase perceived user manipulation. This, in turn, reduces attitude toward the website and website design. Further, the results show that perceived user manipulation is significantly higher for users with low familiarity with online shopping. We plan to validate the findings in a field experiment to be conducted in the near future. Collapse

Abstract: The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) has led to a competitive race among digital and incumbent players to establish IIoT platforms. However, despite the undisputed potential of the IIoT, a first wave of IIoT platforms failed around 2018, with GE's Predix being the most prominent one. Nevertheless, building upon valuable lessons learned, the IIoT platform market continued to grow significantly. We now experience a second wave of IIoT platform failures, with companies like Siemens, Google, and SAP divesting or restructuring significant parts of their IIoT platform. Acknowledging this, we revisited the IIoT platform graveyard to challenge and extend existing lessons learned. Hence, we interviewed major IIoT platforms and customers that were impacted by IIoT platform failures. We identified six key learnings that we integrated into a preliminary model for IIoT platform growth, highlighting evolutionary steps for successful platform growth. These findings provide practitioners strategic orientation for establishing IIoT platforms long-term. Collapse

Abstract: Critical Infrastructures (CI) are systems that are essential for maintaining vital societal functions, and their disruptions can have a significant negative impact on a nation's well-being. CI has become the focus of many digital advancements, resulting in them becoming increasingly intertwined. Therefore, a more holistic approach to infrastructure management must be adopted, in which CI typically organize themselves as a System of Systems (SoS). The main issue that CI organizations face is the unclarity of how to make their IT function as one system. IT-Governance (ITG) is critical to guide the implementation of SoS within individual organizations. However, current literature acknowledges the lack of research on Inter-organizational IT-Governance (IoITG), which is necessary for creating a digital SoS. This researchin-progress paper first proposes a definition for digital SoS for CI and then highlights the need for further research on IoITG capability in the context of SoS for CI. Collapse

Abstract: Currently, people are accustomed to cyberloafing, or nonwork-related cyber activities during working hours, and cyber-life-interruption, or work-related cyber activities during nonworking hours. Job or personal demands no longer rely on either work- or nonwork-related domain resources. We propose a dynamic demands-resources model regarding cyberloafing and cyber-life-interruption to elucidate their direct and interaction effects on work and nonwork exhaustion. By identifying these dynamics, this study can enable both employees and em­ ployers to utilize these activities for better management of employee experiences in the technology-enabled flexible working environment, which, in turn, would bring about significant implications for employee job performance. Abstract: This paper investigates how Critical Success Factors (CSFs) can be used to determine appropriate measurement items for design and assessment of ERP Maturity Models (ERPMMs). Our systematic literature review answers: RQ1 What are the primary dimensions of CSFs that can be used as measurement items for ERP maturity models? and RQ2 What are the additional dimensions of CSFs that can be used to evaluate the maturity of organisations using new generation ERP systems? Results reveal most ERPMMs can be categorised into specific CSF dimensions, and different sets of measurement items can be derived from these dimensions. The main contribution of this research is a CSF classification framework with eight dimensions: Governance, Culture, Technology, Operation, People, Project, Performance, and Products & Services. Our CSF classification framework will help researchers and practitioners to select a set of suitable CSF measurement items to assess maturity levels of organisations using new generation ERP systems. Abstract: Collective intelligence (CI) captures a team’s ability to work together across a wide range of tasks and can vary significantly between teams. Extant work demonstrates that the level of collective attention a team develops has an important influence on its level of CI. An important question, then, is what enhances collective attention? Prior work demonstrates an association with team composition; here, we additionally examine the influence of team hierarchy and its interaction with team gender composition. To do so, we conduct an experiment with 584 individuals working in 146 teams in which we randomly assign each team to work in a stable, unstable, or unspecified hierarchical team structure and vary team gender composition. We examine how team structure leads to different behavioral manifestations of collective attention as evidenced in team speaking patterns. We find that a stable hierarchical structure increases more cooperative, synchronous speaking patterns but that unstable hierarchical structure and a lack of specified hierarchical structure both increase competitive, interruptive speaking patterns. Moreover, the effect of cooperative versus competitive speaking patterns on collective intelligence is moderated by the teams’ gender composition; majority female teams exhibit higher CI when their speaking patterns are more cooperative and synchronous, whereas all male teams exhibit higher CI when their speaking involves more competitive interruptions. We discuss the theoretical and practical implications of our findings for enhancing collective intelligence in organizational teams.
