Abstract: Virtual worlds are currently receiving renewed attention. Notably, advances in immersive technologies, such as virtual reality headsets, allow users to experience interactions with virtual objects by using their bodies in virtual worlds referred to as metaverses. Studies on metaverses have suggested that enabling users to query their environment using their body, or embodiment features, facilitates learning. While such studies' scope includes users' experience in a metaverse with embodiment features, scarce attention has been brought to the role of the perception generated toward themselves through this experience. This study aims at highlighting the role of IT identity in explaining learning effectiveness in metaverses and the impact of embodiment features on this process. We propose to investigate this using an experiment. The findings will contribute to the IT identity stream and the literature on virtual worlds. It will also inform practitioners involved in the design of metaverses. Collapse

Abstract: Value creation in the financial services sector has been fundamentally transformed by digitally born financial technology (FinTech) companies. FinTech companies synthesize information systems with financial services. Given its disruptive power, the FinTech phenomenon has received great attention in academic research, practice, and media. Still, limited systematic research provides a structure and holistic view of FinTechs’ success. Aiming to enhance understanding of the factors enabling FinTech success, we classify success factors across extant scientific literature on distinct FinTech business model archetypes. Our analysis reveals that the “cost–benefit dynamic of the innovation,” “technology adoption,” “security, privacy, and transparency,” “user trust,” “user-perceived quality,” and “industry rivalry” are crucial factors for FinTech success and can be seen as “grand challenges” for the FinTech ecosystem. In addition, we validate and discuss our findings with real-world examples from the FinTech industry and two interviews with stakeholders from the FinTech ecosystem. Our study contributes to the knowledge of FinTechs by providing a classification system of success factors for practitioners and researchers. Collapse

Abstract: The number of organisations that operate multiple business models continues to increase. However, operating multiple business models can be complex, as they often need to be harmonised within a broader portfolio due to their interdependencies. This complexity is exac­ erbated by the increasing role of digital technology and data – enabling new opportunities but also coming with related paradoxes. This paper examines the growing body of literature on business model portfolios revealing that they are evolving into a strategic tool for value creation and business performance. While there are concomitant value opportunities arising from com­ plementarities and synergies, there are also paradoxes emerging from tensions that need to be considered. Employing a developmental literature review, we present a synthesis of recent empirical case studies to gain insight into the management of business model portfolios. Firstly, we identify different strategic intents: diversifying, sensing, and complementing. Secondly, we distil different themes for value opportunities and paradoxes and categorise them according to a business model framework. Thirdly, we identify and discuss the role of digital technologies and data for business model portfolios. Overall, we contribute to an emerging stream of studies on multiple business models in relation to strategy, innovation and technology. By adopting a ho­ listic perspective on the management of business model portfolios, we explore strategic intent, value opportunities and paradoxes, and discuss how portfolios can play a role in strategic man­ agement and planning. Abstract: With the advance of technology proceeding at an astonishingly rapid pace, along with the progress in the fields of medicine and clinical medical practice, it is a challenge to stay current and address all of the challenges that arise at the nexus of these two fields. This editorial aims to increase opportunities for authors to publish health-related research to IS audiences and support the efforts of researchers who conduct studies crossing the IS and healthcare disciplines by providing insights into what has been published in CAIS in the past and what types of healthcare IS research would be of interest going forward. She completed a fellowship at MIT in Systems Design and Management. Her research includes adoption and diffusion of technology, as well as cybersecurity, ethics, and safety engineering in healthcare organizations. Her work has been published in Journal of Strategic Information Systems, Information, Technology, and People, Information and Management, Communications of the Association for Information Systems, Information Systems Frontiers, and IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, among others. She currently serves as an associate editor for Communications of the Association for Information Systems.Rebekah Eden is a senior research fellow in the University of Queensland Business School, Australia. She is an interdisciplinary researcher whose research intersects information systems and digital health. Abstract: Organisations increasingly rely on algorithms to exert automated managerial control over workers, referred to as algorithmic control (AC). The use of AC is already commonplace with platform-based work in the gig economy, where independent workers are paid for completing a given task (or “gig”). The combination of independent work alongside intensive managerial monitoring and guidance via AC raises questions about how gig workers perceive AC practices and judge their legitimacy, which could help explain critical worker behaviours such as turnover and non-compliance. Based on a three-dimensional conceptualisation of micro-level legitimacy tailored to the gig work context (autonomy, fairness, and privacy), we develop a research model that links workers’ perceptions of two predominant forms of AC (gatekeeping and guiding) to their legitimacy judgements and behavioural reactions. Using survey data from 621 Uber drivers, we find empirical support for the central role of micro-level legitimacy judgements in mediating the relationships between gig workers’ perceptions of different AC forms and their continuance intention and workaround use. Contrasting prior work, our study results show that workers do not perceive AC as a universally “bad thing” and that guiding AC is in fact positively related to micro-level legitimacy judgements. Abstract: Cyber criminals continue to look for new targets which they can exploit. A recent addition to their list of targets are nonprofit and faith-based organizations within communities. These organization generally do not have the budget to hire a cybersecurity professional or pay for cybersecurity services. A program to reach this sector to assist them with their cybersecurity posture was launched called Project Xander. This program is designed to utilize students from area colleges and universities to provide assessment and consulting services for organizations within the sector. The pilot program was run in the 2021-2022 academic year and was successful and is now being expanded to include other communities and academic institutions. It addresses a need in communities in a sector that has been underserved and that has historically not had the resources to implement robust cybersecurity programs. Collapse

Anchoring on Historical Round Number Reference Points: Evidence from Durable Goods Resale Prices

Abstract: This paper examines how people price the resale of durable goods in systematically biased ways. We show across four studies that the anchoring effect of durable goods’ prior sales prices on subsequent valuations is discontinuous at psychologically salient round number reference points (e.g., $10,000 increments) because these numbers create qualitative differences in how people perceive values below them versus values at/above them. Resellers set disproportionately larger subsequent prices when previous prices move from just below round number thresholds (e.g., $349,000) to those at or just above these thresholds (e.g., $351,000). The findings show that buyers who pay a price just below a round number, therefore, may sacrifice money because they receive disproportionately less when reselling the good. Market forces only partially attenuate this pricing bias, but valuator experience seems to play a moderating role. Archival data show that home buyers who previously paid just under a $10,000 reference point subsequently listed their homes for about 1.8% (over $3,700) less on average than did buyers selling comparable homes who previously paid at or above a round number threshold. This drop is observable controlling for home characteristics and the general relationship between previous and current prices. Three experimental studies looking at housing and used car markets replicate these findings, highlight the mechanism, and increase confidence in causality. Market mechanisms and the negotiation process attenuate discontinuities by about 30%, but lower initial listing prices persist to final sales prices. We find additional weak evidence suggesting that valuator experience may attenuate intergenerational pricing bias. Abstract: The devastating outbreaks of COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted social and economic sustainability of the world, particularly in routine services that require physical interactions, such as dining services. With the retrospective analysis via case study, we identified three cases in dining service from USA, Indonesia, Taiwan, respectively, and investigated their service systems with the Service-Dominant Logic to understand the interactions among actors and how they integrated resources to cope with the pandemic. We identified their resilient practices heavily relied on various types of social capital to quickly respond to demand shifts, reconnect value networks, and leverage ICTs for marketing and sales. These resilient practices could be used for guiding small and medium enterprises to cope with devastating unexpected crises, taking COVID-19 as an example. More cases collected and analyzed from corresponding regions in the follow-up study could further conclude a more general causal relationship in resilience toward the theory for resilience. Collapse
