Spillover in Sharing Economies: Network Effect of Bike-sharing Services on Home-sharing Performance

Abstract: Bike-sharing provides a convenient transportation layer with its inter-connected bike station network. However, the economic value spilled by the network is unknown. This study fills this gap by empirically connecting two separate yet interrelated sharing services: bike-sharing and home-sharing. Using data from CitiBike and Airbnb, the study conducts a difference-in-difference analysis to examine the effect of new bike-sharing entries on local home-sharing performance. The results show that new bike-sharing entries increase nearby Airbnb properties' monthly revenue by $127 (9.59%). We attribute this performance improvement to the heterogeneous effects of network position. New bike stations differently improve the location attractiveness of Airbnb by riching destination choices, reducing travel costs, and avoiding traffic congestion, which account for a marginal revenue improvement of $1.41 (per reachable station), $0.27 (per second saved), and $17.36 (per dollar saved). The study also uncovers the moderating effect of first/last mile connection and property luxuriousness. Our findings have important implications for both bike-sharing network design and home-sharing marketing. Collapse

Abstract: Person-to-person (P2P) followership is an important aspect of major open source software (OSS) development platforms. In this age of social media platforms, P2P followership has significantly shaped the way users engage in OSS development by facilitating the establishment of connections among OSS users. Despite the prevalence of P2P followership, less is known about the impact of OSS project initiators’ P2P followership nodes on their project popularity. This is a particularly important gap considering the low rate of OSS project success. We posit that OSS project initiators derive information and influence benefits from the quantity and connectivity of their P2P followership nodes, explaining the popularity of the projects initiated. We determine the con­ nectivity of OSS project initiators’ P2P followership nodes based on the nodes’ reach and importance. To test the hypotheses, we use a large panel dataset collected over 24 months from GitHub. The findings indicate that the quantity of OSS project initiators’ P2P followership nodes including followers and followees has a positive effect on their project popularity. Moreover, such an effect is mostly dependent on the connectivity of the OSS project initiators’ P2P followership nodes in such a way that highly connected P2P followership nodes do not impact influence benefits but they increase information benefits. We discuss the theoretical and practical impli­ cations of our findings. Collapse

Abstract: Despite the increasing popularity and demand for analytics projects, the uncertainty in goals and dynamic processes involved in these projects behoove IS researchers to further understand the project management techniques applicable to these projects. In this paper, I illustrate the process of carrying out an analytics project using an agile project management approach. In this project, following the project management concept of "tailoring", fsQCA is used to analyze the effective treatment configurations of traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine for diabetes. This illustrated process could be potentially used in various small-sized analytics projects carried out by IS researchers, and R&D efforts. Abstract: The use of Information Systems (ISs) utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) has expanded over the last decades, which has sparked discussion around AI's impacts on societal structures, such as democracy. Yet, in the light of existing research, our understanding of the relationship between AI and democracy is limited. Hence, this paper suggests approaching this relationship from the perspective of AI ethics. A framework dubbed AIDEM is suggested to a) gain deeper understanding of the relationship and b) enable justified critique and further suggestions for ethical AI to avoid uncontrolled erosion of democracy. The framework is tested by analysing ethical implications of the Spanish AI strategy in relation to Rawls's theory of justice and their potential impacts on deliberative democracy in the Spanish context. The analysis shows the AIDEM framework has potential to achieve its dual objective, although an inclusion of various other perspectives is still needed to complement the present analysis. Collapse

Abstract: Information systems (IS) projects are notoriously difficult to control, especially under conditions of uncertainty. This difficulty is particularly pronounced for senior IS managers, such as CIOs and IT Vice Presidents, who tend to have scarce time and limited project-related knowledge but are ultimately held accountable for IS project performance. Focusing on this under-researched controller category, the study at hand contributes new insights into the enactment of controls by exploring how IS project uncertainty affects senior IS managers’ control-style choices, as well as how it moderates the impact of such choices on process and product performance. Based on a survey of 150 senior IS managers, we find that IS project uncertainty increases managers’ use of an authoritative control style but is unrelated to their use of an enabling control style. Further, in IS projects characterized by uncertainty, an authoritative control style is found to be effective for process performance, whereas an enabling style is found to be effective for product performance. Moreover, the results of a post-hoc analysis show that using the two control styles simultaneously under uncertainty delivers no discernible benefits, suggesting a decision-related control dilemma. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Turnover of IT professionals has been at the center of IT workforce research, mainly focusing on individual level drivers and consequences. This paper explores how turnover events affect the dynamics of agile software development (ISD) teams. We conducted 25 semi-structured interviews in seven cases to understand team-level consequences of turnover events. We found that ISD teams who directly or indirectly experienced turnover events are confronted with the following four consequences on the group level: (1) group dynamics shift, leading to (2) interpersonal voids, and (3) voids of expertise which consequently leads to (4) rebalancing resources. Through our work, we contribute to a better understanding of how coping processes that start after collective turnover occurs in agile ISD teams are shaped at the group level. Collapse
