Data governance and digital innovation: A translational account of practitioner issues for IS research

Abstract: There is widespread agreement in research and practice that data governance is an instrumental element to help organizations leverage and protect data. IS research has observed that our practical and our scientific knowledge of data governance remains limited, and the increasing ability for organizations to generate, acquire, store, transform, process and analyze data calls for us to further identify and address issues on the topic. Striving to contribute to answer this pressing need, we argue that understanding the nature and the implications of governance mechanisms is of high importance as it is these mechanisms that effectively instantiate data governance in an or­ ganization. Building on our experience preparing and teaching workshops to 102 executives on the topic, we adopt a position of engaged scholarship and provide a translational account of our pedagogical experience on data governance, highlighting four outstanding themes for IS research. We argue that these four themes—(1) embracing data governance without compromising digital innovation; (2) enacting data governance through repertoires of mechanisms; (3) moving away from data governance toward governing data; and (4) moving away from a view of data at rest to adopt a service-based perspective on data governance—are highly relevant for practice and research. In our view, studying these themes will contribute to inform practitioners who often struggle with the implementation of comprehensive data governance programs and frameworks. At the same time, the ability to leverage theory to study these themes can help research generate novel theoretical contributions on data governance, helping future research on the topic. Collapse

Abstract: This paper studies the impact of a chief digital officer (CDO) on corporate environmental performance. Drawing on the upper echelons theory and the attention-based view, we examine whether and under what environmental contingencies the presence of a CDO affects a firm's environmental performance.To test our theory, we use a dataset of 514 publicly-traded U.S. firms and analyze their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from 2005 to 2021. Our results show that the presence of a CDO is negatively associated with GHG emissions and that environmental complexity moderates this relationship. Thereby, we extend the understanding of the outcomes of new functional top management team members and contribute by bringing the industry environmental level into the analysis. In addition, the results encourage managers to consider corporate environmental performance outcomes and environmental contingencies when deciding whether to implement a CDO role. Collapse

Abstract: Low-code development platforms (LCDPs) offer organizations the potential to reassign time-intensive software development tasks from professional to citizen developers, freeing up resources for professionals while empowering domain experts. However, while software can be rapidly built through citizen development (CDD), organizations must look beyond implementation and consider whether software built by individuals with limited technical backgrounds is scalable and durable. In this study, we investigate the scalability of CDD in organizations by conducting a multivocal literature review, integrating both the current phenomenon (CDD) as well as related, established research streams like end-user development. We identify four dimensions affecting CDD scalability and four temporal stages of CDD maturity, and present these as a CDD scaling framework. Moreover, we identify three overarching themes in scaling CDD. Finally, we present an integrated research agenda based on the CDD scaling framework and overarching themes. Collapse

Abstract: When organizations implement information technology (IT) artifacts, they focus on intended functionalities. Misalignment between processes and organizational or individual goals can lead to unintended work practices. Users may actualize affordances that the artifact designer did not intend. As such, there is a potential tension between the goals users must achieve, the technology's features and the organization's policies. Organizations must respond to unintended affordances in regulated industries such as healthcare to ensure compliance. Understanding how organizations react to unintended affordances provides insights into individual and organizational behavior concerning the adoption and assimilation of IT artifacts. Organizations need guidance on responding to unintended affordances in specific situations. Abstract: High drop-out rates among students endanger the goal of improving the quality of higher education. In the student lifecycle, the "transition-in" phase is particularly critical, as most premature drop-outs happen in this phase. Thus, universities and society need to find solutions to help students manage the challenges of the "transition-in" phase. We examine whether a mobile learning app designed and developed for the particular needs of business and economics students can support these students in this crucial phase. Using two well-established models -the "five senses of student success" and "student approaches to learning", we document that the mobile solution proposed here is well suited to support success factors that are essential for the "transition-in" phase. Hence, we could show that app usage can positively affect students' sense of capability, resourcefulness, and the strategic approach while mitigating the surface approach. Collapse

Abstract: The problem of managing timely and effective care within emergency departments (ED) and preventive care in hospital facilities are often associated with patients' overall satisfaction. Hence, the objective of this study is to determine the relationship between independent variables such as average ED wait time, percentage of left without being seen (LWBS), ED stay time, hospital overall rating, percentage of sepsis care, and percentage of patients' response to hospital recommendation as a dependent variable. Given the objective, the study performed a linear regression analysis. The results of the study determined that patients' willingness to recommend a hospital was significantly related to the average time a patient spent in ED (p < 0.01), sepsis care (p < 0.026), left without being seen percentage in ED (p < 0.001), and hospital overall rating (p < 0.001). Our findings suggest that variables related to ED throughput, and preventive care have a significant relationship with patient's willingness to recommend / not recommend the hospital. Collapse

Abstract: Cutting-edge Conversational Artificial Intelligence (CAI) technologies bring ease to human life and the invention of social Artificial Intelligence (AI) bots is one of the ultimate devices in the social media sphere. However, malicious social AI bots lead to societal challenges such as data breaches, information loss, and the proliferation of misinformation. Thus, in this work, significant research has been conducted to address the problem of detecting malicious social AI bots on a microblogging platform such as Twitter. We perform classification through Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformer (BERT) embedding-based approach. Abstract: Information systems research emphasizes that blockchain requires trust in the technology itself. However, we lack knowledge on the applicability of established trust cues to blockchain technology. Thus, this paper’s objective is to empirically evaluate the effectiveness of several established IS trust formation factors on end user trust. We do so by conducting a between-groups experiment. While we can validate the applicability of previous IS trust research for blockchain technology to some extent, we find that trust signals emphasizing the technol­ ogy’s underlying trust-building characteristics are most effective. Hence, we highlight the need for contextual­ ization of trust research on blockchain technology. We provide both researchers and practitioners with insights for building trustworthy blockchain applications that enable trust-less interactions not only in theory but in practice. Collapse

Abstract: The flood of non-constructive and fake online consumer reviews erects a considerable barrier to consumers making efficient decisions. Various review filtering algorithms have been developed to address this challenge, but the design of post-development review portals continues to lack a consensus. In review portals, disclosing more transparent reviews is efficient for enhancing users' trust. However, it will cause users' diminished focus on recommended reviews, leading to sub-optimal decisions. A research model is then developed to investigate users' cognitive processes in their responses to three review exhibition designs (i.e., informed silent display design, filtered review display design, and composite display design) regarding trust in the review portal and perceived decision quality. We also suggest that explanations for review filtering play a moderating role in users' perceptions, which appears to be a viable resolution to this dilemma. This paper provides significant theoretical and practical insights for the review portal design and implementation. Collapse
