Abstract: Transparency-the observability of activities, behaviors, and performance-is often treated as a panacea for modern management. Yet there is a conundrum in the literature, with some studies suggesting that transparency may benefit group creativity and others suggesting that privacy may do so. A similar conundrum exists regarding the effects of different social capital types-structural holes vs. network cohesion-on group creativity. Enterprise social media (ESM) provide a unique opportunity to solve these conundrums by allowing groups to be "transparent" (non-group members can observe and/or participate in group activities) or "private" (group members and activities are hidden from the community) and enabling groups to develop distinct social capital structures. Using data from 28,083 written interactions produced by 109 transparent and 106 private groups in an ESM of a multinational design firm, we found strong support for our contingency hypotheses that both transparent and private groups may produce high levels of creative dialogues, yet in different forms. Specifically, expansion-focused creative dialoguesthose focused on combining or expanding existing concepts-emerge in transparent groups, but only when the group's social capital is characterized by structural holes. Conversely, we found that reframingfocused dialogues-those focused on challenging and rethinking-emerge in private groups but only when the group's social capital is characterized by network cohesion. Theoretically, these findings can help to solve the conundrums in the literature on group creativity and shed light on the role of ESM use in this context. Practically, our findings offer a critical reflection o contemporary initiatives for increasing transparency, whether through physical design or digital transformation.Burcu Bulgurcu is an assistant professor of information systems in the Department of Information Technology Management of the Ted Rogers School of Management. She was formerly a professor at the Carroll School of Management, Boston College. Her research focuses on the behavioral and managerial aspects of cybersecurity and information privacy, security and privacy by design, and the implications of privacy on creativity and innovation in digital enterprises. The results of her research have been published in the Financial Times Top 50 journals and leading conferences, including MIS Quarterly, the Journal of Management Information Systems, and ICIS and AMCIS proceedings. Dr. Bulgurcu's research has been supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and she has received numerous academic honors and awards. She is currently teaching award-winning courses on strategic IT management and data visualization.Yuyang Liang is a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Information Technology at HEC Montréal. He received his PhD in media and information studies in the Department of Media and Information at Michigan State University. His areas of interest include knowledge sharing and collaboration via online communities and social media, enterprise social media, and computational modeling of social systems. Abstract: Capability-based management is an approach for strategy formulation and implementation that is rooted within the enterprise architecture discipline and founded on managerial theories. The main instrument of capability-based management is the capability map, which provides a structured and hierarchical overview of an organization’s capabilities. At a sufficiently high level of abstraction, organizations within the same industry or societal sector are managed based on capabilities that can be described using a generic capability map. While industry/sector-specific capability maps are used in consultancy practice, knowledge of how to develop such generic capability maps is lacking in the academic literature. Therefore, the paper addresses the question of how a generic capability map for organizations within the same industry/sector can be developed. Professional sport clubs were used as the application field for the design science research. The research was executed in collaboration with three major, premier league Belgian clubs that operate in the highest tier of their respective professional sport competition. After different iterations of joint development and evaluation activities with these clubs, the final design of a generic capability map was successfully obtained. Through reflection and learning from this process, the paper formulates the procedural knowledge that was gained in the study as prescriptions that can be used as general steps of a method for creating other industry/sector-specific capability maps. This outline of a method for developing generic capability maps is an original contribution to the enterprise architecture discipline. Collapse

Abstract: Political and news subreddits are individualistic as it pertains to the incivility we might expect them to exhibit; some have clear in-group members, and all have varying degrees of content moderation policies. We sample submissions (n = 127,870) and comments (n = 2,576,049) from 20 of the most popular news and politics subreddits from June 4th, 2021, to June 4th, 2022. All subreddits appear to be mostly civil, with incivility most commonly occurring in comments. When incivility occurs, it tends to take on less-severe forms including insults, profanity, and general toxicity. Subreddits with with clear political in-groups did exhibit more insults, toxicity, profanity, and identitybased attacks. The more complex a subreddit's moderation policies, the less incivility was observed. Finally, uncivil submissions do result in a mild increase in engagement, but given the overall low prevalence of incivility observed, it appears not to be integral to a subreddit's overall engagement. Abstract: Social media groups help foster discussions, but it can be challenging for brands to maintain user engagement and collaborate in value co-creation. Despite a pressing need to comprehend the dynamics of virtual communities, there is a lack of a concerted view of how users engage with brands in virtual communities. To explore this, we use a sportbased virtual community as context since fan engagement levels are substantially higher in sports communities than in other virtual communities. Leveraging the sense of community theory and netnography as a method, we study community formation in a Facebook group comprising fans of a European football club. Preliminary findings reveal a strong presence of membership, influence, and shared emotional connection, while integration and fulfillment of needs are relatively less dominant. As next steps, we plan to examine how a sense of community evolves in virtual communities through a longitudinal approach. Potential implications are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Advancements in human/AI interactions led to smartification of public services via the use of chatbots. Here, we present findings from a clinical inquiry research project in a key public service organisation in Norway. In this project, researchers and practitioners worked together to generate insights on the action possibilities offered to human service agents by chatbots and the potential for creating hybrid human/AI service teams. The project sensitised service agents to discover affordances based on their actual practices, rather than on the predefined use of chatbots. The different affordances identified can be useful for practitioners who design and deploy chatbot-based services. The action possibilities afforded by chatbots provide new ways for service agents and chatbots to work as a team addressing citizens’ needs. Drawing from the whole research process, we offer three lessons learned from the Norwegian Government on human/AI partnerships, theory-based interventions, and institutionalised collaborative research that can be useful for researchers that want to engage with practice and organisations that want to evolve their technology use, stimulate innovation, and engage with research. Abstract: Extant literature has increased our understanding of the multifaceted nature of the digital divide, showing that it entails more than access to information and communication resources. Research indicates that digital inequality mirrors to a significant extent offline inequality related to socioeconomic resources. Bridging digital divides is critical for sustainable digitalized societies. Ιn this paper, we present a literature review of Information Systems research on the digital divide within settings with advanced technological infrastructures and economies over the last decade (2010–2020). The review results are organized in a concept matrix mapping contributing factors and measures for crossing the divides. Building on the results, we elaborate a research agenda that proposes [1] extending established models of digital inequalities with new variables and use of theory, [2] critically examining the effects of digital divide interventions, and [3] better linking digital divide research with research on sustainability.
