Abstract: Options thinking is a powerful approach for managing uncertainty and change in digital environments. It is recognised as a structured process for identifying, developing, and realising options into novel products and services. At Volvo Cars, we have learned it can also become a powerful instrument for innovation renewal, although it can be difficult to apply because it challenges existing firm practices. We elaborate this tension by presenting digital options strategizing as a process of applying options thinking to negotiate capability gaps and configure innovation resources. Our clinical study reveals that this facilitates innovation renewal through emergent processes, practice-oriented design, and opportunity-driven management. Collapse

Abstract: In this paper, we analyze the impact of various factors on meeting service level agreements (SLAs) for information technology (IT) incident resolution. Using a large IT services incident dataset, we develop and compare multiple models to predict the value of a target Boolean variable indicating whether an incident met its SLA. Logistic regression and neural network models are found to have the best performance in terms of misclassification rates and average squared error. From the best-performing models, we identify a set of key variables that influence the achievement of SLAs. Based on model insights, we provide a thorough discussion of IT process management implications. We suggest several strategies that can be adopted by incident management teams to improve the quality and effectiveness of incident management processes, and recommend avenues for future research. Abstract: We posit a novel mechanism—socially endogenous calibration—whereby the tendency to align with others’ perceptions of organizational status varies systematically with the status of a perceiver’s own organization. We specifically theorize that members of higher-status organizations perceive larger and more correlated status differences among other organizations than members of lower-status organizations do. Using a simulation, we demonstrate how socially endogenous calibration yields these predictions even when quality is uniform across organizations. We further present empirical support for our arguments by analyzing data on individual-level prestige ratings of U.S. law firms. Integrating socially endogenous calibration with prevailing status perspectives based on quality uncertainty, we conclude by elaborating a novel research agenda on stability and instability in organizational status hierarchies. Abstract: Digital technologies are reshaping both organizations and our lives as members of society. The resulting changes are often referred to as "digital transformation" (DT)-a concept that has proven difficult to define and explain theoretically. This is especially true because the nature and scope of DT is evolving beyond clearly defined organizational boundaries. Today, information technology (IT) is becoming increasingly accessible and relevant for many more members of society, creating the potential for previously unseen transformations beyond organizations. Accordingly, new theoretical lenses are needed to explain how a broader set of social actors instigate and are affected by transformative change induced by IT. We conceptualize DT as collective social action, a novel lens that aims to expand the focus of DT research beyond organizations as its unit of analysis, with a complementary perspective centered on social actors, their actions, and their impact. We delineate a typology of digital transformation as collective social action that considers the locus of transformation (what?), types of social actor(s) (who?), and the underlying mechanisms (how?). Collectively, the four ideal types constitute a new theory to help apprehend, explain, and predict how DT as collective social action occurs within and outside formally defined organizational boundaries. Abstract: Gamification is considered a promising approach to motivating learners. Yet, existing research found an inconsistent motivating impact of gamification designs. This paper explores individual differences in gamification design in the college learning context. Drawing upon the extended achievement goal theory, we posit that individuals' academic and social achievement goal orientations can portray user types for gamification designs in a learning environment. Using data collected from college students, we validate an instrument to measure college learners' achievement goal orientations. We subsequently identify three clusters of learners: the Self-image Worriers, the Minimizers, and the Eager Learners. We name this learner taxonomy ASGOL (Academic and Social Goal Orientation Learners). We speculate about gamification design implications for supporting all ASGOL types. Collapse

Abstract: Robotic process automation (RPA) is often used in organisational digitalisation efforts to automate work processes. RPA, and the software robots at its heart, is an equivocal and contentious technology. Adopting the products of theorising approach, this study views metaphors as central sensemaking and sensegiving devices that shape the interpretation of RPA among stakeholders towards a preferred reality of ways of seeing and experiencing software robots. The empirical materials are drawn from research in three Australasian organisations that have implemented RPA. Grounding our analysis in the domains-interaction model, we identified three root metaphors: person, robot and tool, their constitutive conceptual metaphors, and intended use as heuristics devices. Our findings show that metaphor is a powerful device that employees rely on to make sense of their experiences with a new digital technology that can potentially shape their roles, work practices and job design. In addition, managers and automation team members intentionally leverage metaphors to shape others’ perceptions of a software robot’s capabilities and limitations, its implication for human work and its expanding benefits for organisations over time, among others. Metaphor as a precursor to more formal theory provides scholars with a vocabulary to understand disparate experiences with an emergent automation technology that can be further developed to generate a theory of seeing automation and working with automated agents. Abstract: Products are often co-developed in networks that embed multiple organizations. Paradoxically, such product development networks can tie rival and competing firms that cooperate with each other in an open-source way. The management of such modus operandi, where firms give up some intellectual property rights granted by law and work with competitors in an open-source way, can be very challenging as it can lead to commoditization, free-riding, and unintended spillover effects. Building upon extant knowledge in coopetition, open-source software, product development, and innovation, we conducted an exploratory case study aimed at understanding open-coopetition (i.e., cooperation among competitors in an open-source way) in the automotive industry. To do so, we leveraged publicly available naturally occurring digital data and qualitative interviews pertaining to four coopetitive open-source projects. Out preliminary results highlight the increasing complexity of the software that powers modern cars and consequent convergence of the automotive industry with the software industry. Collapse

Abstract: Despite the well-known governance problems in public (state-owned) organizations, such as process rigidity, limited autonomy, and weak incentives, public organizations exhibit substantial performance heterogeneity, with some performing similarly to their private counterparts. In this paper, we scrutinize those sources of heterogeneous performance based on the interplay of management practices and resources. We argue that the governance constraints in public organizations inhibit the adoption of performance-enhancing practices. However, this negative effect is attenuated by the presence of distinct resources, such as human capital. We examine these effects in the context of over 9,000 public and private schools in Brazil. We find that private schools are more likely to use internal operational practices, such as planning and human resource management, as well as practices of engaging with external stakeholders. Differential adoption of these practices partially explains why private schools outperform their public counterparts in terms of student learning. Yet, access to highly educated teachers in public schools attenuates the negative association between public governance and the adoption of superior practices. In other words, schools with skilled teachers are more likely to adopt superior practices, thus reducing their performance gap compared with private schools. This result suggests that heterogeneous resource endowments—in our context, human capital—can soften governance constraints that inhibit performance-enhancing practices in public organizations. We thus show that heterogeneous practices and resources jointly explain not only performance differences across public and private organizations but also variations in the performance of organizations with the same governance form.
