Abstract: Twitter is a commonly used social platform for communication during disasters. Tweets by citizens during disasters to share information, seek, and offer help create a body of spontaneous, decentralized, emergent social media communication. Users' exploit Twitter's reach-enabling technological functionalities (hashtags (#), mentions (@), and 'reply-to') to draw attention to the messages. Set in context of the second wave of COVID-19 in India, that saw a surge in citizen-driven tweets seeking healthcare resources from fellow citizens and officials (i.e., SOS tweets), our paper empirically analyses the effects of Twitter's reach-enabling functionalities on online responses (i.e., retweets and replies) to these SOS tweets. We investigate the effects of inclusion of hashtags, mentions, and 'reply to' SOS tweets. We also examine the moderating effect of how the effects of the reach-enabling functionalities change as the social platform gets crowded with SOS tweets. Abstract: Prior research has suggested that corrective fact-checking has inconsistent effects on beliefs about online misinformation claims. This study attempts to explain this inconsistency using three contingent factorsclaim-source credibility, fact-checker credibility, and attitude strength-which respectively relate to three key parties in the fact-checking process: the source of a misleading claim, the fact-checker, and the user evaluating the fact-check. I hypothesize the interplay between these factors, which is tested using two online experiments on COVID-19-related misinformation with over 900 participants. Multilevel analysis of pretest-posttest, repeated measures data supports the hypothesized moderating effects and offers additional insights about how these effects vary between earlier versus later phases of misinformation cycles. The paper concludes with a discussion of contributions to research and practice. Collapse

Abstract: Participatory Budgeting (PB) is often utilized to initiate citizen involvement in governmental processes and familiarize them with public spending. It can help to increase transparency, communication between citizens and government and improve quality of life of the communities. Other times, it can increase costs with little returns. Overall, we have limited knowledge about PB development trajectories, practices, state of art, and future research possibilities. Hence, we have conducted a systematic, longitudinal, thematic literature review, that has examined 92 case studies of PB, and reveals that interest in PB research has been reflective of global movements e.g., the Arab Spring, Occupy Wall Street, and the like. The field, however, is also growing in maturity and needs specialized research on PB tools, sustainability, inclusion, amongst other topics. Collapse

Abstract: While robots appear to be more and more human-like in form and function, they are still machines. People can hence perceive them as humans or machines. With varying human-like designs and user perceptions, there is much confusion about how to measure trust in human-robot relationships. While some researchers use human-like trusting beliefs to conceptualize trust, others use machine-like trusting beliefs to do the same. In this paper, we present a conceptual model and related research propositions to help researchers determine the correct conceptualization of trust for human-robot interaction. We propose that anthropomorphism, or perceptions of humanness about the robot, can dictate the conceptualization of trust in human-robot relationships. Collapse

Abstract: Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) provide rapid exploration capabilities in search and rescue missions while accepting more risks than human operations. One limitation in that current UAVs are heavily manpower intensive and such manpower demands limit abilities to expand UAV use. In operation, manpower demands in UAVs range from determining tasks, selecting waypoints, manually controlling platforms and sensors, and tasks in between. Often, even a high level of autonomy is possible with human generated objectives and then autonomous resource allocation, routing, and planning. However, manually generating tasks and scenarios is still manpower intensive. To reduce manpower demands and move towards more autonomous operations, the authors develop an adaptive planning system that takes high level goals from a human operator and translates them into situationally relevant tasking. For expository simulation, the authors further describe constructing a scenario around the 2018 Hawaii Puna lava natural disaster. Collapse

Abstract: With the proliferation of data has arisen an array of information visualization tools to help humans convert data to information for better decision-making. This ever-expanding visualization toolset has outrun the development of theories of data visualization usage for decision support. In the current research, we contribute to the development of visualization theories in two ways. First, we incorporate our understanding of evolutionary adaptations into the cognitive fit theory to explain why 3-D surface graphs often outperform traditional 2-D graphs in various sensemaking tasks. Drawing on geon theory to interpret the 3-D advantage, we develop the concept of geonic/non-geonic information representations and tasks. We tested and found support for our hy­ potheses that geonic representations have a speed advantage for the tasks we studied, derived from the human evolved capacity for geographic orienteering, but accuracy depends on the match of representation and task, as geonic or non-geonic. Our experiment compared the geonic representation (3-D surface graph) to non-geonic planar representations (cluster bar, heat map, and line) in geonic (integration, proportion) and non-geonic atomic (acquisition, comparison) tasks. For our second contribution, we build on this result to expand the cognitive fit model to incorporate classic human information processes and evolutionary adaptations. We suggest that the cognitive fit model can expand to include new advances in neuroscience. We discuss the theoretical and practical implications of our experiment and our expanded model. Collapse

Abstract: Inspired by the success of agile practices in small teams, organizations seek to achieve agility at scale, leading to large-scale agile transformations. Several frameworks have been developed to guide organizations through this process. While multiple challenges for adopting scaled agile frameworks have already been identified, research on the interplay between traditional management approaches and scaled agile frameworks is scarce. We conduct an in-depth exploratory case study with a German financial services provider to identify tensions that arise when applying a scaled agile framework in a non-agile environment. As a result, we derive 13 tensions along with three areas: goal-setting, planning, and reporting. Thereby, we advance the understanding of tensions within large-scale agile transformations and provide a foundation for future research on scaled agile practices in traditional organizations. Abstract: The widespread and growing use of algorithm-enabled technologies across many aspects of public and private life is increasingly sparking concerns about the lack of transparency regarding the inner workings of algorithms. This has led to calls for (more) algorithmic transparency (AT), which refers to the disclosure of information about algorithms to enable understanding, critical review, and adjustment. To set the stage for future research on AT, our study draws on previous work to provide a more nuanced conceptualization of AT, including the explicit distinction between AT as action and AT as perception. On this conceptual basis, we set forth to conduct a comprehensive and systematic review of the literature on AT antecedents and consequences. Subsequently, we develop an integrative framework to organize the existing literature and guide future work. Our framework consists of seven central relationships: (1) AT as action versus AT as perception; factors (2) triggering and (3) shaping AT as action; (4) factors shaping AT as perception; as well as AT as perception leading to (5) rational-cognitive and (6) affective-emotional responses, and to (7) (un-)intended behavioral effects. Building on the review insights, we identify and discuss notable research gaps and inconsistencies, along with resulting opportunities for future research. review of the literature on AT. Not only has such an endeavor, to our knowledge, not yet been undertaken; but more importantly, we expect that such a review will reveal critical research gaps and inconsistencies and inform future research in the area. In doing so, our study offers a more nuanced conceptualization of AT, including the explicit distinction between AT as action and AT as perception, and delineates AT from related concepts. Moreover, following established guidelines (e.g., vom Brocke et al., 2015;Okoli & Schabram, 2010;Paré et al., 2015;Webster & Watson, 2002) and drawing on a review sample of 50 studies (published between 2002 and 2021), our study offers a comprehensive review and synthesis of prior research on the antecedents and consequences of AT.
