Abstract: Online platforms facilitate the formation of micro-communities on the Internet by enabling exchange between locally dispersed individuals. Since all interactions are mediated through the online platform, user representation plays a critical role for such communities. Grounded in Social Exchange Theory, we report results of a behavioral experiment on the role of user profile photos and avatars for the emergence of network structures over time. While overall network value increases slightly, the underlying structures of exchange shift systematically from many weak ties to fewer but significantly stronger reciprocal exchange relations. Interestingly, despite representing users in a highly abstracted way, avatars yield outcomes comparable to those when using actual photographs. We discuss theoretical and practical implications of how online platforms can leverage social cues such as profile photos and avatars to manage and support micro-communities. Collapse

Abstract: Virtual Reality (VR) has been increasingly adopted in residential aged care facilities (RACFs) for enriching residents' experience. Previous research has indicated that VR experiences can be especially valuable when they are personalizedthat is, tailored to individual interests and circumstances. However, resources guiding how personalized VR experiences should be introduced in RACFs are limited. This paper reports an in-depth case study with a care assistant working across RACFs, who has significant experience in introducing personalized VR for people with dementia. The paper provides insights into vital steps in introducing personalized VR, using available information sources and the opportunities and challenges brought about by this approach for this population. Findings reveal that personalized VR should be introduced with respect and care. However, this could create tension for staff facilitating VR activities in resource-stretched aged care organizations. This paper identifies opportunities for designing systems to make personalized VR more effective in RACFs. Collapse

Abstract: The business value of investments in information technology/information system (IT/IS) has been the subject of active research over several decades. Even though a plethora of similar studies analyzing the impact of promised IT/IS investments on firm performance exists, the results, largely inconclusive, mostly concentrate on the developed countries. In this backdrop, and with an expected manifold rise in IT/IS investments in India in the coming years, an assessment of the relationship between investments and firm performance can be noteworthy. The study explores this important issue by analyzing the impact of IT/IS investments on the firm's performance in India based on data of around 6500 IT/IS investments during 2000-2016. We deploy a series of univariate and multivariate analyses and complement those with several robustness tests. Our principal findings indicate that IT/IS investments on the average in India have been mostly unsuccessful in impacting firm performance positively, in line with "productivity paradox" phenomenon previously documented in the U.S. and other markets. We substantiate our principal results using several robustness tests. We offer several possible explanations of our results spanning across both IS as well as finance literature and discuss the implications of future investment prospects for firms. The results highlight the need for adoption of caution by firms operating in emerging economies like India while considering future IT/IS investment decisions. These suggestions are likely to serve as a good reference point in other emerging economies as well. Collapse

Abstract: In this research essay, we have argued why philosophy makes sense to IS researchers in general and Ph.D. students in particular. We highlighted some basic concepts of philosophical ideas, the philosophy of science, and the philosophy of technology. After that, we discussed how philosophy could also be a rational sense-making or creative sense-making device in the IS theorizing process. While this essay is a kind of capsule for broad philosophical ideas, it does not replace any philosophy course or textbook. Every philosophical idea can quickly fill multiple volumes of a book. Abstract: While an abundant literature describes what, when and why organizational inertia impedes Information Systems-enabled Organizational Transformations (ISOT), the question of where inertia lies and how it is reproduced received scant attention. These questions are all the more important as emerging digital technologies such as AI, data analytics or blockchain fuel new waves of transformations and tie organizations' transformation dynamics to external platforms, algorithms, gig workers or partners. This paper introduces two new concepts, namely the location of inertia and types of inertial mechanisms, as the foundation for a spatial approach to inertia. This approach aims to better locate inertia and what underlying mechanisms reproduce it. Abstract: Along with the ever-increasing portfolio of products online, the incentive for market participants to write fake reviews to gain a competitive edge has increased as well. This article demonstrates the effectiveness of using different combinations of spam detection features to detect fake reviews other than the review-based features typically used. Using a spectrum of feature sets offers greater accuracy in identifying fake reviews than using review-based features only, and using a machine learning algorithm for classification and different amounts of feature sets further elucidates the difference in performance. Results compared by benchmarking show that applying a technique prioritizing feature importance benefits from prioritizing features from multiple feature sets and that creating feature sets based on reviews, reviewers and product data can achieve the greatest accuracy. Abstract: The issue of fake reviews, a perennial challenge faced by e-commerce companies, has been worsened in recent years. In this paper, we investigate the trade-off between the application of general-purpose and domain-specific model by selecting training data using transformer-based models to identify fake reviews. Therefore, we compare two scenarios using different set ups of data selection. First, a general-purpose model was identified and applied on specific domains. Afterwards, domain-specific models were trained and tested. Then, the results from these scenarios were compared, yielding the conclusion that models trained on data from a similar product category outperform general-purpose models in classification performance up to 21% (on average by 4%). Our findings send an important message to e-commerce companies to rethink their strategy on training general-purpose models to identify fake reviews to create several, more domainspecific models on that task according to present data domains.
