Abstract: In this paper, we empirically investigate the emergence of an industrial data ecosystem in the heavy-asset oil and gas industry in Norway, as a business-to-business data platform gets introduced. Conceptually, we build on ecosystem complementaritiesphysical assets, digital technologies, data -which yield larger value when combined, rather than when used separately by actors. Our specific focus lies in exploring the role of complementarities in the emergence of data ecosystems. Our findings offer two contributions. First, we show how industrial data ecosystems emerge as actor and data complementarities restructure existing actor relations. Second, we conceptualize data hierarchies, as specific types of data complementarities, which correspond to the hierarchical ordering of physical assets in the oil and gas heavy-asset industry. Abstract: Multi-sided platform-based ecosystems have emerged as an important organizational arrangement and business model that sees the transformation of pipeline economies into network economies. How managers in these ecosystems approach scaling—as a means to grow their firms—is qualitatively different from what is prevalent in pipeline economies. This paper investigates how two platform companies in B2B markets scale their platform offering to users. We find that the type of platform, whether it is an innovation platform or transaction platform, involves different network effects. We show that innovation platforms need direct orchestration due to a lack of network effects, whereas transaction platforms follow a market logic which makes it easier to create network effects without direct interference by management. Abstract: Social media has emerged as a powerful medium to organize and mobilize social movements. In particular, the connective action of social media builds associations and allows for the continuity of social movements. Yet there is a lack of research on how connective action emergent from social media messages sustains long-term social movements. Accordingly, in this study, we concentrate on Twitter messages related to Women’s March protests held in 2017, 2018, and 2019. Using an interpretive analysis followed by the topic modeling approach, we analyzed the tweets to identify the different types of messages associated with the movement. These messages were classified using a set of categories and subcategories. Furthermore, we conducted a temporal analysis of the message (sub)categories to understand how distinct messages allow movement continuity beyond a specific protest march. Results suggest that while most of the messages are used to motivate and mobilize individuals, the connective action tactics employed through messages sent before, during, and after the marches allowed Women’s March to become a broader and more persistent movement. We advance theoretical propositions to explain the sustainability of a long-term social movement on social media, exemplified through large-scale connective action that persists over time. In doing so, this study contributes to connective action research by providing message categorization that synthesizes the meaning of message content. The findings could help social movement organizers learn different ways to frame messages that resonate with broader social media users. Moreover, our approach to analyzing a large set of tweets might interest other qualitative researchers. Collapse

Abstract: Information systems (IS) projects represent key building blocks of large-scale digital transformation and innovation initiatives. As a result, IS projects have become increasingly ambitious in terms of both goals and scale, making it even more challenging for managers to exercise control over such projects. While prior research focused primarily on the direct and interactive effects of formal and informal control modes on IS project performance, recent research directs attention to the importance of considering project managers’ control styles (i.e., how managers interact with controlees to enact controls). Corresponding studies also indicate that “either/or” control approaches – as opposed to “both/and” approaches – are no longer viable in today’s complex environment. As such, our study draws on an ambidexterity perspective to theoretically develop and empirically test the direct and interactive effects of control-style ambidexterity on IS project performance. Using matched-pair data from 146 IS projects (from 146 high-tech firms), we find that control-style ambidexterity improves project performance – directly and in combination with both formal and informal control. The study results contribute novel insights regarding the effective control of IS projects in the digital era and help explain mixed findings in prior literature, thereby facilitating continued theory development in the research area. Abstract: Digital twins have been used in manufacturing to describe, predict, and prescribe responses to complex problems. The digital twin is a constellation of technologies that mirror physical objects in the virtual world, including what has happened, is happening and could or should happen in the future for the mirrored object. What is common in previous conceptualizations of digital twins is that there is a physical boundary to the extent that digital twins can mirror real objects (sometimes including the objects’ environments). We propose a blended approach, using McKinsey’s straw man and Parmar et al.’s. (2020) framework, to offer a more rigorously structured process for arriving at a refined conceptualization of digital twins in the educational service environment. Collapse

Abstract: People inflicted with diseases such as STDs experience a tremendous number of varying emotions from the onset of symptoms to being cured/living with it. Leveraging the power of bidirectional encoder representation transformers our study builds a custom-named entity recognition model which identifies uniquely associated emotions at various stages of the disease. Our study uses over 1 million posts derived from online communities regarding STDs. We further provide analytical insights into varying emotions at different stages based on contextual reasonings. Finally, we utilize the resulting insights to produce prescriptive measures for future online recommendation systems on online communities, and for stakeholders hoping to build devices that address problems about stigmatized disorders such as STDs. Abstract: The COVID-19 outbreak has witnessed a significant increase in the development and testing of healthcare chatbots. However, this could raise ethical concerns and pose challenges for responsible research in sensitive healthcare areas such as mental health. Our study focuses on the application of the Social Presence theory to mental-health chatbots. We use quantitative content analysis to determine if users in high-risk mental-health situations require a higher level of social presence from chatbots. Abstract: We have examined the critical extreme weather events of 2021 that resulted in disruptions of normal power system operations, the loss of life, and multibillion dollar losses to the US economy. These impacts occurred due to extreme cold, extreme heat, drought, slower post-landfall dissipation of hurricanes, and more intense large-scale thunderstorm systems. We point to the causes but also argue for the changes in planning and operations required to be prepared for and have responses to these events. Specifically, we focus on recognizing the reality of extreme events and planning for their increasing frequency, intensity, duration, and geographic scope; modifying resource planning and adequacy metrics to incorporate common mode events; enabling the power system to depend on reliable natural gas fuel supplies; redesigning power markets to better compensate resources and flexible demand for reducing the probability of outages; and developing resilient systems. Abstract: Personalized product recommendations are widely used by online retailers to combat choice overload, a phenomenon where excessive product information adversely increases the cognitive workload of the consumer, thereby degrading their decision quality and shopping experience. However, scientific evidence on the benefits of personalized recommendations remains inconsistent, giving rise to the idea that their effects may be muted unless the consumer is actually experiencing choice overload. The ability to test this idea is thus an important goal for marketing researchers, but challenging to achieve using conventional approaches. To overcome this challenge, the present study followed a design science approach while leveraging cognitive neuroscience to develop a real-time neuro-adaptive interface for e-commerce tasks. The function of the neuro-adaptive interface was to induce choice overload and permit comparisons of cognitive load and decision quality associated with personalized recommendations, which were presented according to the following three conditions: (a) not presented (control), (b) perpetually presented, or (c) presented only when a real-time neurophysiological index indicated that cognitive workload was high. Formative testing cycles produced a neuro-adaptive system in which the personalization of recommendations and neuro-adaptivity function as intended. The artifact is now ready for use in summative testing regarding the effects of personalized recommendations on cognitive workload and decision quality. Collapse
