Abstract: This study develops and presents a framework that assesses the impact of information and communication technology (ICT) permeability on work and family outcomes among dual-career couples who live together and work from home (WFH). As these couples depend heavily on ICTs to coordinate work, family responsibilities, and communication with each other, they can face cognitive and emotional limitations. Our model suggests that the level of ICT permeability in WFH situations is positively related to ICT fatigue, which can lead to negative family outcomes. Moreover, we investigate the effect of ICT permeability on positive work outcomes through goal progress. Using a 10-day diary approach with dualcareer couples in live-in partnerships, we provide robust empirical evidence that supports our model. Our findings contribute to the existing literature on WFH, which has been facilitated using advanced ICTs. Collapse

Abstract: Donation-phobia has been spreading across several Korean nonprofit organizations (NPOs) because of donationrelated scandals. This study analyzes whether blockchain-based donation system (BDS) can resolve this problem by enhancing NPOs’ trustworthiness. This study examined the effects of the following three features of BDS: transparency, immutability, and efficiency, along with their subsequent effects on formation of NPOs’ trust­ worthiness. Accordingly, information on NPOs’ activities was offered using a BDS with a two-group post-testonly design. The results demonstrated that information provided on the BDS site enhanced the three features of the BDS, which improved the trustworthiness of the NPO. Collapse

Abstract: Individuals and society continue to suffer as the fake news infodemic continues unabated. Current research has focused largely on the verbal part (plain text) of fake news, the nuances of nonverbal communication (emojis and other semiotic tokens) remain largely understudied. We explore the relationship between fake news and emojis in this work through two studies. The first study found that information with emojis is retweeted 1.28 times more and liked 1.41 times more than information without them. Additionally, our research finds that tweets with emojis are more common in fake news (49%) than true news (33%). We also find that emojis are more popular with fake news compared to true news. In our second study, we conducted an online experiment with true and fake news (N=99) to understand how the functional usage (replace/emphasize) of emoji affects the spread of information. We find that when an emoji replaces a verbal token, it is liked less (p<0.05) or equal to information without a nonverbal token (control condition), and when an emoji emphasizes a phrase, it is liked more or equal to the control condition. These effects are observed only for fake news. Functional usage of emojis did not affect the diffusion of true news in our study (p >0.05). Collapse

Abstract: Fake news has emerged as a significant problem for society. Recent research has shown that shifting attention to accuracy improves the quality of content shared by individuals, thereby helping us mitigate the harmful effects of fake news. However, the parts of a news story that can influence individuals’ ability to discern the true state of information presented to them are understudied. We conducted an online experiment (N=408) to determine how different elements (text and paratext) of a news story influence individuals’ ability to detect the true state of the information presented. The participants were presented with the headline (control), main text, graphs/images, and sharing statistics of true and fake news stories and asked to evaluate the story's accuracy based on each of these elements separately. Our findings indicate that individuals were less accurate when identifying fake news from headlines, text, and graphs/images. When asked to evaluate the story based on sharing statistics, they were able to distinguish fake stories from real news with greater accuracy. Our findings also indicate that heuristics that apply to true news are ineffective for detecting the veracity of fake news. Collapse

Abstract: The complex societal problems that we face today require unprecedented collaboration and evidence-based decisions. These collaboration processes are further propelled by the datafication of virtually all spheres of public life. To benefit from this, the data needs to be made available to allow for data analytics. Thus, data sharing becomes a crucial aspect of cross-sector collaborations that aim to create and capture value from information. Compared to collaborations where data sharing is not the main goal, data sharing partnerships face a number of novel challenges, such as mitigating data risks, complying with data protection legislation, and ensuring responsible data use. Navigating these waters and achieving data sharing can be challenging for both governments and businesses, as well as other actors. How do organizations from different sectors manage to achieve data sharing for addressing societal challenges? To address this research question, we apply a framework of three models of cross sector social partnerships developed in the field of organization studies to structure the analysis of six cases. Our analysis suggests that to a certain extent the partnership model determines the types of drivers and challenges to sharing data in a partnership. Leveraging the drivers and anticipating these challenges can help organizations be more aware of key terms of the collaboration and the mechanisms that can be used to succeed in their partnership goals. Abstract: Adequately addressing the grand challenge of poverty requires addressing resource scarcity. However, efforts to provide resources as a means of poverty alleviation have met with mixed success. We explore what makes resource provision effective as a means of poverty alleviation. We adopt a resourcing perspective, which focuses on the relationship between potential resources and schemas, or shared understandings, that shape how resources are used. Consistent with prior research, we find that schemas shape how resources are used in practice. However, we also find that who can access the resources is as consequential as how they are used. In exploring this issue, we identify a new category of schemas related not to use but to access, which we refer to as access schemas. We define access schemas as shared understandings regarding who can appropriately access potential resources. We find that different social groups have distinct schemas regarding access, and we identify three mechanisms—precedence, complementarity, and scaffolding—that shape the way that access schemas are enacted in resource-scarce settings. Our study contributes to the literature on grand challenges by clarifying the link between resource provision and resource use. We also contribute to the literature on resourcing by uncovering mechanisms that shape schema enactment in the presence of conflicting access schemas held by different social groups. Abstract: Online labour platforms enable the trading of services by connecting buyers who need services with providers willing to deliver those services. One crucial element to a platform's longevity and success lies in creating and fostering a thriving communityotherwise, the platform is more likely to perish. However, we know very little about how such communities can be built. Extant studies have overlooked different stakeholder groups' roles in community building and how primarily online platforms utilize offline activities. In this paper, we study the community-building efforts of six generalist online labour platforms that have succeeded to thrive longer than an average platform. Beyond the traditional stakeholder roles of providing a marketplace (platform), delivering services (providers) and purchasing services (buyers), we find novel unique and shared roles that foster a well-functioning community. We identify four levers of community building: encouraging community participation, involving users, empowering providers, and empowering buyers. Collapse

Abstract: Infinite regress lies within every democratic procedural choice. If society members try to select an appropriate rule [social choice correspondence (SCC)] entirely endogenously, they will need an appropriate rule to choose such a rule. However, this should also be selected by an appropriate rule to choose a rule to choose a rule, and so on. This paper explores how to solve this infinite regress. A preference profile over the set of alternatives is said to converge if, at a sufficiently high level, every feasible SCC in the menu ultimately results in the same alternative, and hence, further regress has no effective meaning. A menu is said to be convergent if all preference profiles converge under the menu (i.e., infinite regress can “always” be resolved). First, we characterize the convergent menus under a special case. Then, we prove two general possibility theorems: (1) there exists a menu of SCCs that is strongly convergent (i.e., the outcome is uniquely determined); (2) any set of scoring rules can be extended to a superset that is asymptotically convergent for a large society (i.e., the probability of a convergent profile occurring goes to one as the population goes to infinity). Therefore, such a large society can “almost always” resolve the infinite regress by adding multiple SCCs. These theorems are expected to build new ground for SCCs in a distinct way from the axiomatic characterizations of standard social choice theory. Collapse
