Abstract: Conversational agents are becoming increasingly intelligent due to artificial intelligence (AI) advances, improving human-machine interaction. As conversational agents are already being used in various realworld applications, research shows the enormous potential of exploring advanced areas such as companionship or learning support. Particularly, those intelligent and future-oriented application areas rely on using AI-based technologies. However, implementations are often prototypical without comprehensive technological information. Moreover, the possibilities for practical implementation of conversational agents are growing, making the choice of architecture and tools for implementation complex. We address this problem by developing a taxonomy that helps characterize AI-based tools and services for intelligent interactions. We then derive archetypes for AI-based tools using cluster analysis and give meta-architectures that exemplify how to integrate AI-based services into typical technical conversational agent architectures. With our research, we aim to expand the knowledge base for developing conversational agents and support developers in their implementation. Collapse

Abstract: Design knowledge has become increasingly important in information systems research in recent years, with Design Science Research (DSR) as an approach to developing innovative and effective artifacts. Design Principles (DPs) have proven to be a popular tool for contributing to abstract design knowledge. The construction and formulation of DPs has become more professional in recent years, with publications providing guidance. However, the implementation by researchers of these rules needs to be investigated. To address this gap, we conducted a systematic literature review, analyzed the various forms of design knowledge that have emerged, and examined the state of design principle construction and formulation. Our analysis shows that in recent years there has been a significant increase in the number of publications dealing with DP design. Our results shed light on the characteristics and evolution of DPs, as well as their construction and formulation, and provide valuable guidance for future research. Collapse

Abstract: The use of digital technologies for extracting information from various data sources can help organisations to reduce uncertainty and improve decision-making. The increasing availability in volume, velocity, and variety of data, however, can give rise to significant risks and challenges in ensuring a high level of information quality (IQ). Pre-digital organisations can be particularly susceptive to such challenges due to their limited experience with digital technologies and IQ governance. We adopt a theory-infused interventionist research approach to assist a pre-digital multinational military organisation in navigating its digital transformation (DT) by focusing on IQ. We design and implement an IQ strategy (IQS) by drawing upon organisational information processing theory and examining how the level of IQ can affect the balance between information processing requirements and capacity. We demonstrate that an IQS that incorporates both technological, as well as IQ governance solutions, can support organisations in setting the scope of their DT, decreasing employees' resistance to change, and increasing their satisfaction, while concurrently improving organisational efficiency. Our work stresses the importance of IQ in the digital era and delineates how pre-digital organisations can navigate DT by strategically addressing IQ. Collapse

Abstract: Work is increasingly being organised via online platforms outside guiding organisational structures. Instead of having colleagues at work, crowd workers connect in online communities. We investigate how crowd workers build professional holding environments in online communities to compensate for the lack of organisational structures and we consider how they craft their crowd work activities to enhance their work experience and reduce its long-term precarity. Following a qualitative research design, this paper uses 675 forum interactions collected across six online communities. Based on our findings, we propose the concept of professional holding environments and provide a model for building such holding environments and job crafting in online communities. We thereby expand previous research on holding environments comprised of family members and friends by revealing the impact of professional online communities and their role in professionalisation and crafting supportive social structures in online crowd work. Abstract: Due to eroding business models, companies are seeking new growth opportunities. Business model innovation (BMI) can enable sustainable competitive advantage and future growth. Yet many companies are struggling to innovate their business models. Recent research reveals that collaboration concerning stakeholder integration and open business model innovation can foster BMI, but research has addressed both topics in isolation. By combining these topics, we establish business model co-innovation (BMCI) as a new perspective. Based on a longitudinal case study of an incumbent retailer and an incumbent electronics supplier, we investigate how both parties contribute to innovating the supplier’s business model. We document a BMCI process model highlighting the direct and indirect business model changes of the retailer and the supplier and we identify BMCI characteristics. Abstract: Machine learning (ML) analyses offer great potential to craft profound advice for augmenting managerial decision-making. Yet, even the most promising ML advice cannot improve decisionmaking if it is not utilized by decision makers. We therefore investigate how ML analyses influ­ ence decision makers’ utilization of advice and resulting decision-making performance. By analyzing data from 239 ML-supported decisions in real-world organizational scenarios, we demonstrate that decision makers’ utilization of ML advice depends on the information quality and transparency of ML advice as well as decision makers’ trust in data scientists’ competence. Furthermore, we find that decision makers’ utilization of ML advice can lead to improved decision-making performance, which is, however, moderated by the decision makers’ manage­ ment level. The study’s results can help organizations leverage ML advice to improve decisionmaking and promote the mutual consideration of technical and social aspects behind ML advice in research and practice as a basic requirement. Abstract: Data Spaces are an emerging concept for the trusted implementation of data-based applications and business models, offering a high degree of flexibility and sovereignty to all stakeholders. As Data Spaces are currently emerging in different domains such as mobility, health or food, semantic interfaces need to be identified and implemented to ensure the technical interoperability of these Data Spaces. This paper consolidates data models from 13 different domains and analyzes the ontological dissonance of these domains. Using a network graph, central data models and ontology attributes are identified, while the semantic heterogeneity of these domains is described qualitatively. Abstract: With the increasing use of AI in marketing, ethical repercussions are beginning to emerge. From privacy issues, through discrimination of marginalized groups, to emergent systemic social distortions, AI is changing the marketing ethical landscape. In this paper we conduct a structured literature review of the emerging ethical issues posed by AI in the domains of marketing and consumer behavior. We identify three clusters of ethical issues (algorithm, society and existential) and map these to the marketing domains of systems, brands, and consumers. We conclude that the field of ethical marketing AI is still very much in its infancy, but such is the rate of development ethical marketing AI is likely to become important field for academics and practitioners alike. Abstract: We consider the problem of how a platform designer, owner, or operator can improve the design and operation of a digital platform by leveraging a computational cognitive model that represents users' folk theories about the platform as a sociotechnical system. We do so in the context of Reddit, a social-media platform whose owners and administrators make extensive use of shadowbanning, a non-transparent content moderation mechanism that filters a user's posts and comments so that they cannot be seen by fellow community members or the public. After demonstrating that the design and operation of Reddit have led to an abundance of spurious first-party suspicions of shadowbanning in cases where the mechanism was not in fact invoked, we develop a computational cognitive model of users' folk theories about the antecedents and consequences of shadowbanning that predicts when users will attribute their on-platform observations to a shadowban. The model is then used to evaluate the capacity of interventions available to a platform designer, owner, and operator to reduce the incidence of these false suspicions. We conclude by considering the implications of this approach for the design and operation of digital platforms at large. Collapse

Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI)-based systems, such as AI companions, have been increasingly used to meet the needs of individuals who experience loneliness. In this current study, we sought to identify the mechanism underlying human-AI interactions in the mental health context. We use a Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) approach to analyze a sample of user-generated content consisting of rich data on AI companion app’s reviews over a two-year period. We extracted five positive topics (i.e., perceived humanness, perceived emotional support, perceived AI’s friendship, perceived (less) loneliness, and mental health benefits) and four negative topics (i.e., perceived lack of conscientiousness, perceived incredibility, perceived violation of privacy, and perceived creepiness of AI) from our analysis. Our AI-based emotional support model suggests that these positive and negative characteristics are interrelated. Our study provides an understanding of the relationship between AI companions and human users in light of research showing the effectiveness of an AI-based intervention for mental health care.
