Abstract: Although most studies on philanthropy have focused on corporate benefactors, limited attention has been given to beneficiaries and their characteristics. The literature thus falls short in explaining how the variance in the perceived value of those characteristics can condition the philanthropic attractiveness of recipients for donors. Drawing from Bourdieu’s concept of symbolic capital and qualitative insights drawn from our empirical context of philanthropy in the field of cultural production in the Russian Federation, we argue that the attractiveness of cultural organizations for potential corporate benefactors depends on a range of determinants, which we classify under the broad umbrellas of respectability and reputability. By using political orientation as a moderator, we show that, although respectability is an indiscriminately attractive part of symbolic capital, reputability, associated with artistic celebrity and renown, can become a deterrent to potential donors when it augments the risk of jeopardizing their relationship with the government. We also demonstrate that a board of trustees, which signals openness to stakeholder involvement, diminishes the returns of reputability for potential donors. We test our hypotheses using original and representative longitudinal data on 449 Russian theaters (2004–2011). Taking an indirect recursive approach to estimate models with high-dimensional fixed effects, we find strong support for our hypotheses across a variety of econometric specifications. Our research offers a unique focus on the beneficiary side of the beneficiary-benefactor relationship, which has both theoretical and practical implications for the literatures on corporate philanthropy, and cultural industries. As these interactions increase, it's crucial to understand digital character design and its societal and business implications. This research aims to investigate the design elements of digital characters and provide prescriptive knowledge for organizations. Using the design science research paradigm, we'll answer the question of how to design digital characters that best represent a company. Abstract: Constantly changing technologies affect not only the value types that companies generate but also their processes and their most important resource: employees. Such transitions referred to as digital transformation, mean that employees must tailor their skills and ways of working to stay considered a long-term asset for their company. Intelligent information systems, such as robotic process automation (RPA), are gradually taking over employees' work efforts, and thus replacing part of the human workforce. In the paper, we investigate whether non-technical employees (in this case, accountants) can be retrained to work as entry-level RPA software developers. In our case study (observations blended with interviews), we show how retraining transforms employees’ identity, addresses their anxiety and skepticism, and impacts the organization. Further, we show the relevance of domain knowledge, digital literacy, and the cornerstones of a training program transforming accountants into RPA developers. Collapse

Abstract: Acknowledging the global relevance of controlling corruption, our study contributes to the existing body of literature by exploring the relationship between E-Government (EGOV) and Corruption Control at the EGOV subindices level. Toward this, we draw upon theoretical insights from Resource-Based View (RBV), Media Lit­ eracy Theory, Agency Theory, Information Quality, and Transaction Cost Theory to derive a set of testable hypotheses. Using a panel dataset comprising 102 countries, we employ a Linear Mixed Effects (LME) estimation method to thoroughly investigate and uncover the relative effectiveness of EGOV subindices in controlling corruption. Abstract: Complexity has always been a topic for IS scholars. While research has addressed this problem in the past, the exponential rise of complexity due to the pervasive use of IS in our society has made complexity an even bigger justification of concern for both scholars and organizations. One of the outcomes of this risen complexity is the number and impact of IS incidents that occur due to organizations failing to prepare for a plethora of possible scenarios that can have negative consequences. We expand on Mehrizi and colleagues' (2022) theoretical framework for learning from IS incidents. Our research presents a Chaos Engineering (CE) Framework that helps organizations in generating knowledge through experimentation, in a capacity to tame complexity. CE is the discipline of experimenting on a system to build confidence and resilience, by simulating different complex behaviors. Abstract: Traditional recommender systems are single objectives, recommending the most relevant items. Unfortunately, this can harm the user experience and limit user interaction. The Calibrated Recommendation System is a multi-objective recommender system that desires to provide relevant and calibrated items simultaneously. The calibration objective seeks to generate a recommendation list that observes the genre proportions of the items in the user's preference. The kernel idea is inserting items that follow these proportions. However, there are other objectives that a recommender system can achieve besides calibration. Thus, this study aims to analyze the effect of the calibration over other objectives such as novelty, coverage, personalization, unexpectedness, and serendipity. We implement four state-of-the-art proposals and compare them against the baseline. Two datasets were used to run the experiment. We discover that calibration implies more items covered, more personalized recommended lists, and more unexpected items, producing serendipity. Collapse

Abstract: In response to the burgeoning threats of climate change to humanity, numerous governments, such as those of the United States and most European countries, have launched rollout programs for the distribution of smart metering technology (SMT). Despite this notable recent investment, questions of whether and why SMT adoption facilitates the reduction of households’ energy demands remain relatively unexplored. Building on cognitive dissonance theory, we propose a research model for SMT adoption, residential energy-saving behaviors, and moderating factors. We then empirically test the model using a rich household dataset from the United Kingdom between 2012 and 2016. Our results show that SMT adoption is positively associated with energy-saving behaviors, while energysaving motivations substantially moderate this association—a lower level of concern about saving energy / a higher level of concern about climate change amplifies this effect. Importantly, we find that SMT usage positively moderates this relationship, but this marginal gain decreases in technology usage intensity. Our findings contribute to the information systems literature by showing a consequence of new technology adoption along with the role of cognitive dissonance in promoting intended objectives and identifying potential moderating effects. Abstract: Organizational innovation communities for new product development (NPD) have become an integral part of organizations’ strategy to find innovative ideas for new products with the help of their consumers. The success of these communities largely depends on users’ idea submission and idea quality. While more ideas will increase the chance of finding novel ideas, more low-quality ideas will increase the costs of finding novel ideas. Although the idea crowdsourcing literature has grown significantly, it is relatively new and focused on idea crowdsourcing platforms for product improvement ideas where individuals submit ideas to fix software bugs or to request new features. By examining idea quality (measured by vote) and idea submission in idea crowdsourcing platforms for NPD, we aim to enrich our understanding of these contexts. Furthermore, we review the literature from two perspectives: individuals’ own experiences (past performance) and the experiences of others (interaction with peers’ ideas) and identify several key gaps in the literature. Using data from a pioneer innovation community for NPD, we find an inverted U-shape association between users’ past performance (in terms of average quality of past ideas) and idea quality and idea submission. Additionally, interaction with peers’ ideas (in terms of quantity and intensity) positively influences idea submission but does not impact idea quality. A complementary rela­ tionship between own experience and others’ experiences was also not found. The findings provide new insights into idea crowdsourcing platforms for NPD and the determinants of individuals’ idea submission behavior and idea quality on these platforms which have several implications for practice.
