Abstract: Many workplaces have replaced annual reviews with ongoing performance evaluations, often through the integration and use of real-time feedback applications. These applications allow users to provide feedback through different device mediums. However, organizational leaders are not primarily concerned with convenience: Feedback structure and quality are paramount to the application's effectiveness, and the distinct technological affordances of mobile and desktop devices may yield different feedback comments. This study uniquely investigates the impact of device medium (desktop vs. mobile) usage on textual feedback according to four helpfulness indicators: comment length, subjectivity, specificity, and valence. Analyzing two years of proprietary data obtained through an enterprise real-time feedback application via regression analysis, we interestingly find that the device medium impacts the four distinct helpfulness indicators differently. Our study underscores the impact of device type on evaluation outcomes and derived managerial insights will help organizational leaders looking to optimize real-time feedback app usage. Collapse

Abstract: Telemedicine has drawn noticeable attention due to the advancement of information technology, and it saw a surge in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study is aimed at understanding telemedicine users’ perceptions on their care services, as well as identifying the aspects of telemedicine that can be improved to enhance users’ experience and satisfaction. Specifically, we utilized a topic modeling approach with Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) to analyze telemedicine-related discussion posts on Reddit to discover the topics and themes that telemedicine service users are interested in, as well as the perceptions that users have of those topics and themes. 11 topics and 6 themes were discovered by the LDA algorithm. Lastly, we provide our suggestions and insights on how telemedicine services and practitioners can implement the themes, as well as directions for future study. Collapse

Abstract: Outcome-based contracts (OBC) in information technology outsourcing have attracted much attention, but literature is relatively scarce on this topic. Though firm theories prefer hierarchy as the most protective form of governance for such transactions, the practice moves forward with many hybrid governance structures under­ pinned by automation and digital transformation technologies. The objective of this paper is to develop a con­ ceptual framework that explains the preference for inter-firm arrangements in OBCs and exhibits the capabilities of these technologies in mitigating contract inefficiencies. The proposed framework narrows the gap in the literature for a concurrent view of the latitudinal (ex-post, ex-ante) and longitudinal (reputation) dimensions of the contract. We represent the OBC as a concurrent stochastic game in a probabilistic model checker. Testing of our propositions revealed that these technology assets are complementary and joint ownership is desirable under reputation effects, reputation transfers take place between the contracting parties in the same direction, and continuous reallocation of ownership is required to maintain joint ownership. Rapid technological advancement and industry maturity can gravitate the transaction towards common ownership. The reputation function using Fermi probability distribution in our model is a novel performance measure for the industry. Collapse

Abstract: How do organizations develop and manage employees’ data analytics skills to create business value and enhance organizational competitive advantage? In order to address this prominent and critical research question for IS research, we conceptualize and operationalize data analytics skills at the individual level and develop a nomological network model to examine its critical antecedents and outcomes from the lens of adaptation structuration theory. We test our core proposition and research model using survey data collected from 258 frontline employees of three data-intensive research institutes in China. We discover that data-driven culture, data analytics affordance, and individual absorptive capacity are positively associated with employees’ data analytics skills, which in turn, have positive influences on their task and innovative performance. We classify the employees into digital immigrants and digital natives based on age and examine the different influences of three salient antecedents on data analytics skills between the two groups. The research findings suggest that data-driven culture plays a more significant role in driving data analytics skills for digital immigrants, while data analytics affordance exhibits a stronger influence on data analytics skills for digital natives. Abstract: The burgeoning growth of mobile social platforms has gained the attention of advertisers, and the way how to stimulate users’ click-through intention in the virtual social community is becoming a research focus of scholars. Drawing on the elaboration likelihood model (ELM), this study develops a theoretical framework to examine the mediation effects of cognitive vs. affective trust on the relationship between dual routes (central route vs. pe­ ripheral route) and users’ click-through intention in the context of mobile social platforms. Particularly, users’ prior product experience is incorporated in the research model to examine its moderating effect on the influence processes. A scenario-based survey is conducted in China, and the partial least square method is used to analyze the data. Empirical results suggest that perceived content personalization is positively associated with cognitive trust, and its influence is stronger for experienced users with the recommended product. Social recommendation is positively associated with affective trust, and its impact is higher for users without prior product experience. Advertiser reputation is positively associated with both cognitive trust and affective trust, and its effect on cognitive trust is stronger for users without prior product experience, while its impact on affective trust is higher for users with prior product experience. Moreover, cognitive trust is positively associated with affective trust, and the two trust mechanisms have positive influences on click-through intention toward the recommended product. We propose a Deep Learning-based Cyber-risk Assessment and Mitigation (DL-CRAM) model for the smart city administrator to address this. The model comprises three modules: cyber-risk assessment (CRA), cyber-risk quantification (CRQ), and cyber-risk mitigation (CRM). The CRA module uses a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) algorithm to assess the probability of misreading two-digit speed limit signs. The CRQ module calculates the expected loss for the smart city due to collisions or congestion on the pathways. The CRM module proposes strategies to reduce cyber-risk using technological means and pass the residual risk to third-party cyber-insurer. Collapse

Abstract: Hackers have used Distributed-Denial-of-Service attacks to overwhelm a firm’s cyber-resources resulting in disrupted access to legitimate end-users. Globally, DDoS attacks cost firms between US$ 120 K to US$ 2 M for each incident. Apart from the monetary loss, they also disrupt service quality and damage the brand reputation of firms. In 2018-2019, Massively Multiplayer Online Gaming (MMOG) firms witnessed 74% of the total DDoS attacks. MMOG firms form a lucrative segment for hackers because of their large customer base and the massive incentive to cause disruptions and losses. Our Feedforward Neural Network-based Cyber-risk Assessment and Mitigation (FNN-CRAM) model consists of three modules: assessment, quantification, and mitigation. The cyber-risk assessment module uses FNN, which takes seven inputs comprising DDoS attack intensity and duration for five DDoS attack types, vulnerability data (i.e., their counts and score), and the vulnerability trends over time. This layer is connected to a ten-neuron hidden layer and one neuron output layer that estimates the probability of these attacks. We also observe that the probability of these DDoS attacks follows a Weibull distribution. Next, our cyber-risk quantification module computes the expected loss. We note that expected losses due to these DDoS attacks follow a gamma distribution. Our cyber-risk mitigation module uses a heat matrix to help the CTO (i) prioritize the cyber-risk associated with a DDoS attack and (ii) decide whether to reduce, accept, or pass the cyber-risk using technological and cyber-insurance interventions. Abstract: The over-the-top (OTT) industry has witnessed remarkable growth in recent years with a sharp increase in the number of subscribers, leading to increased competition among OTT platforms to acquire movie rights. Conse­ quently, the gap between the theatrical and OTT releases has been diminishing over the last few years. An early release of a movie on an OTT platform fetches a higher distribution fee for a movie distributor (MD), however, it reduces the MD’s revenue from the theatrical release. Therefore, it becomes critical for the MD to determine the optimal release time and distribution fee combination. In this paper, we analytically solve the MD’s decision problem and provide a detailed analysis of how the optimal release time varies with changes in platform characteristics such as the proportion of ad revenue and the platform’s risk profile, movie characteristics such as success factor and suitability for OTT, and market characteristics such as broadband penetration, piracy rate and customers’ preferences for viewing channels. We compare our results with the actual release times of 243 movies released during 2015–2022. We find that the optimal release time increases with ad revenue proportion, broadband penetration, and piracy rate, whereas the optimal fee reduces non-linearly with release time and depends on OTT’s risk profile. Our findings also indicate that the optimal release time reduces for movies that do not provide any additional utility for theater goers, and as customers’ preference towards OTT increases. Our work provides much-needed guidelines for professionals dealing with movie releases on OTTs. Collapse

Abstract: Evermann and Rönkkö (2023) review recent developments in partial least squares (PLS) with the aim of providing guidance to researchers. Indeed, the explosion of methodological advances in PLS in the last decade necessitates such overview articles. In so far as the goal is to provide an objective assessment of the technique, such articles are most welcome. Unfortunately, the authors' extraordinary and questionable claims paint a misleading picture of PLS. Our goal in this short commentary is to address selected claims made by Evermann and Rönkkö (2023) using simulations and the latest research. Our objective is to bring a positive perspective to this debate and highlight the recent developments in PLS that make it an increasingly valuable technique in IS and management research in general.
