Abstract: A citizen-centric view is key to channeling technological affordances into the development of future cities in which improvements are made with the quality of citizens’ life in mind. This paper proposes City 5.0 as a new citizen-centric design paradigm for future cities, in which cities can be seen as markets connecting service providers with citizens as consumers. City 5.0 is dedicated to eliminating restrictions that citizens face when utilizing city services. Our design paradigm focuses on smart consumption and extends the technology-centric concept of smart city with a stronger view on citizens’ roadblocks to service usage. Through a series of design workshops, we conceptualized the City 5.0 paradigm and formalized it in a semi-formal model. The applicability of the model is demonstrated using the case of a telemedical service offered by a Spanish public healthcare service provider. The usefulness of the model is validated by qualitative interviews with public organizations involved in the development of technology-based city solutions. Our contribution lies in the advancement of citizen-centric analysis and the development of city solutions for both academic and professional communities. Collapse

Abstract: Remote work is becoming the “new normal”, and more people are working in the home office due to the COVID19 pandemic. Boundary management and the individual preferences to segment work and private life are a current topic of research as digital technologies have the potential to aggravate segmentation due to their invasive effect. In this context, we add to a current research stream on technostress, investigating technologydriven spill-over in a longitudinal study based on data assessed during the pandemic. The use of communica­ tion technologies leads to work-to-family stress due to the occurrence of techno-stressors interruptions, invasion, and overload. Differences between “segmenters” (people with a strong wish for separation) and “integrators” (who rather integrate life domains) were found. They experience techno-stressors differently in dependence on their technology use. Our paper offers interesting theoretical insights into boundary transcending effects of technology use. Recommendations for employers on how to shape the “new normal” are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Algorithms increasingly take on tasks traditionally performed by humans. They not only serve as co-workers to their human counterparts but increasingly take over management tasks by supervising and coordinating human workers -a phenomenon referred to as Algorithmic Management (AM). There is a growing research interest in this topic, but currently, the field lacks an overview and thorough understanding of what types of managerial work algorithms already perform. We address this with a structured literature review. We find that the automation of management work and workers' responses to it (so-called algoactivism) have received the most attention. However, the configuration of AM systems has so far received little systematic attention. We further analyze which management functions algorithms perform. We find that while algorithms primarily supervise and investigate workers, coordinating interdependent workers and tasks has not been addressed. We propose several avenues for future research. Abstract: As healthcare organisations are looking for ways to improve their processes, process mining techniques are increasingly being used. Current process mining methods do not offer support for translating process mining insights into actionable improvement ideas. By performing action research at two healthcare organisations, we introduce and illustrate the INTEL funnel, a novel three-staged method consisting of process familiarisation, domain explanation and improvement ideation. Our method complements existing process mining methods and constitutes the first attempt to open the black box regarding the path from process mining insights to actionable process improvement ideas. In this way, it can contribute to a more systematic uptake of process mining in healthcare practice. Collapse

Abstract: To counteract global warming, individuals must adopt pro-environmental behaviors, but many prefer their established behaviors because of inertia. This paper analyzes how we can address the inertia that hinders pro-environmental behavior using digital nudges. Our structured literature review finds 19 out of 20 studies that show how decision information nudges like feedback overcome behavioral inertia. Most of the habitual patterns we identified could be attributed to private household behaviors like inefficient energy or water consumption. We contribute a framework for how the three dimensions of inertia-behavioral, cognitive, and affective inertia-are best each addressed using informational, structural, and assistance nudges, respectively. Abstract: Energy and water consumption are significant sources of greenhouse gas emissions. While facilitating conservation behaviors in private households can help to mitigate these emissions, the effects of such mitigations are often indirect and delayed. Presenting meaningful feedback about consumption can help to make clear the positive effects of conservation behaviors to those who undertake them. We propose a large-scale field experiment to increase energy and water conservation through algorithmic econudges. We use smart metering data to provide transparency, social references, and information about the environmental effects of conservation behavior. The proposed research is planned in a longitudinal design for 8 weeks in the winter of 2022/23 in Germany. The findings are expected to contribute to scholarly research on nudging and practice as well as to housing providers and policymakers who are interested in green nudging. Collapse

Abstract: Significant investments in information systems (IS) over the past decades have led to increasingly complex IS architectures in organisations, which are difficult to understand, operate, and maintain. We investigate this development and associated challenges through a conceptual model that distinguishes four constituent elements of IS architecture complexity by differentiating technological from organisational aspects and structural from dynamic aspects. Building on this conceptualisation, we hypothesise relations between these four IS architecture complexity constructs and investigate their impact on architectural outcomes (i.e., efficiency, flexibility, transparency, and predictability). Using survey data from 249 IS managers, we test our model through a partial least squares (PLS) approach to structural equation modelling (SEM). We find that organisational complexity drives technological complexity and that structural complexity drives dynamic complexity. We also demonstrate that increasing IS architecture complexity has a significant negative impact on efficiency, flexibility, transparency, and predictability. Finally, we show that enterprise architecture management (EAM) helps to offset these negative effects by acting as a moderator in the relation between organisational and technological IS architecture complexity. Thus, organisations without adequate EAM are likely to face large increases in technological complexity due to increasing organisational complexity, whereas organisations with adequate EAM exhibit no such relation. Abstract: Recent achievements of artificial intelligence (AI) have caused organizations to increasingly bring AI capabilities into their core business processes. Such AI-supported business processes often result in human-AI hybrid systems, which consist of an AI system, which performs most of the execution, and humans, who monitor this execution and occasionally provide additional inputs and overrides. Using sales data from Walmart, we conduct an online study to investigate if human supervision can improve upon state-of-the-art AI forecasts. Furthermore, we analyze the perceptions and behavioral intentions of the human participants over time. We find that human interventions consistently lead to less accurate forecasts and that participants initially underestimate the AI system's accuracy and overestimate their own potential to improve upon AI forecasts. However, perceptions quickly shift over the course of the study, causing the participants to perceive the AI system increasingly favorably, which also leads to behavioral changes and better hybrid system performance. Abstract: Industries are now struggling with high level of security-risk vulnerabilities in their software environment which mainly originate from open-source dependencies. Industries' percentage of open source in codebases is about 54% whereas ones with high security risks is about 30% (Synopsys 2018).While there are existing solutions for application security analysis, these typically only detect a limited subset of possible errors based on pre-defined rules. With the availability of open-source vulnerability resources, it is now possible to use data-driven techniques to discover vulnerabilities. Although there are a few AI-based solutions available, but there are some associated challenges: 1) use of artificial intelligence for application security (AppSec) towards vulnerability detection has been very limited and definitely not industry oriented, 2) the strategy to develop, use and manage such AppSec products in enterprises have not been investigated; therefore cybersecurity firms do not use even limited existing solutions. Abstract: Innovation through outsourcing' describes a firm's strategy to receive innovation by outsourcing IT or IT-intensive processes to more competent and innovative service providers who, in turn, do not only operate those activities but also improve and innovate for or on behalf of their clients. This strategy has gathered some attention from recent research, though it has mainly examined the client perspective, yet. We contribute to this sub-field of outsourcing research by analyzing vendors' strategies to improve their innovation capability and thus to be more innovative for their clients. Based on a longitudinal dataset of 136 outsourcing vendors, we analyze which innovationenabling initiatives are related to superior firm performance (in terms of revenue growth). We find that particularly employee-involving initiatives are promising: outsourcing vendors that have implemented, e.g., idea/innovation platforms that support employee-driven innovation, receive above-average revenue growth.
