Abstract: Biases on online platforms pose a threat to social inclusion. We examine the influence of a novel source of bias in online philanthropic lending, namely that associated with religious differences. We first propose religion distance as a probabilistic measure of differences between pairs of individuals residing in different countries. We then incorporate this measure into a gravity model of trade to explain variation in country-to-country lending volumes. We further propose a set of contextual moderators that characterize individuals’ offline (local) and online social contexts, which we argue combine to determine the influence of religion distance on lending activity. We empirically estimate our gravity model using data from Kiva.org, reflecting all lending actions that took place between 2006 and 2017. We demonstrate the negative and significant effect of religion distance on lending activity, over and above other established factors in the literature. Further, we demonstrate the moderating role of lenders’ offline social context (diversity, social hostilities, and governmental favoritism of religion) on the aforementioned relationship to online lending behavior. Finally, we offer empirical evidence of the parallel role of online contextual factors, namely those related to community features offered by the Kiva platform (lending teams), which appear to amplify the role of religious bias. In particular, we show that religious team membership is a double-edged sword that has both favorable and unfavorable consequences, increasing lending in general but skewing said lending toward religiously similar borrowers. Our findings speak to the important frictions associated with religious differences in individual philanthropy; they point to the role of governmental policy vis-à-vis religious tolerance as a determinant of citizens’ global philanthropic behavior, and they highlight design implications for online platforms with an eye toward managing religious bias. Abstract: With consumers being responsible for a significant portion of carbon emissions, innovative digital technologies such as Carbon Reward (CR) apps can play a pivotal role in promoting low-carbon behaviors. Meanwhile, the potential of these apps has not been fully recognized due to their novelty. This study focuses on the role of gamification affordances and monetary rewards in Carbon reward apps to determine their effectiveness in promoting low-carbon behaviors. This study uses a vignette scenario approach to explore the potential of monetary incentives and gamification to encourage long-term low-carbon behaviors within CR apps. Abstract: While staying fit through sports and fitness (SF) activities come with many health benefits, they also come with restrictions in regions that have extreme environmental conditions. An example of such a region is the GCC that mainly consists of arid and semi-arid land. Qatar is one such country that consecutively suffers from a high rate of physical inactivity among its population. VR for eSports and eFitness (eSF) are technological alternatives to the traditional real-world methods of SF that have been proven to improve physical fitness in participants (Lotan, et al., 2008). Drawing from existing literature and IT adoption disciplines, this study proposes a model, conceptualizing factors that affect the adoption of VR for eSF in Qatar, paying attention to the local environmental conditions and socio-cultural practices. Abstract: Organizations across all industries seek efficiency, digitization, and automation of their business processes in current times. Low-code development platforms (LCDPs) promise time and cost reduction through rapid and easy-to-use application assembly. Even so, many organizations struggle to understand and identify digital solutions that can advance their business processes. Therefore, we propose a conceptual framework for organizations to assess their business process management (BPM) initiative for LCDP suitability. The framework is developed through a study of literature, a focus group, and expert interviews, resulting in 18 factors to be assessed by organizations. An evaluation using fictitious use case analyses showed that the model was well-received, especially with regard to its completeness and operationality. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work studying organizational adoption of low-code for the sake of BPM initiatives. Collapse

Abstract: OnlineSocial Communities and Networks (OSN) have become widely popular as a source of data or reference for those seeking advice. With accelerated speed there are more and more websites and applications tapping into the 'wisdom of crowds' as a source of information that influences our everyday decision-making. Online communication and existence have revolutionized the way individuals obtain the information they need to make decisions.Using OSN can accelerate or decelerate the DM process for both individuals and communities through the accessing of data from multiple sources. While ample independent research exists on OSN and DM, there is a lack of research into how online technology affects the making of decisions that have an impact on our lives. How do we use OSN in our most important everyday decision-making? The synergy of these themes provides a unique research perspective from which to take a fresh look at both DM research and the actual process of DM as it is affected using OSN.The main purpose of this mini track is to explore and extend, as well as challenge, existing knowledge of OSN and DM. We hope to understand and ascertain whether OSN can support and empower users in their decision-making process and particular phases (1) identify and conceptualize new phases (if any) in the decision-making process that is integral to OSN conversations (2) explore the structure and sequence of decision-making phases arising out of the use of OSN (3) identify biases, strengths and weaknesses of the human psyche that could be attenuated and/or enhanced through appropriate design of OSN for decisionmaking and (4) seek practical guidelines for the design of OSN that support blended decision-making processes that leverages the wisdom of crowds.This mini track has been running for more than 6 years and continues to attract interesting and futuristic papers. This year we had a number of submissions with a diverse range of topics. The three selected papers investigate key issues that exist in the research area.The first paper, From Virtual to Physical: An Exploratory Study on how Online Social Networks and Communities Influence Decision-Making in Everyday Crafting is inspired by the popularity of the maker movement and how the maker's spirit enhances learning and redefines entrepreneurism. The paper, touches on the dynamic process of making as a hobby and how it cuts across virtual and physical media. Diary studies and interviews with arts and craft hobbyists are deployed to investigate how online social networks and communities play a role in influencing making-related decisions. The study results identify YouTube and Pinterest as the primary sources to facilitate crafting ideas whereas YouTube and Reddit were mostly utilized to address execution issues. Collapse

Abstract: New digital ventures are transforming the world around us. Born-digital companies (such as Uber) that were initially established to serve a specific market can quickly detect new opportunities in other markets and respond to these opportunities by reassembling their resources with speed and ease. Limited research has investigated how product architecture enables or hinders the ability of the firm to sense customer-related opportunities and respond to them effectively. By examining two new digital ventures, this study sheds light on new digital ventures' customer agility. Specifically, we address how the characteristics of new digital ventures' product architectures facilitate or hinder the development of the customer-sensing and customer-responding capability dimensions of customer agility. Abstract: Despite significant business opportunities made possible through advancements in technology, readily available digital technologies are often overlooked and not used by new ventures. To address this knowledge gap, this paper looks at the relationships between readily available digital technologies and born-digital new venture capabilities. We use an affordance lens to explore conditions in which born-digital new ventures interact with digital technologies to actualize digital affordances that facilitate the development of important capabilities. First, using the existing literature, we present a research model and its key elements. Then, using data on new ventures in a Canadian university incubator, we conduct fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) and develop seven configurational research propositions as pathways to develop information technology-enabled organizational capabilities in new ventures. Using this retroductive approach, this research builds a contextspecific middle-range theory that explains complex interactions between readily available digital technologies and new venture characteristics, where resources are provided by incubators in dynamic environments, to facilitate the development of ITOCs in the new ventures. Abstract: Developing entrepreneurial resilience by leveraging digital technologies provides entrepreneurs with the potential for cultivating situational awareness, improving social mobility, and creating shared value to accelerate recovery from crises and navigating environmental turbulence (e.g., pandemic). Collective mindfulness is conceptualized as an organizational capability to improve performance in highly turbulent environments. However, there is confusion regarding acknowledging the role of digital technologies and organizational mindfulness as enabling factors to build organizational resilience. By conducting multiple case studies, in this research, we explore specific attributes of digital technologies to better understand how they might affect both mindful and mindless behaviors in entrepreneurial firms. Further, we develop a research model that theorizes the links between attributes of digital technologies and the five processes of collective mindful/mindless behaviors and their impact on the development of entrepreneurial resilience. Abstract: This short paper explores building innovation platforms in the public sector, particularly in public healthcare, through an ecological lens. While existing research has mainly focused on the platform owner's role in orchestrating innovation, this study investigates the strategies used by public organizations and widens the net to analyse how a digital health platform's complementing actors contribute towards innovation within the ecosystem. The paper further highlights the fundamental difference in market logic between public and private platforms. Using the case study of Helseplattformen, a public digital health platform in central Norway, the study aims to identify platform establishment strategies and ecosystem actor interactions that contribute to innovation emergence. The study contributes both theoretically and practically to digital platforms literature and provides guidance for decision-makers and project managers in the public sector who want to adopt or manage similar digital health platforms. Abstract: The rise of digital platforms creates knowledge monopolies that threaten innovation. Their power derives from the imposition of data obligations and persistent coupling on platform participation and their usurpation of the rights to data created by other participants to facilitate information asymmetries. Knowledge monopolies can use machine learning to develop competitive insights unavailable to every other platform participant. This information asymmetry stifles innovation, stokes the growth of the monopoly, and reinforces its ascendency. National or regional gover­ nance structures, such as laws and regulatory authorities, constrain economic monopolies deemed not in the public interest. We argue the need for legislation and an associated regulatory mech­ anism to curtail coercive data obligations, control, eliminate data rights exploitation, and prevent mergers and acquisitions that could create or extend knowledge monopolies.
