Abstract: This paper takes us to a possible future world called Phygitar - a rhythmic phygital ecosystem in 2050 where the co-existence of people, technology, and nature flow in rhythmic synthesis, and where digital and physical are seamlessly fused. Using the approaches of futures-studies, this envisioning is done to better understand concepts from 2050 and see how we can engage with and use those effectively in 2023 for IS theory development and management practice. We use the 2009 movie “Avatar” by James Cameron as the playground of our imagination. We apply illustrative elements to depict some key characteristics and concepts from of this rhythmic phygital ecosystem and show some ways of navigating through it. We hope this will trigger the imagination of scholars of what might be out there in the next generation of post-digital IS theories rather than being rooted in the mindset of what is or what has been. Abstract: This study adopts a signaling theory perspective to examine whether and how crowdfunding (relative to angel financing) influences subsequent venture capital (VC) investments in startups. We used a bivariate probit model with propensity score matching to address the potential endogeneity of the initial funding choice. Subsequently, we found that crowdfunded startups have a lower chance of receiving VC funding than angel-financed startups and that the effect is more negative for startups located outside of startup cluster cities. We show that corporate VCs, unlike independent VCs comprising the majority of VCs, favor crowdfunded startups. Our study contributes to the literature on crowdfunding, startup finance, and the transformative effects of IT-enabled platforms. This study further discusses the practical implications of crowdfunding in startup finance ecosystems. Collapse

Abstract: Owing to increasing adoption rates of voice assistants (VAs), integrating voice commerce (VC) as a new consumer channel is among the top objectives of businesses' current voice initiatives. VC offers consumers a new way of shopping by using VAs, which comes with benefits but also entails risks that extant literature only partially examines. Therefore, this research seeks to understand consumers' perceived benefits and risks when using VC by means of a mixed-methods design. In the first study, we conducted 30 semi-structured interviews with VA users to develop a research model of VC risks and benefits. The second study empirically validated the research model using survey data from 176 participants. According to our results, consumers perceive VC as convenient and enjoyable but also perceive risks regarding the VA's reliability, opacity, and controllability. Thus, we shed light on the determinants of channel choice in e-commerce and provide guidelines for designing VC applications. Collapse

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic caused most companies and organizations to start utilizing remote work. Naturally, this gave rise to many issues regarding employee performance, communication, and collaboration, especially in the early stages of the pandemic. Since the beginning of the pandemic, organizations and employees have learned to cope with the situation. In this paper, we wanted to study how the COVID-induced remote work period has impacted organizational knowledge creation processes. By conducting a case study in a higher education organization, we conclude that the SECI mode of socialization was affected the most by the remote work period. In addition, we found no differences between genders. Younger employees were better at combination, and employees from the ICT department coped better with socializing during the remote work period. Based on the results of the study, we conclude that if remote work remains dominant, organizations might stand to lose more tacit knowledge due to lowered socialization over time. Collapse

Abstract: Digital new market creation has several advantages for incumbent firms (hereafter referred to as ‘incumbents’) that they seek to exploit by using formalization and implementing agility in their new product development (NPD). We introduce the construct of NPD decision agility encompassing the dimensions of sensemaking, speed, and iteration. However, research reveals heterogeneous insights into formalization’s suitability for digital new market creation and NPD decision agility. In response to this research gap, we test our hypotheses by applying a behavioral lens to a sample of 129 incumbents. We reconcile these heterogeneous insights on innovation by showing that formalization increases digital new market creation, but has more fine-grained effects on NPD decision agility. Although improving sensemaking and reducing iteration, formalization has no effect on speed. Furthermore, political behavior increases formalization’s negative effect on iteration. We contribute to research digitalization and agility at the intersection of information systems and innovation management by reconciling these heterogeneous insights. Collapse

Abstract: The 2030 Agenda has pushed practitioners as well as academia to renew their efforts on promoting sustainability, e.g. in how digital technologies can support cities to improve their environmental performance. However, as scholars focus their attention on the positive outcomes of implementation, they often neglect the environmental impact of the artefact itself. We present a study of a Green IS implementation -a municipal Internet of Things (IoT) solution which was expected to decrease the carbon emissions produced by urban waste collection in Sweden. Using a mixed methods approach, we present qualitative findings from interviews & project meetings as well as quantitative findings from a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). We find that (1) the environmental impact of the connected litter-bins -however small -is not necessarily offset by any significant benefits, and (2) the most significant way for the stakeholders to reduce environmental impact is to utilize more ecologically friendly trash bags. Abstract: Internet of Things (IoT) holds significant potential for municipal efficiency and effectiveness. It enables subsystems to seamlessly communicate and permits their integration into a connected whole, affording new opportunities for value creation. In this paper, we present a study of municipal litter-bins that have been retrofitted with sensors to convey data on trash volume in each receptacle. Based on interviews, strategy documents, and notes from project meetings, we analyse their implementation from a data quality perspective and reflect on social-and technical issues. The case illustrates the propensity and consequences of overestimating benefits and oversimplifying technical interventions. This paper contributes to our practical understanding of socio-technical implications of technology use in the public sector in general and the deployment of IoT for smart cities in particular. Abstract: Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) is a wireless communication technology that enables a wide range of applications, from smart cities to industrial automation. As a part of the 5G extension, NB-IoT promises to connect billions of devices with low-power and low-cost requirements. However, with the advent of quantum computers, the incoming NB-IoT era is already under threat by these devices, which might break the conventional cryptographic algorithms that can be adapted to secure NB-IoT devices on large scale. In this context, we investigate the feasibility of using post-quantum key exchange and signature algorithms for securing NB-IoT applications. We develop a realistic ns-3 environment to represent the characteristics of NB-IoT networks and analyze the usage of post-quantum algorithms to secure communication. Our findings suggest that using NIST-selected post-quantum key-exchange protocol Kyber does not introduce significant overhead, but post-quantum signature schemes can result in impractical latency times and lower throughputs. Abstract: Knowledge management (KM) impacts have typically been examined on the value of knowledge to organizations but not individuals. This paper uses survey data (186 employees) and qualitative data (300 + employees) at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to examine the effects of four KM mechanisms (social learning, learning from others through IT, learning from IT, and IT-based knowledge substitution) and common knowledge on the individual and organizational value of knowledge. The results indicate that common knowledge and the two interpersonal mechanisms (social learning, learning from others through IT) enhance the perceived value of knowledge at both levels, but both mechanisms that rely on IT for the knowledge (learning from IT, IT-based knowledge substitution) reduce the perceived knowledge value at one level and have no significant effect at the other level. Further, common knowledge strengthens the positive effects of both interpersonal mechanisms, and weakens the negative effects of IT-based knowledge substitution, on perceived value of knowledge at both levels.
