Abstract: Online mail order and online retail purchases have increased rapidly in recent years worldwide, with Covid-19 forcing almost all non-grocery shopping to move online. These practices have facilitated the availability of new data sources, such as web behavioural variables providing scope for innovation in credit risk analysis and de­ cision practices. This paper examines new web browsing variables and incorporates them into survival analysis as predictors of probability of default (PD). Using a large sample of purchase and repayment credit accounts from a major digital retailer and financial services provider, we show that these new variables enhance the predictive accuracy of probability of default (PD) models at account level. This also holds in the absence of credit bureau data, therefore, the new information can help people who may not have a credit history (thin file) who cannot be assessed using traditional variables. Moreover, we leverage on the dynamic nature of these new web variables and explore their predictive value in short and long- term horizons. By adding macroeconomic variables, the possibility for stress-testing is provided. Our empirical findings provide insights into web browsing behaviour, highlight how the inclusion of non-standard variables can improve credit risk scoring models and lending de­ cisions and may provide a solution to the thin files problem. Our results also suggest a direct value added to the online retail credit industry as firms should leverage the increasing trend of consumers embracing the digital environment. Collapse

Abstract: This paper explores how COVID-19 has impacted e-participation, i.e., participation by electronic means, in public decision-making, specifically in certain forms of local community budgeting. We expound the concept of e-participation and its sub-concepts and investigate these as applicable to participatory budgeting. 34 managers in five City Halls in Poland were interviewed on their views and experiences with moving public interactions on-line during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly as these interactions relate to participatory budgeting. The findings indicate that COVID-19 has indeed accelerated the digitalization of the participatory budgeting procedures, and to some extent may have increased community participation in general. Abstract: Ecommerce websites increasingly provide predictive analytics-based advice (PAA), such as advice about future potential price reductions. Establishing consumer-trust in these advice-giving systems imposes unique and novel challenges. First, PAA about future alternatives that can benefit the consumer appears to inherently contradict the business goal of selling a product quickly and at high profit margins. Second, PAA is based on mathematical models that are non-transparent to the user. Third, PAA advice is inherently uncertain, and can be perceived as subjectively imposed in algorithms. Utilizing Toulmin's argumentation-model, we investigate the influence of advice-justification statements in overcoming these difficulties. Based on three experimental studies, in which respondents are provided with the advice of PAA systems, we show evidence for the different roles Toulmin's statement-types play in enhancing various trusting-beliefs in PAA systems. Provision of warrants is mostly associated with enhanced competence beliefs; rebuttals with integrity beliefs; backings both competence and benevolence; and data statements enhance competence, integrity, and benevolence beliefs. Abstract: Connected vehicles generate new data streams that present promising opportunities for policymakers to monitor and learn from events and behavior. To explore what we can learn from how public entities leverage ubiquitous data streams for policy development and enforcement, we draw on a case study of the standard Mobility Data Specification (MDS) and its use by cities to regulate E-scooter operators. Our findings suggest that (1) the richness of real-time data changes the speed of policy revision, (2) data access enables moving some micro-decisions to the edge, and (3) policy will be formulated as fixed or flexible with different amendment rules. Abstract: Great potential exists for the use of information systems (IS) in medical research, as they already form the backbone of several long-term medical research projects. IS can potentially support practitioner-researchers (practitioners who conduct research in their areas of practice) by enabling collaboration, particularly when the number of cases is low and the treatment strategy is centralised. However, practitioner-researchers and academic researchers differ in their research approaches. In this clinical IS research effort, we designed an IS, together with a local hospital, for supporting research on pancreatic cancer by applying a design science research (DSR) approach. We also observed how DSR is accepted and used by practitioner-researchers in this context. Consequently, we not only developed an IS but also gained insights into the benefits of DSR in projects with heterogeneous participants, namely those from various fields with different experiences and requirements. The results show that DSR contributes to mutual understanding, transparency in the design process and long-term benefits for all parties involved, which was further confirmed by post-hoc interviews. Abstract: Governments and health organizations are increasingly using dashboards to provide real-time information during natural disasters and pandemics. Although these dashboards aim to make crisisrelated information accessible to the general public, the average user can have a hard time interacting with them and finding the information needed to make everyday decisions. To address this challenge, we draw on the theory of effective use to propose a theory-driven design for conversational dashboards intended for crisis response that can improve users' transparent interaction with these dashboards and facilitate access to crisis-related information during crises. We instantiate our proposed design in a conversational dashboard for the COVID-19 pandemic that enables natural language interaction in spoken or written form and helps users familiarize themselves with the use of natural language through conversational onboarding. The evaluation of our artifact shows that being able to use natural language improves users' interaction with the dashboard and ultimately increases their efficiency and effectiveness in finding information. This positive effect is amplified when users complete the onboarding before interacting with the dashboard, particularly when they can use both natural language and mouse interaction. Our findings contribute to research on dashboard design, both in general and in the specific context of crisis response, by providing prescriptive knowledge for extending crisis response dashboards with natural language interaction capabilities. In addition, our work contributes to the democratization of data science by proposing design guidelines for making information on crisis response dashboards more accessible to the general public.Marcel Ruoff is a PhD student at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany. Abstract: Evermann and Rönkkö (2023) overview recent advances in PLS, and while they describe some advances with several useful recommendations, we argue that they do not fully deliver on their paper's promise. In this response, we argue that their position presents an unbalanced view and ignores several methodological advances that IS scholars have made. Further, several studies that highlight PLS's shortcomings seem to be based on specially designed cases that do not necessarily represent how researchers typically use PLS. In our response, we call for a more balanced debate that considers different perspectives and for researchers to examine PLS's performance in a fair manner. While we do not disagree with Evermann and Rönkkö's (2023) recommendations, factors such as insufficient tool support challenge efforts to implement them, and we observe that, besides scholars using PLS, editors and reviewers also have a responsibility to recognize methodological advances. We commend Evermann and Rönkkö (2023) for their efforts in studying PLS's limitations, which have spurred several methodological advances, but we also caution that we should not "throw the baby out with the bathwater" by discarding PLS due to its known limitations. Abstract: The inability to touch products is a fundamental shortcoming in online shopping because humans typically use the sense of touch to evaluate the utilitarian product functionality and to obtain hedonic sensory enjoyment, which the instrumental and autotelic need for touch capture. This study of 900 consumers looks at the interplay between need for touch and imagination to study how imagination compensates for the lack of touch when consumers shop in a 360-virtual store. The study finds that while telepresence of a 360-virtual store improves consumer attitudes toward virtual shopping, the need for hedonic sensory enjoyment – autotelic need for touch –significantly reduces this effect. Further, imagination can compensate for the need for touch; yet this finding holds only for the instrumental need for touch, not for the autotelic need for touch. Consequently, we conclude that imagination can compensate for the utilitarian need to touch products in a 360-virtual store. Collapse
