Abstract: The United Nations Climate Change (UNCC) report in 2022 warns that the likelihood of global warming exceeding 1.5°C by 2026 has surpassed 50%. Climate change is a global problem that requires collective action, and companies have a significant role to play in mitigating climate change. Companies have already started to incorporate climate change risk and liabilities in their annual reports. Monitoring a company's progress in transitioning to sustainability can help stakeholders make informed decisions. However, existing approaches for sustainability monitoring of annual reports are limited in scalability, mainly because of the manual steps involved. Therefore, we designed and evaluated a more scalable artifact using state-of-the-art natural language processing (NLP) techniques to monitor companies' sustainability targets based on their annual reports. This work presents a prototype that improves upon the current state of practice and contributes to the body of knowledge by outlining key design decisions. Collapse

Abstract: There has been an increased usage and popularity of digital platforms during the COVID-19 crisis. This has resulted in many new types of digital platforms emerging that are tied to specific localities and based on emergent needs. This article presents the results of a study on the ClickforVic digital platform that was started during the first 2020 lockdown in Melbourne, Australia as a way for country farmers to connect with urban consumers. The study is premised on transformational entrepreneurship theory that enables a focus on the so­ cietal changes that have resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic. A semi-structured in-depth interview approach was utilised to understand how farm entrepreneurs perceived the digital platform and how this contributed to transformational entrepreneurship outcomes. The study is amongst the first to incorporate a digital platform, farm entrepreneurship, transformational entrepreneurship and COVID-19 perspective. The findings suggest that farm entrepreneurs are driven by financial, social and community goals during a crisis that influences their usage of digital platforms. As a consequence, the findings contribute to managerial practice and policy debate by highlighting the way digital platforms can be used in times of crisis to produce transformational entrepre­ neurship outcomes. Abstract: Employees in organizations are frequently subject to performance goals such as sales or publication targets. However, often employees do not know what actions will allow them to meet these goals. To perform such tasks effectively, employees need to explore to quickly learn from experience which among the available alternatives offers the higher reward potential, so that they can concentrate subsequent efforts on exploiting it. Prior work models such explore-exploit problems as an adaptive learning process, where employees sequentially sample various options and learn from feedback. However, we currently do not know how performance goals influence this adaptive learning process. We argue that performance goals influence the adaptive learning process by modifying how feedback is perceived. Individuals subject to challenging goals are more likely to interpret feedback from poor alternatives as failures. Therefore, they quickly develop high belief strength that the inferior alternative is worse than the superior alternative, enabling them to reduce “useless exploration,” but also making them slow to adapt to environmental shocks. We test our predictions in a series of laboratory experiments and find that decision makers subject to challenging goals exploit more (relative to those with moderate goals). We also show that such an exploitation focus, while beneficial in stable environments, is detrimental in unstable ones. Our finding that challenging performance goals improve performance in learning tasks stands in contrast to prior findings that such goals inhibit performance in search tasks, an insight that warrants further study to improve our understanding of goal setting in the knowledge economy.History: This paper has been accepted for the Organization Science Special Issue on Experiments in Organizational Theory.Funding: K. Abstract: There is limited systematic research on managerial response strategies to online customer complaints and negative reviews. In this paper, we synthesize justice theory and service recovery literature to develop a model that explores the mechanisms through which appropriate managerial responses to customer complaints influence aggregate future review valence and complaints. We test our model using data from TripAdvisor.com, a leading travel review platform. Using text analysis (e.g., natural language processing and deep learning), we extract and code the variables in our model from the reviews and the managerial responses to these reviews. Key findings indicate that responding to customer reviews—in particular, negative reviews—will have a positive influence on future review valence. Moreover, responses with more rational cues than emotional cues to customer complaints about procedural unfairness will have a positive influence on future review valence. However, responses with more rational cues than emotional cues to customer complaints about interactional unfairness will have a negative influence on future review valence. Moreover, we find that when reviews have both distributive and interactional unfairness, responses with more rational cues matter. In addition, we find that both rational cues and emotional cues in responses to distributive unfairness and rational cues in responses to procedural unfairness are effective to decrease the future occurrence of similar complaints. Abstract: The development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) requires careful reflection. With advances in AI, there is growing realization that some basic parameters of our human condition will change in the future, desirably or undesirably. AI technologies are neither good nor bad, but we must make a societal choice to embed fundamental human rights and democratic values when we design and use such technologies. A tool that can empower can also become a tool for mass surveillance or a tool for perpetuating discrimination. With promises of AI, we as a society must address its failings as well. In this paper we propose that our morality may well weigh on our principled judgment on such technologies. We use the Moral Stages and the Moral Foundations theories to explore whether people with particular moral orientations are likely to be at odds accepting usefulness of technologies that violate our rights to privacy or nondiscrimination. Abstract: Project management methodology is important to the success of a project. However, changes in technology and practitioner approach have led to a mix of methodologies known as hybrid. This research sought to identify the types of project management methodologies practitioners currently use and determine factors that impact how a project manager selects a methodology.A survey questionnaire was used to identify methodologies and types of project management tools, techniques, and processes used. Correlation and chi-square analysis analyzed if three specific factors (industry, project manager experience level, and technology project type) influenced the selection of a predictive, adaptive, or hybrid methodology. The results showed that industry and technology project type are factors in the methodology selection, but project manager years of experience was not. Overall, the analysis supported that there is no "one size fits all" when it comes to methodology selection, but hybrid is emerging as the predominant approach. Abstract: In an increasingly fast-paced work environment filled with distractions, an overabundance of information, and complex decision making, scholars and practitioners alike have begun to recognize the need to slow down and direct attention to the present moment. As such, the study and implementation of mindfulness in the workplace has received growing attention in recent years. This body of work, however, is preoccupied with the outcomes of individual- and collective-level mindfulness, largely ignoring mindfulness as brought into workplace interactions and relationships. In this study, we take a qualitative, grounded theory approach wherein we put forth and unpack a model of interpersonal mindfulness infusion: the process whereby individuals instill their mindfulness into their workplace interactions and relationships. We further distinguish between formal and informal and self- and other-focused mindfulness practices. We show how these practices underlie the mindfulness infusion process and can enhance workplace interactions and relationships. In doing so, we contribute to the organizational literature on mindfulness and positive relationships at work. Collapse

Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) possesses the potential to augment customer service employees e.g. via decision support or solution recommendations. Still, its underlying data for training and testing the AI systems is provided by human annotators through human-in-the-loop configurations. However, due to the high effort for annotators and lack of incentives, AI systems face low underlying data quality. That in turn results in low prediction performance and limited acceptance by the targeted user group. Faced with the enormous volume and increasing complexity of service requests, IT service management (ITSM) especially, relies on high data quality for AI systems and incorporating domain-specific knowledge. By analyzing the existing labeling process in that specific case, we design a revised to-be process and develop a conceptual model from a value co-creation perspective. Finally, a functional prototype as an instantiation in the ITSM domain is implemented and evaluated through accuracy metrics and user evaluation. The results show that the new process increases the perceived value of both labeling quality and the perceived prediction quality. Thus, we contribute a conceptual model that supports the systematic design of efficient and interactive labeling processes in diverse applications of reinforcement learning systems. Collapse

Abstract: The Internet is embedded in all aspects of our life. Internet companies have proliferated, and their influence on shaping today’s economies, cultures, and societies has also grown. However, it is not clear how the Internet-based industry, its players, and their strategic orientations evolved. Through a longitudinal clustering analysis, this study explores the strategic orientations adopted by 103 public Internet-based businesses over the past 20 years at three different points in time (2000, 2010, and 2020). The results show that firms’ strategies changed from 2000 to 2010. From 2010 to 2020, we observed that some companies altered their strategy, while others kept a consistent strategic approach. The outcomes from these decisions are discussed to shed light on how companies (un)successfully navigated the digital transformation. These findings are also interpreted to form a basis for theory building. Collapse
