Abstract: The so called Metaverse is among the most popular emerging themes in contemporary business and academic discourses related to digital transformation. Beside the hype and buzz around the topic, recent research has established important progress related to the technical foundations and use-case scenarios. However, the preconditions to manifest these promising potentials, that is the underlying socio-technical ecosystem, is, to date, not well-understood. In particular, we still do not know much about the key building blocks of technical knowledge and who creates this knowledge base necessary for the Metaverse. Therefore, in this study, employing cluster-analysis to a complex dataset involving 2297 Metaverse-patents, we reveal key areas of technological knowledge as well as important actor groups shaping the development of the knowledge base. Building upon these inductively derived knowledge generation structures, we discuss important implications for managers and academics and propose an Information Systems research agenda to further explore the emerging Metaverse ecosystem. Abstract: Biometric technologies are complex hardware and software infrastructures that link biometric data such as fingerprints, iris scans, face scans, or DNA data with personal data. A handful of foreign private actors have implemented biometric solutions in more than half of African countries. This paper investigates the politics of biometric artifacts, it looks at how biometric data furnish the basis for the emergence and institutionalization of certain political discourses and power configurations. To this aim, we link the study of biometric data artifacts to the role of private contractors and the full-scale involvement of public institutions in the establishment of border control markets. The empirical context of the research is the work practices of the actors involved in the export of biometric technologies for border security solutions in Namibia. Preliminary findings suggest that the technological and political rationalities of biometric solutions introduce a set of novel problems in the making and management of data profiles. Border control as a political issue seems to be increasingly intermeshed with a logic of economic profit and technological efficiency raising questions of data justice and political accountability. Abstract: Of all emerging technologies, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is perhaps the most debated topic in contemporary society because it promises to redefine and disrupt several sectors. At the same time, AI poses challenges for policymakers and decision-makers, particularly regarding formulating strategies and regulations to address their stakeholders’ needs and perceptions. This paper explores stakeholder perceptions as expressed through their participation in the formulation of Europe’s AI strategy and sheds light on the challenges of AI in Europe and the expectations for the future. Our analysis reveals six dimensions towards an AI strategy; ecosystems, education, liability, data availability sufficiency & protection, governance and autonomy. It draws on these dimensions to construct a desires-realities framework for AI strategy in Europe and provide a research agenda for addressing existing realities. Our findings contribute to understanding stakeholder desires on AI and hold important implications for research, practice and policymaking. Collapse

Abstract: High-reliability organizations (HROs) and their complex operating models have been a focus of scholarly work for more than three decades. Recently, HROs have been challenged by new market pressures that require them to digitally transform in ways that affect their identity and value creation models while still maintaining high levels of security and efficiency. This longitudinal, in-depth single-case study of a major European utility company examines the role of HRO identity in digital transformation (DT), specifically in terms of tensions between innovation and trans­ formation on the one hand, and maintaining reliable operations on the other. Our findings show how tensions between HROs’ identity and key features of DT give rise to threat perceptions and self-protective behaviors by the IT workforce, that eventually may derail the transformation process. We develop a process model that highlights the sources and consequences of identity misalignment during major DT initiatives in HROs. In doing so, we extend the research on D T by highlighting the importance of bottom-up processes for DT success and failure, especially con­ cerning the IT function’s perception of organizational identity. Abstract: Large-scale sharing networks rely on digitally enabled platforms that connect users beyond the limits of social and geographical proximity. The phenomenon of the Digital Sharing Economy (DSE) embraces a broad diversity of sharing patterns. This paper aims to present an exhaustive classification of these patterns. It illustrates 5504 different sharing models that vary in the attributes of their fundamental business model components, i.e., the type of shareable resources, resource providers, resource receivers and sharing practices. This classification can be useful to characterize the DSE and visualize sharing and exchange patterns within its networks. In particular, the classification of digital sharing models can help platform providers position themselves in the broad spectrum of market and non-market-based sharing and tap into practicable business model innovations in the DSE domain. Abstract: The advent of ‘digital’ ways of working and organising is unequivocally transforming the very fabric of work, leading to an increasingly uncertain, unsettled, and fluid environment. Research has traditionally anchored worker identity in fixed and place-bound concepts. However, in the digital workplace, where work is more akin to a performance, unfolding over time, and processual in nature, our understanding of work and theories of worker identity are called into question. In this paper, we ask the question: how is digital worker identity performed in such fluid and unsettled work settings? To explain digital worker identity performance, we investigate digital nomadism as an extremely fluid and unsettled case of digital work. We study digital nomads, high-skilled professionals who use digital technologies to work remotely and lead a nomadic lifestyle, in a multi-sited ethnographic field study. Based on a process-relational perspective, we are theorising how the identity of digital nomads, their “becoming,” is performed as an ongoing process along lines of identity performance. This is an intermediate “product of theorising,” in accord with the aim of the special issue, but provides a foundation for a novel process-relational theory of identity performance in unsettled digital work. Abstract: Research on blockchain has found that the technology is no silver bullet compared to traditional data structures due to limitations regarding decentralization, security, and scalability. These limitations are summarized in the blockchain trilemma, which today represents the greatest barrier to blockchain adoption and applicability. To address these limitations, recent advancements by blockchain businesses have focused on a new cryptographic technique called "Zero-knowledge proofs". While these primitives have been around for some time and despite their potential significance on blockchains, not much is known in information systems research about them and their potential effects. Therefore, we employ a multivocal literature review to explore this new tool and find that although it has the potential to resolve the trilemma, it currently only solves it in certain dimensions, which necessitates further attention and research.
