Abstract: The COVID-19 crisis has made virtual collaboration (VC) an issue across the globe. Employees who once worked in person with their coworkers have had to work from home, relying solely on information and communication technologies to collaborate. This has led to a variety of challenges related to occupational wellbeing (OWB). This study identifies measures organizations have implemented in response. Based on 16 interviews with HR professionals, the findings reveal a number of organizational measures that may help promote OWB in VC. Collapse

Abstract: The complex and uncertain environment of the humanitarian response to crises can lead to data bias, which can affect decision-making. Evidence of data bias in crisis information management (CIM) remains scattered despite its potentially significant impact on crisis response. To understand what biases emerge in complex crises and how they affect CIM, we conducted a combined interview and document analysis study. Focusing on the largest humanitarian crisis in the world, i.e., the conflict in Yemen, we conducted 25 interviews with managers and analysts of response organizations, and assessed 47 reports and datasets created by response organizations in Yemen. We find evidence of a cycle of bias reinforcement through which bias cascades between field, head­ quarters and donor levels of crisis response. Researchers, as well as practitioners, need to consider these un­ derlying biases and reinforcement loops because they influence what data can be collected when, by whom, from whom, and how the data is shared and used. To the CIM literature, we contribute an in-depth understanding of how four types of data bias emerge in crises: political, accessibility, topical, and sampling bias. Collapse

Abstract: We draw on group information-processing theory to investigate how target boards of directors may contribute to target value capture during the private negotiations phase in acquisitions. We view target boards as information-processing groups and private negotiations as information-processing tasks. We argue that target board meeting frequency is associated with increased processing—gathering, sharing, and analyzing—of acquisition-related information, which improves target bargaining and, ultimately, target value capture. We further posit that this value-enhancing effect of target board meeting frequency is more pronounced when target board composition improves the ability of target boards to process acquisition-related information. Finally, we expect that meeting frequency is more consequential for target bargaining and value capture when acquisition complexity imposes high information-processing demands on the target boards during private negotiations. Empirical evidence from a sample of acquisitions of publicly listed firms in the United States offers support for our group information-processing perspective on board contribution to shareholder value in firms targeted for acquisition. Abstract: The classification of sensorimotor rhythms in electroencephalography signals can enable paralyzed individuals, for example, to make yes/no decisions. In practice, these approaches are hard to implement due to the variability of electroencephalography signals between and within subjects. Therefore, we report a novel and fast machine learning model, meeting the need for efficiency and reliability as well as low calibration and training time. Our model extracts finely graded frequency bands from motor imagery electroencephalography data by using power spectral density and training a random forest algorithm for classification. The goal was to create a non-invasive generalizable method by training the algorithm with subject-independent EEG data. We evaluate our approach using one of the currently largest publicly available electroencephalography datasets. With a balanced accuracy of 73.94%, our novel algorithm outperforms other state-of-the-art non-subject-dependent algorithms. Collapse

Abstract: This paper explores the Information Systems project implementations in organizations. It focuses on the actualization of the affordances that result from the intertwining of the Information Technology (IT) artefact and the organization and we answer to the following research question "How do organizations actualize affordances?" With a qualitative multiple case study on the different local entities of an international leading retailer, this research identifies that previous research omitted the top management sponsorship as one of the main influences for the actualization process. Moreover, constrains perception is observed in the collected data and its role is assessed. This paper contributes the development of the affordance theory by providing an updated process-based integrative theoretical framework for affordances at the organizational level, aimed to support further research on Information Systems. Abstract: This study proposes and validates a new industry taxonomy to understand the use of IT that generates superior economic returns based on the specific economic and competitive characteristics of four different industry types and the strategic role of IT in each of these industry environments. Our findings extend the well-established industry taxonomy on the strategic role of IT (Automate, Informate, Transform) by considering how IT is changing the nature of the product/service in industries where transformational logics prevail. We found that in industries where the product/service is digital in nature, the firms that achieve higher economic returns are those where IT is used to support dual strategies based on the integration of cost leadership and differentiation. Conversely, in other industries – with the exception of those producing commodities – the firms that achieve superior returns are those that use IT to support differentiation. The results of this study can help managers make intelligent decisions about competitive strategies and IT investments, depending on the business environment of the sector in which the firm operates and the generative potential of emerging technologies to do new things. Abstract: In social and health care the use of technology that utilizes data has great potential from the point of view of value creation. This case study examines the factors that impact the value potential realization of AI prediction models as part of the customer/patient service need assessment process. The research focuses on a pilot project of a Finnish case organization, in which prediction models were tested in child welfare and mental health services. Both positive and negative value-realizing factors were found in the research. The information produced by artificial intelligence has great value potential. Regulation and transparency of data need to be addressed, but at the same time, more flexible use of social and health register data needs to be considered to ensure that resources are allocated in a value-added way. Abstract: Digital industrial platforms are increasingly implemented as an inter-organizational digital infrastructure to unlock numerous sources of value. Establishing an appropriate pricing strategy is pivotal for platform providers' success. To profit from these value sources, existing research considers value-based pricing as a superior and customeroriented pricing strategy, enabling platform organizations to capitalize on the technological platform integration in the manufacturing domain. However, little is known about value-based pricing in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and how platform organizations understand and establish it. To advance the understanding of value-based pricing at the nexus of IIoT and digital platforms, we report on a qualitative study spanning 19 interviews with digital industrial platform providers. Our preliminary findings incorporate core characteristics, preconditions, outcomes, challenges, and guiding principles experienced by the experts, connecting the fragmented research streams on value-based pricing and digital platforms in IIoT and supporting platform organizations in crafting financially sustainable business models. Abstract: Human error is one of the biggest cybersecurity vulnerabilities in organizations, making organizational security solutions become ineffective. It is therefore crucial for organizations to adapt their risk management in concordance to arising threats. Using the Technology Threat Avoidance Theory (TTAT) as a theoretical lens, this article investigates the relationship between security threats, employees' risk perception, and avoidance behavior. While recent research has suggested that an individual's dispositional risk propensity can influence the perception of technology threats, we argue that additional risk facets, namely situational and organizational risk propensity, can influence employees' threat perception. Through a scenario-based online experiment, our study reveals that risk perception in a work environment is not a static risk assessment but rather depends on situational aspects and the organization's risk propensity. Our study contributes to existing research by investigating the different aspects of risk-taking in an organizational context improving our understanding of employees' behavior at work. Collapse
