Abstract: In today’s big data environment, missing values continue to be a problem that harms data quality. The bias caused by missing values raises the highest concern, as it cannot be eliminated simply by increasing the sample size. Although the statistics literature has developed approaches to handling missing values and formulated assumptions regarding when these approaches generate valid statistical inferences, these prescriptions have yet to be broadly accepted by many social science disciplines, including the information systems (IS) discipline. By reviewing recently published empirical research in information systems, we find that missing values are indeed an important and pervasive problem. We believe that a review of missing value theory is necessary and timely for the IS community to understand the nature of missing values and to promote more rigorous research practice when missing values are often unavoidable. In addition, the missing not at random (MNAR) mechanism brings about challenges in parameter estimation. We contribute to research practice by proposing and demonstrating the superior performance of a Monte Carlo likelihood approach in correcting bias in parameter estimation. Abstract: The antecedents of employees’ cyberloafing (internet use for nonwork purposes during office hours) have become a burgeoning research topic. This research therefore explores how and when participative leadership serves as an important antecedent to employees’ cyberloafing. Drawing upon self-concept-based theory, we hypothesize that participative leadership can reduce the cyberloafing of employees with a high need for power by increasing their organization-based self-esteem (OBSE). Analyzing survey data from 212 employee-coworker dyads, we have found that participative leadership is positively related to employees’ OBSE, which, in turn, is negatively related to employees’ cyberloafing. Moreover, employees’ need for power strengthens the relationship between participative leadership and employees’ OBSE as well as the indirect relationship between participative leadership and employees’ cyberloafing through their OBSE. These relationships are significant (versus nonsignificant) when employees’ need for power is high (versus low). Accordingly, this research identifies a novel predictor of employees’ cyberloafing and offers insights for organizational leaders aiming to manage employees’ cyberloafing wisely. Collapse

Abstract: E-commerce platforms often use collaborative filtering (CF) algorithms to recommend products to consumers. What recommendations consumers receive and how they respond to the recommendations largely depend on the design of CF algorithms. However, the extant empirical research on recommender systems has primarily focused on how the presence of recommendations affects product demand, without considering the underlying algorithm design. Leveraging a field experiment on a major e-commerce platform, we examine the differential impact of two widely used CF designs: view-also-view (VAV) and purchase-also-purchase (PAP). We found several striking differences between the impact of these two designs on individual products. First, VAV is about seven times more effective in generating additional product views than PAP but only about twice as effective in generating sales due to a lower conversion rate. Second, VAV is more effective in increasing views for more expensive products, whereas PAP is more effective in increasing the sales of cheaper products. Third, VAV is less effective in increasing the views but more effective in increasing the sales of products with higher purchase incidence rates (PIRs). Finally, when aggregated over all products with the same levels of price or PIRs, VAV dominates PAP in generating views and the difference is more striking for products with higher prices or lower PIRs. Interestingly, PAP is more effective than VAV in increasing the sales of products with low prices or moderate PIRs, though VAV generates more sales than PAP overall. Our findings suggest that platforms may benefit from employing different CF designs for different types of products. Collapse

Abstract: Experimental research in the business disciplines often focuses on the overall treatment effect and the heterogeneity therein. Whereas this type of research allows us to understand the strength and direction of the treatment effect under different conditions, it does not directly speak to the generative mechanisms, namely, why and how the effect arises. A standard procedure to identify the mechanisms underlying a treatment effect is mediation analysis, but extant mediation analysis frameworks either have no causal interpretation or require the mediators to be unconfounded. Because mediators are posttreatment variables that typically cannot be preassigned beforehand, the endogeneity of mediators remains a serious concern even in randomized experiments. In response to this issue, we present a flexible endogenous mediation analysis framework that still has causal interpretation when the mediator is endogenous. We then discuss the identification conditions for different types of endogenous mediators, including unobserved or partially observed ones, under this framework. We show that endogenous mediation models can be parametrically identified without an instrumental variable when the generating process of the mediator is nonlinear. We further examine how the identification strengths of these models vary with a series of factors, including the level of endogeneity, the goodness of fit of the mediator model, the percentage of observed mediator values, and the misspecification of the error terms. Finally, we provide guidelines on when and how to use endogenous mediation analysis and discuss implications for experimental design and empirical research. Abstract: Referral reward programs (RRPs) are a cost-effective means for companies to acquire new customers, and they have therefore been adopted by diverse businesses. This research investigates how the reward–product congruity of nonmonetary rewards influences consumers' recommendation intention in online RRPs. Specifically, drawing on the theories of congruity fit and schema congruity, we propose that nonmonetary rewards with moderate congruity trigger consumers' recommendation intention in RRPs more than those with high and low congruity. Moreover, this inverted U-shaped relationship is moderated by factors that influence the individual cognitive state (i.e., need for cognition and utilitarian versus hedonic products). An experiment with a 3 (reward–product congruity: high/moderate/low) × 2 (product type: utilitarian app/hedonic app) mixed factorial design was conducted to test our hypotheses. The results largely support our propositions. First, we find an inverted Ushaped relationship between reward–product congruity and recommendation intention and a mediated effect of reward attractiveness. Furthermore, need for cognition moderates the effects of reward–product congruity on recommendation intention, and there is a three-way interaction effect among product type, need for cognition, and reward–product congruity. Abstract: The rise of crowdlending enables small firms to borrow capital where transaction costs are reduced and financial accessibility is improved. Crowdlending platforms require lenders to depend solely on the information provided by its borrowers. Such information reliance could impact lenders’ financial behavior and investment decision and return. In this study, we develop a model to understand what elements and factors influence the formation of trust in crowdlending. Our results suggest that lenders are likely to pay more attention to platform quality and risk mitigation strategy than attractive loan cues. Our findings can aid the crowdlending industry in growing its investor base and increasing potential customers’ access to capital. Abstract: The rapid growth of the population in cities has given rise to major urban challenges. This has led city governments to use technical solutions based on Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), arising the concept of smart city (SC). However, the strategy followed to become smart is still very diffuse. This paper seeks to analyze the opinion of the ICT managers of local governments in their initial stage of cities to become smart. To achieve this aim, we have conducted empirical research in Costa Rican cities, which are initiating the SC process, but emphasizing the technological implementation strategy they are using. Concretely, this paper analyzes variables such as the number of ICT projects, dimensions, goals and expected impacts as well as their association. Abstract: Ecosystems are emerging in almost all sectors. In the banking sector, they enable the disruption of traditional value chains and the emergence of entirely new types of value creation settings. Actors who engage in such constructs need specific organizational capabilities. This is especially true when particular technologies, in the presented case blockchain technology, are used to enable collaborative value creation between actors. We extend organizational capabilities as previously described in the context of platform ecosystems. For this purpose, we conducted a longitudinal case study of the Swiss blockchain-enabled platform ecosystem in the financial services sector. We analyzed the data using the theoretical perspective of organizational capabilities. Initial results confirm the organizational capabilities but indicate a different distribution reflecting the development stages of the ecosystem. Abstract: Some classes of person-oriented services such as healthcare services require individualization to be effective. Individualizing services and corresponding patient pathways are costly. To provide such services in an individualized, but also efficient manner, service modularization is known as a solution. Until now, modularization parameters that take healthcare specificities into account are missing. This paper closes this gap. Following a design science research approach, we iteratively build and evaluate a set of healthcare-specific modularization parameters. For requirements elicitation, refinement of the modularization parameters and their evaluation, we conduct interviews with domain experts from patient pathways in oncology care as well as with service design and business development experts. As main theoretical contribution, this paper provides design knowledge for the modularization of healthcare services. For practice, the set of parameters assists healthcare providers in the efficient provision of individualized, patient-centric solutions and patient pathways. Collapse

Abstract: The Big Five personality inventory is applied in various research contexts to provide explanations for individuals' behavior. Nevertheless, approaches that consider personality profiles as a combination of different personality dimensions are rare. Drawing on configuration theory, we aim to address these research gaps by providing insights on configurations of personality profiles and how they affect coping behavior in response to experiencing technostress. This study uses survey data from 233 respondents and conducts a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis to identify personality profiles that pursue a proactive and reactive coping strategy respectively in response to experiencing technostress. We reveal four configurations in the analysis per coping strategy representing distinct personality profiles. Thereby, we contribute to personality and coping research within the context of technostress in e-commerce.
