Abstract: One needs to look only at recent data breaches to be reminded of the severe and far-reaching damage caused by privacy threats. In light of these threats, global healthcare leaders are striving to understand how to protect patient information without the loss of benefits (utility) that results from privacy-preserving mechanisms. Consequently, our study examines the relatively unexplored issue of simultaneously responding to information privacy threats and maintaining utility in a healthcare privacy compliance context. Counterintuitively, we also identify a symbiotic relationship between these two focal and interdependent efforts. We adopt an interpretive qualitative research method leveraging the value-focused thinking (VFT) approach which results in two major contributions: (1) the development of a value-driven framework presented as a means-end objective network providing a list of 16 means objectives and seven key fundamental objectives enabling higher-quality privacy decision making vis-à-vis privacy and utility. Our second and central contribution (2) is a theoretical framework of privacy impact assessment (PIA) emphasising the interplay and balance between making appropriate decisions in responding to information privacy while not hindering healthcare operations. Abstract: The HICSS-56 edition of the mini track on innovation and entrepreneurship theory and practice brings another interesting set of research papers to the forefront of addressing changes in digital entrepreneurship practice, theory, and education. As in previous editions, these studies take place within the context of knowledge management and organizational transformation and focus on understanding where the locus of entrepreneurial knowledge resides, how it is achieved, and how business models continue to evolve in the digital venture space. Through the HICSS rigorous peer reviewing process, eight articles were ultimately selected from almost twenty submissions to the mini track, a number that reflects the growing interest in innovation and entrepreneurship knowledge creation and capture research. Abstract: Individuals increasingly seek algorithmic advice to optimize their decision making. This study aims to investigate the effects of receiving algorithmic advice on individuals' attribution of responsibility for their achievements. The study is based on an experiment with a 2 x 5 design of two dimensions: achievement (success vs. failure) and advice (no advice; human-based advice with high and low expertise; and algorithmic advice with high and low accuracy). The findings from a pilot study suggest that the experimental design is largely appropriate, given that we found answers to our hypotheses. This short paper provides valuable insights for future research on the attribution of responsibility for success and failure when receiving algorithmic advice. Collapse

To advance our understanding of the role of data in such contemporary data-rich service ecosystems, we draw on the service-dominant (S-D) logic and data ecosystem literature. Abstract: Innovating in the digital age has important implications for most firms. This study explores why and how a manufacturing small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) comes to innovate through a service IT-based project. To do so, the research question is: how is a digital servitization process enacted in an established manufacturing SME? Mobilizing the business model canvas as an analytical tool, we opt for an interpretive single case study in a context characterized by a long history of innovation. Specifically, we focus on the servitization phenomenon through the development of an Internet of things (IoT) platform. The main contributions of this study are twofold. For researchers, our results support a better understanding of how innovation may occur in the manufacturing sector when SMEs add services to their existing products. For practitioners, this paper opens new ways of talking about innovation, notably concerning strategic IT value creation in the digital age. Collapse

Abstract: Adopting a capability-based view of digital transformation as a 2nd-order ‘dynamic’ capability, this paper investigates how 1st-order dynamic and operational IT capabilities are strategically configured and aligned by manufacturing SMEs in order to gain organizational agility. Resulting from a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) of 67 Canadian SMEs, our results show that a high level of organizational agility is concretized when these firms align at least three dynamic IT capabilities and one operational IT capability. Through three high-performing configurations composed of the sensing, learning, coordinating and integrating dynamic IT capabilities along with the IT management capability and e-business capability, we demonstrate which capabilities are present to achieve a high level of organizational agility, and under what environmental condition they manifest themselves. Providing a richer description and deeper understanding of the interrelationships between the IT capabilities required by manufacturing SMEs’ digital transformation, our contributions are both practical and theoretical.
