Abstract: Information systems scholars have been inferring data as ontologically unstable and epistemilogically uncertain and mobile. Data have been conceptualized as distinctive from digital technologies and possessing properties to relate with other data, digital technologies, actors and socio-political environments. Across such relations, data stabilize into larger objects, but also change as part of actors' value-creation processes. However, data have been predominantly understood as open-ended, and the ability of data to simultaneously acquire structures and change has not been sufficiently explored -this requires an ontological investigation. The research question this paper seeks to address is "how can data, understood as both process and structure, be ontologically accounted for?". The paper offers two contributions. First, it unpacks the process ontology of assemblage theory to account for data as dualities of structure and change. Second, it provides an understanding of data as irreversible historical productions which simultaneously engage in enduring and changing processes. Collapse

Abstract: Although smart product-service systems (SPSS) have attracted increasing interest from manufacturers in recent years, their commercialization can pose major challenges. This study aims to advance the SPSS literature by examining the pillars of manufacturers' SPSS value offering strategies. Using a sociotechnical perspective and a configurational approach, this study examines how manufacturers configure SPSS value offerings. A fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis based on data from a qualitative study reveals three different configurations of sociotechnical factors that are consistently sufficient to achieve an attractive SPSS value offering. From a theoretical perspective, insight into these configurations advances the understanding of complementarities among sociotechnical factors for SPSS. From a managerial perspective, the configurations provide templates for evaluating existing organizational work systems as well as design options for developing new ones. Collapse

Abstract: In the ever-evolving area of digital transformation, following responsible and sustainable practices is essential. This editorial article discusses the importance of responsible digital transformation, emphasizing the need for academia, private and public organizations, civil society, and individuals to work together in developing digital business models that generate shared value while addressing societal challenges. The article highlights the emergence of corporate digital responsibility (CDR) and the shift from industry 4.0 to industry 5.0, which focuses on human-centric approaches and human-AI partnerships. Furthermore, it underscores the need for interdisciplinary research and systematic approaches encompassing various dimensions of sustainability. By integrating sustainable ICT principles into digital transformation initiatives, organizations can contribute to a more sustainable and responsible digital future. Abstract: In this paper, we focus on the early-stage diffusion of codependent IT innovations, which are a type of innovation in which the overall innovation consists of two complementary parts that are adopted by two different adopter communities but where both parts need to be jointly adopted by the two coadopter communities for successful diffusion of the overall innovation. Using innovation diffusion, organizing vision (OV), and institutional entrepreneurship theories as the key theoretical lenses, and an in-depth case study reconstructed using 20 years of discourse surrounding Walmart’s campaign in the early stage of diffusion of the RFID-in-retailing technology, we develop a fourphase process model for the early-stage diffusion of codependent IT innovations. We make three specific contributions to the IS discipline, specifically to the literature on IS innovation adoption and diffusion. First, we add the notion of coadopter relative advantage and posit that the organization in the coadopter community with a higher coadopter relative advantage that perceives the highest degree of coadopter relative advantage will emerge as an institutional entrepreneur (IE) and will influence the early-stage diffusion of the codependent IT innovation. Second, we add the notion of an internal-external influencer and posit that the IE may be an actor who is internal to the overall adoption phenomenon, which involves two different coadopter communities, but external to the coadopter community with a lower coadopter relative advantage that adopts the innovation component. Third, we divide the early-stage diffusion process into four phases—emergence, structuralization, evolution, and chasm—and identify the institutional entrepreneurship strategies used and the OV functions enacted by the IE during each phase. We propose that the IE for a codependent innovation will: (1) use the rationale development strategy and enact the interpretation OV function during the emergence phase, (2) use the resource mobilization strategy and enact the mobilization OV function during the structuralization phase, (3) use the relationship development strategy and enact the legitimation OV function during the evolution phase, and (4) use all the three institutional entrepreneurship strategies and enact all the three OV functions during the chasm phase. Abstract: Employer review sites have grown popular over the last few years, with 86 percent of job seekers referring to reviews on these sites before applying to job positions. Though the antecedents of review helpfulness have been studied in various contexts, it has received limited attention in the employee review context. These sites provide review text in multiple dimensions, such as pros and cons. Besides, to solicit unbiased reviews, these sites allow an option of keeping reviewer information anonymous. Rooted in the diagnosticity perspective, we investigate review helpfulness focusing on the role of review text in multiple dimensions and the anonymity of the reviewers. We use a publicly available Glassdoor dataset to model review helpfulness using a Tobit regression. The results show that the review length in multiple dimensions of review text and anonymity positively impact review helpfulness. Moreover, anonymity positively moderates the review length in the cons section. As a post-hoc analysis, we perform topic modeling to gain better insights on the review text in multiple dimensions and anonymity. The post-hoc analyses show that non-anonymous reviewers discuss firm reputation in the pros section, which anonymous reviewers do not. In the cons section, non-anonymous reviewers discuss politics, unfair and unethical treatment, and prospects of the employer, while anonymous reviewers discuss incompetency of the leadership. This research has important practical implications for online review sites’ design and crafting guidelines and policies for employees writing reviews. Collapse

Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) drives transformation across medical specialities, requiring current and future generations of physicians to navigate everchanging digital environments. In this context, prospective physicians will play a key role in adopting and applying AI-based health technologies, underlining the importance of understanding their knowledge, attitudes, and intentions toward AI. To dissociate corresponding profiles, we adopted a configurational perspective and conducted a two-stage survey study of 184 ( 0 ) and 138 ( 1 ) medical students at a Canadian medical school. Our principal findings corroborate the existence of distinct clusters in respondents' AI profiles. We refer to these profiles as the AI unfamiliar, the AI educated, and the AI positive, showing that each profile is associated with different intentions towards future AI use. These exploratory insights on the variety of AI profiles in prospective physicians underline the need for targeted and adaptive measures of education and outreach. Collapse

Abstract: Blockchain technologies, specifically those related to cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens (NFTs), have recently garnered significant public interest. Blockchain has been lauded as potentially transformative across various industries, including decentralized finance, supply chain management, healthcare, file storage, and more. However, it has also been the source of much investor angst, evidenced by numerous media headlines reporting instances of fraud and catastrophic asset losses. In this paper, we examine whether the current incarnations of blockchain technologies provide a well-functioning market to its participants. We apply Roth’s market design framework to evaluate whether blockchain marketplaces provide safety, thickness, low congestion, and low repugnance. We find that blockchain applications in their current state do not represent a well-functioning market. We conclude by suggesting additional research avenues and explore whether they can still provide value to organizations even in their suboptimal market state. Collapse

Abstract: Research to date offers inconclusive and even conflicting evidence regarding whether organizations learn from failure. The present study sheds new light on this debate by highlighting a previously overlooked factor: whether the failure was caused by human error. In attempts to learn from failure, organizational members tend to focus on simplified representations of experiences and, in doing so, distinguish between failures attributed to human errors versus other causes. Our core thesis is that failures resulting from human error attract significant amounts of attentional resources, thereby depleting the limited stock of organizational attention otherwise directed at managing the risk of failures resulting from other causes. We hypothesize that this disproportionate allocation of attention simultaneously is associated with both positive learning outcomes and negative side effects, specifically, a subsequent decrease in failures resulting from human error and also an increase in failures resulting from other causes. We also hypothesize that failures resulting from causes other than human error attract less organizational attention and, thus, lead to weaker learning outcomes. The proposed hypotheses were tested and supported using data from accident reports filed by natural gas pipeline operators with the U.S. Pipeline Hazardous Materials Safety Administration from 2002 to 2012. Additional analyses, including text analysis of accident reports, a series of simulations, and a supplementary study, point to organizational attention as the mechanism at play. Taken together, these findings suggest that organizational learning from failure caused by human error produces not only benefits, but also unintended consequences. Collapse

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic forced organizations, including higher education institutions, to rapidly adjust their operations. In the face of the pandemic, most higher education institutions shut down their campuses and transitioned to emergency remote teaching mode. This study examines digital resilience in higher education institutions through the conceptual lens of disaster response management, by assessing the role played by the centralized governance of information technology (IT) investments. We posit that centralized IT helps organizations maintain customer satisfaction with services during a crisis (e.g., student satisfaction with classes during COVID-19) by facilitating the organization-wide transition to an emergency operational mode and supporting its service operations. Consolidating data on IT investment, governance, and course evaluations from 463 U.S. higher education institutions from 2017-2020, we show that centralized IT helped organizations adapt better to the pandemic in terms of maintaining student satisfaction. Moreover, we found that centralized IT investments geared toward facilitating organizational coordination and providing instructional and technical support played a pivotal role in enabling ERT and improving student ratings during the crisis. These results are corroborated by interviews with CIOs of U.S. higher education institutions. Additional analyses also suggest that the effectiveness of centralized IT governance is contingent upon organizational size, dissimilarity of local units, and the strategic role of the CIO. We also discuss theoretical extensions toward digital resilience as well as practical implications. Collapse

Abstract: In this study, we developed and tested a theoretical model to understand online music piracy behavior via email and instant messaging. We developed this theoretical model by drawing on a comprehensive literature review on music piracy, theory of reasoned action, social identity, and the deterrence theory. We collected primary data to test the hypotheses, and the results from the partial least squares analyses suggest attitude toward music file-sharing behavior and social identity positively affect intention to pirate music, whereas the perceived severity and certainty of punishment do not have significant effects on the attitude. The findings highlight the important role of social identity when a theoretical model with the concept explains music file-sharing behavior without monetary benefits in return. Collapse
