Abstract: In this paper we aim to improve our understanding of the dynamics of IS architecture complexity (i.e, the change in this complexity over time) during the execution of a consolidation IS integration strategy (IIS). Based on two case studies, we find that unexpected levels of complexity emerge during IIS execution because of an underestimation of requisite complexity and an overestimation of the potential to reduce complexity. Our analysis shows that increased complexity is due to the fact that the intended consolidation IIS is only partially executed, and to increasingly emergent IIS execution. Additionally, we find that while complexity was reduced at the portfolio level, at more detailed levels of observation complexity was actually increased. Our paper contributes to knowledge in the field by providing a deeper insight into IS architecture complexity dynamics during the execution of a consolidation IIS, and the concept of IS architecture complexity in general. Abstract: Understanding the factors that can explain innovation has received a lot of attention among researchers in the last decades. During the same period, different approaches to innovation have also seen the light of day, among them employee-driven innovation and digital innovation. In this study our aim is to look at a concept that merges these two types of innovation and see how motivation affects employee-driven digital innovation. In our research model we look at how intrinsic, social, and internalized extrinsic motivation affects employee-driven digital innovation, and how variables like strategy and organizational culture can act as explanatory and moderating variables. Abstract: The popularity and use of cloud computing has largely been driven by the reported benefits on firm performance. Despite this technology providing a paradigm shift in information technology (IT) services, the process through which the adoption of cloud computing effects organizational performance in the context of developing countries is still unclear. The aim of this study is to provide a theoretical discussion that advances our understanding about the mediating and moderating roles of organizational mindfulness in the context of cloud computing adoption and organizational performance. A research model is developed and tested using structural equation modelling. A firm level cross sectional survey was conducted on a sample of 180 organizations in the financial, manufacturing and IT sectors in Kenya. The findings reveal that organizations need to systematically develop mindfulness capabilities to benefit from the adoption of cloud, and IT innovations in general. Abstract: Digitalisation is imposing a strong pace of change on the business ecosystem, which implies the need for an adaptive governance model that moves away from the mechanistic approach of Command & Control. In this sense, we have considered complexity thinking and sociotechnical systems design as the key elements for designing such a governance model. Using an action-research approach with international Spanish organisations, we have developed a governance model based on Agile Portfolio Management. Our conclusions show that it is possible to use this approach to create an adaptive governance model, which allows to take on business transformation initiatives, regardless of their level of complexity. Abstract: Gender is essential to our identity. As information and communications technology (ICT) permeates every aspect of everyday life, a body of literature has emerged that broadens our understanding of IT and gender. A growing number of studies have shed light on the implications of ICT for gender and sexual minority populations in various areas. Gender and sexual minorities commonly referred to as LGBT consist of people whose gender identity diverges from predominant conceptions of masculinity and femininity or whose sexual orientation differs from the majority. Previous literature reviews on IT and gender have focused on the underrepresentation of women in the IT landscape. This paper presents the preliminary results of a literature review focusing on gender and sexual minorities and ICT. This paper contributes to the IS literature on gender by providing a foundation for ideas on ICT's role in mitigating the stigma associated with gender and sexual minority status. Abstract: Because our minds frequently drift away, an investigation into mind wandering while using information technology (IT) is critical. Despite growing interest in mind-wandering episodes in various domains, the discipline of Information Systems (IS) still lacks a validated measurement instrument that can account for the technology-related facets of the phenomenon. Our work addresses this gap and presents the results of a comprehensively developed scale that is specifically designed for IS scenarios. Using existing literature and the results of a pilot study (N = 35), a field study (N = 364), and a cross-validation sample (N = 336), we developed a new instrument that allows mind wandering while using technology to be measured either as a state (MWS) or as a trait with two subtypes (MWT-D: deliberate, and MWT-S: spontaneous). Whereas MWS captures a momentary mental state or a sequence of mental states that arise relatively freely while using technology in a given moment, MWT-D and MWT-S capture either intentional or unintentional, internally focused thoughts in technology-related settings in everyday life. Our scale is well suited to support future research to investigate the effects of mind wandering in technology-related settings and to study its implications for IS-relevant dependent variables, such as task performance and creativity. Abstract: The charity sector is trust-intensive as its performance depends on people's willingness to donate and their confidence that donations will be used appropriately. However, recurring scandals continue to erode public trust. Charities are, therefore, increasingly turning to new technologies such as blockchain to increase their accountability and the transparency of donation use and allocation. While studies either develop concepts for the design of blockchain-based donation systems or examine the effects on donors' behavior, this paper focuses on emerging opportunities for charities. Using a systemic review, three types of blockchain uses, their interplay in the charity sector, and seven affordances are presented that enable charities to build trust through, among others, increased accountability and automated governance. We thereby contribute to a deeper understanding of the impact of blockchain on the charity sector by highlighting the action potential of actors in the sector and its effect on trust on the donors' side. Abstract: The adoption of big data technologies presents organisations with many value creation opportunities that can transform and improve their business. Much of the research today focuses on big data value creation (what value big data technologies offer), whereas limited research focuses on big data value realisation (how big data value is realized).We aim to fill this research gap by addressing the following research question: how do organisations effectively realize value from the adoption of a new big data technology? We do so by adopting an affordance theory lens and empirically examine the adoption of smart meters (a big data technology) in the UK energy sector. We introduce the concept of actualization enablers, and our findings provide empirically grounded insights into the role of organisational capabilities and actualization enablers in the big data value realization process (affordance actualization). Abstract: While it is widely recognized that weather impacts the power flow, historically weather information has only been implicitly included. This paper presents an approach for the direct inclusion of weather information in the power flow. Key issues addressed by the paper include the availability of weather information, the mapping of weather information to electric grid components, a flexible and extensible modeling approach for relating weather values to the power flow models, and the visualization of the weather impacts. The approach is demonstrated on several electric grids ranging in size from 7000 to 82,000 buses using weather data over several different years. Collapse
