Abstract: This paper examines how personal investment influence the use of multi-factor authentication (MFA) for securing online accounts. We draw from the Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) that accounts for intrapersonal factors that increase one’s understanding of their threat and coping mechanisms and, subsequently, their motivation to protect such investments. We integrate size of investment – the amount of time, effort, and other personal resources that an individual has put into their online account. Based on PMT’s framework, we develop a research model that examines the influence of investment size as an information source that initiates and builds threat and coping appraisals. The model is tested with a survey of 263 responses, and the result shows that investment size influences threat and coping appraisals, which in turn increases MFA protection motivation and use. These results highlight the importance of eliciting individuals’ personal investments in order to improve their protective security behaviors. Collapse

Abstract: Although social media has helped online newspapers by allowing users to organically share articles, some have argued that it has cannibalized and hurt newspapers through reduced readership and diminished agenda-setting power. Motivated by these two opposing effects, it is critical to understand what affects the duality between sharing news articles on social media and reading the articles on news websites. Using rich clickstream data on online news readership obtained from an English-language newspaper in an Asian country and social media data collected from Twitter, we focus on article sentiment as a key news content attribute and find a differential effect of sentiment on readership and sharing behaviors across the news site and third-party social media platform. Our results show that people are likely to read news articles with negative sentiment on the news site, but they tend to share articles with positive sentiment on Twitter. Specifically, a one-unit increase in content sentiment is associated with a 10.86% or 273-unit decrease in news site page views but a 17.0% or 2.10-unit increase in Twitter sharing volume. Upon decomposition of news article sentiment, we also find a contrasting positive author sentiment effect and a negative news topic valence effect on news readership. To uncover the underlying mechanism of the findings, we test the key intuitions from prior self-presentation literature. We find that an increase in a Twitter user’s followers (i.e., audience size) leads to an increase in the Twitter user’s propensity to share positive-sentiment news articles. Our findings on the role of sentiment on content consumption and sharing affirm the coopetitive but complementary relationship between news websites and social media platforms. Abstract: The advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) has not only improved people’s quality of life but also raised concerns about information privacy. Although several studies have been conducted regarding information privacy concerns, there has not been sufficient discussion of the information privacy trade-off behavior in the IoT environment. Because previous studies only indirectly measured the information privacy trade-off behavior, the understanding of the behavior itself or its cause is limited. To address this issue, this study explored information privacy trade-off behavior in more depth using a large-scale sample and two-step analysis. Both panel data (23,724 samples for three years) and cross-sectional data (350 samples) were used in the analysis. The analysis results confirmed the existence of the information privacy trade-off for IoT users. Furthermore, it was found that the trade-off is associated with the social value of IoT devices and that men with IoT experience predominantly have strong trade-off behavior. Collapse

Abstract: As the demand for data-driven decision making continues to rise, data science education (DSE) is becoming more and more crucial. The primary aim of the study was to understand how DSE may be scaled to nonscience participants, particularly using immersive DSE training sessions that culminated in a datathon (data science hackathon). The immersion programme was based on a project-based pedagogy informed by the CRoss Industry Standard Process for Data Mining (CRISP-DM) to integrate data science's multidisciplinary nature. Quantitative research was used with 107 datathon participants. Using various statistical measures including Exploratory Factor Analysis, the key results revealed that non-science participants who completed the immersions and datathon were sufficiently knowledgeable in all the CRISP-DM components as well as those who attended the full DSE programme. This means data science skills can be attained by non-STEM individuals by spending focused time in immersions on a specific data science concept. In this case, immersion sped up learning as the participants picked up new data science concepts while applying them simultaneously. The study recommends immersions through datathons to encourage transdisciplinary collaborative learning to massify data science skills. Collapse

Abstract: Algorithmic management can create work environment tensions that are detrimental to workplace well-being and productivity. One specific type of tension originates from the fact that algorithms often exhibit limited transparency and are perceived as highly opaque, which impedes workers’ understanding of their inner workings. While algorithmic transparency can facilitate sensemaking, the algorithm’s opaqueness may aggravate sensemaking. By conducting an empirical case study in the context of the Uber platform, we explore how platform workers make sense of the algorithms managing them. Drawing on Weick’s enactment theory, we theorize a new form of sensemaking—algorithm sensemaking—and unpack its three sub-elements: (1) focused enactment, (2) selection modes, and (3) retention sources. The sophisticated, multistep process of algorithm sensemaking allows platform workers to keep up with algorithmic instructions systematically. We add to previous literature by theorizing algorithm sensemaking as a mediator linking workers’ perceptions about tensions in their work environment and their behavioral responses. Collapse

This has led to strong connection habits that, paired with the boundless nature of the smartphone, have increased the possibilities of being exposed to distracting (auditory) cues triggering smartphone related habits. In this study we investigate whether digital (sound) distractions were more distracting compared to non-digital (sound) distractions as a result of smartphones being highly prevalent in our society and how a local distraction effect might impact overall task performance. We found that digital distractions did have a local distraction effect, but these local distractions did not amount to any significant group differences in terms of overall task performance. Although, it was found that individuals exposed to digital distractions reported increased perceived mental effort, -task difficulty, -subjective distraction and reduced perceived attention paid to the task compared to the nondigital and control groups. Abstract: The food production sector is one of the largest industries globally, yet it is confronted with significant challenges. While food tech startups are viewed as a promising means of addressing some of these obstacles, they frequently encounter the issue of being highly research-intensive and risky investments. In this project, we pose the following question: How can we effectively design investment vehicles and strategies to support food tech startups? To address this question, we undertook an exploration design science research project. In collaboration with a corporate venture fund, we initially explored opportunities and subsequently developed a solution design for one of the most promising prospects. This study contributes to the body of design knowledge in three primary ways. Firstly, it contributes by providing a situated artifact that outlines the design of a closed-ended deep science food tech fund engaged in production and input supply. Secondly, it contributes by establishing design principles for investment vehicles and strategies in ventures that are highly research-intensive and risky. Lastly, this study makes a methodological contribution by showcasing how a methodology for addressing exploration design science projects could look like. Collapse

Besides well-researched approaches like software development, outsourcing, or customizing commercial software packages, low-code platforms today offer a new approach for creating software. The low-code approach allows to develop software without or with limited actual coding by combining executable software components into workflows. While the low-code approach simplifies software development and reduces effort and time, we lack explanations on why organizations adopt it, and which challenges are associated with its adoption. We, therefore, investigate the adoption of the low-code approach based on the technology-organization-environment framework. We identified ten aspects supporting and six aspects hindering the adoption of the low-code approach.
