Abstract: Cyber-attacks can cause severe economic damages to businesses today. Therefore, every company needs to protect its IT systems from such attacks by implementing effective IT security measures. When it comes to deciding on an IT security measure, there is a variety of decision approaches that can offer support on choosing an economically reasonable one. In practice, however, such approaches are rarely applied and a company's security investment decisions are often based on intuitive factors. We therefore want to explore which factors drive the acceptance and application of economic approaches on IT security investment decisions. For this, we used semi-structured interviews and a moderated focus group to generate insights from both science and practice. Not only did our research yield new scientific knowledge about IT security investment decisions, but the results can also be useful in increasing the application of economic decision approaches. Abstract: Employees with a proactive personality tend to show exceptional initiative and perseverance, suggesting that they are relatively impervious to stressors. Yet some evidence suggests that proactive personality may exacerbate the effect of stressors on strain. In this study, we clarify these conflicting ideas by systematically distinguishing between different types of chronic work stressors. Integrating the conservation-of-resources model and the challenge–hindrance stressor framework, we suggest that employees with more proactive personalities are especially sensitive to the extent to which chronic work stressors are amenable to their resource investments. Specifically, we hypothesize that, for more proactive employees, challenge stressors (opportunities more amenable to resource investment) lead to less strain (i.e., emotional exhaustion and turnover intentions) but also that hindrance stressors (demands less amenable to proactive expectations of achievement) lead to relatively more strain. We further propose perceived organizational support as a mediator of these interactive effects wherein challenging opportunities are interpreted by proactive employees as particularly indicative of high support and hindering demands as particularly indicative of low support, ultimately leading to lower and higher perceptions of strain, respectively. A three-wave survey of 256 architects generally supports these hypotheses: the effects of challenge stressors on emotional exhaustion and turnover intentions were significantly attenuated and the effects of hindrance stressors on these outcomes were significantly exacerbated for more proactive people. These effects were mediated (partially for exhaustion, fully for turnover intentions) by perceived support. Follow-up analysis demonstrates that this interactive effect extends to turnover behavior 2.5 years later, fully mediated by perceived support. Collapse

Abstract: Recent events have renewed attention to how organizations rely on digital resources in response to exogenous shock. Though the literature on organizational resilience indicates that this is best understood as a process through which organizational actors respond to a specific shock, most IS research attends to resilience as an outcome. Against that backdrop, we present a case study of how a university shifted to virtual teaching in response to a government-imposed lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic. Adopting a digital resourcing perspective allowed us to reveal the organizational resilience process and the way digital resources shaped it. We found that the resilience process unfolded in stages as educators, assisted by students, managers, and IT personnel pivoted, adapted, and normalized into teaching virtually. Across these stages, digital resources took on specific roles as the resilience process progressed from the organization’s pre-shock accumulation of digital resources into its continued digitalization efforts. Based on these findings, we contribute to existing literature by advancing and empirically substantiating a process view of the role of digital resources in organizational resilience. Collapse

Abstract: The integration of external data offers enormous potential for new and expanded value propositions for companies. Despite this potential, organizations often hesitate to share data due to the anticipated negative consequences. This study delves into the decision-making process of organizations regarding data sharing within an ecosystem and explores strategies to motivate other organizations to share data. By combining privacy calculus and ecosystems theory, we employ a qualitative case study approach to examine the German orthopedic market. Our findings reveal three risks (weakening one's position in the ecosystem, IT alignment investments, and penalties for data protection violations) and three benefits (increased value creation for the ecosystem, competitive advantage over other ecosystems, and gaining additional transactions) that organizations perceive when contemplating data sharing. Moreover, we identify three strategies for obtaining data from other organizations: mitigating the risks, emphasizing the benefits, and bypassing the calculus. Collapse

Abstract: Interorganizational data sharing (IODS) grows increasingly complex in the context of business ecosystems. As the literature on IODS finds that organizations only share data if they perceive benefits from it, this study explores value appropriation strategies (VAS) through an ongoing inductive case study of the German orthopedic ecosystem, exploiting interview and secondary data from executives of various treatment facilities and a leading manufacturer of health products. Our preliminary grounded theorizing indicates that VAS for IODS involve four elements (partner selection, data tailoring, reciprocal design, and control enforcement) that each are realized by specific VAS activities. Further, we find that, different from other contexts, ensuring VAS for IODS is not about controlling the value creation process but is grounded in upstream strategic decisions. This understanding of VAS for IODS indicates that having strategies for value appropriation in place before diving into IODS is crucial for succeeding in data ecosystems. Collapse

Abstract: Location data rapidly grow with fast-changing logistics and business rules. Due to fast-growing business ventures and their diverse operations locally and globally, location-based information systems are in demand in resource industries. Data sources in these industries are spatial-temporal, with petabytes in size. Managing volumes and various data in periodic and geographic dimensions using the existing modelling methods is challenging. The current relational database models have implementation challenges, including the interpretation of data views. Multidimensional models are articulated to integrate resource databases with spatial-temporal attribute dimensions. Location and periodic attribute dimensions are incorporated into various schemas to minimise ambiguity during database operations, ensuring resource data's uniqueness and monotonic characteristics. We develop an integrated framework compatible with the multidimensional repository and implement its metadata in resource industries. The resources’ metadata with spatial-temporal attributes enables business research analysts a scope for data views’ interpretation in new geospatial knowledge domains for financial decision support. Abstract: Green information systems (green IS) have evolved and expanded over the years, now having a broad scope in organizations. Green IS in these organizations function to help to address climate change challenges. The growing complexity of green IS in organizations needs a conceptual framework that can articulate its different impacts at various levels while taking into consideration a holistic and integrated perspective. This research focuses on how to enhance and ensure green IS-driven green performance in organizations from an operant resources hierarchy perspective. A conceptual model is proposed to examine the role of management support for green initiatives and the role of information assurance in addressing IS misuse and process automation in relationship to green IS capability and green performance. The current study tests the effects of management support as composite operant resources and information assurance as interconnected operant resources for green IS capability in enhancing and ensuring organizations' green performance using a matched dataset of 73 organizations. We illustrate the application of the proposed conceptual model in two real-world scenarios. This study contributes theoretically by illustrating the application of the operant resources hierarchy perspective in green IS research and provides practical action suggestions for organizations adopting sustainable practices to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13. Abstract: Although change initiatives are a frequent and critical need in contemporary organizations, an individual's propensity to resist change is frequently reported. Resistance is the consequence of the cognitive and behavioral responses of people affected by the change. This phenomenon has the potential to change the current status quo of many individual and group-level theories, particularly those addressing the "why" and "how" of resistance to change. This study uses an interpretive research approach with the use of the grounded theory method and adopts the SQB theory to observe the resistance to change in response to SQB emergence. This study employs four focus group discussions that yield a framework to understand the emergence of SQB. The study identifies an inter-play among SQB emergence framework constructs: actor, entity and time. This study assists in identifying new frameworks and paradigms for the SQB perspective that can be used in changing conditions. Collapse

Abstract: Researchers and practitioners are increasingly interested in understanding how organizations transform their value propositions and practices using digital technologies. While the extant literature offers important empirical and theoretical insights into digital transformation in individual organizations, we know little about how adopting organizations within an organizational field react differently over time to the same digital transformation initiative. This is unfortunate, as such insights could help scholars and managers understand option repertoires and constraints in handling digital transformation ideas that travel into organizations. Against this backdrop, we had access to a unique case over an eighteen-year period, which shows how organizations within the Danish home care field reacted differently to a nationwide digital transformation initiative on mobile technology use. To analyze this case, we applied virus theory as a promising perspective for examining how and why the same digital technology and transformation idea occasions different reactions in similar contexts. Our analysis highlights the emerging, fluctuating, and consequential nature of digital transformation within the Danish home care field, which has led to very different reactions across adopting organizations. Drawing on this analysis, we contribute to the expanding literature on digital transformation by providing theoretical and practical knowledge about variations regarding how organizations within an organizational field react over time to digital transformation ideas.
