Abstract: Given the strategic importance of digital transformation, IS research pays meticulous attention to identifying its key drivers, including awareness, motivation, and capability. Nevertheless, the interaction and synergy among these drivers remain conceptually and empirically understudied. Our study tries to address this research gap. We first consider digital proactiveness as awareness, change commitment as motivation, and organizational flexi­ bility as the capability driver of digital transformation. Drawing on systems theory, this study proposes the synergy of these three key drivers in steering digital transformation. Recent data from 206 Dutch firms support the existence of synergy, showing that digital proactiveness, change commitment, and organizational flexibility contribute jointly to digital transformation. Our analysis reveals that the effect of organizational flexibility on digital transformation is highest when digital proactiveness and change commitment are both at a high level. This study extends our understanding of the complementary and synergistic digital transformation drivers and broadens research in this tradition by considering the synergy of awareness, motivational, and capability drivers in driving digital transformation. Abstract: With the advancement of online technologies in recent years, crowdsourcing data has been used for numerous applications in many fields. The preference sequences obtained through crowdsourcing are valuable resources for ranking. However, the aggregation of incomplete and inconsistent preferences is complicated. To address these challenges, this study proposed a novel method termed robust crowd ranking (RCR) based on a consistent fuzzy c-means approach to increase the robustness and accessibility of aggregated preference sequences obtained through crowdsourcing. To verify the robustness, accessibility, and accuracy of RCR, comprehensive experiments were conducted using synthetic and real data. The simulation results validated that the RCR outperforms Borda Count, Dodgson, IRV and Tideman methods. Collapse

Abstract: The rise of the digital society is accompanied by incalculable social risks, but very little IS research has examined the implications of the new digital society. Drawing on concepts from Beck’s critical theory of the risk society and critical discourse analysis, this study examines the public discourse on risk events during the launch of NemID, a personal digital identifier for Danish citizens. This research illustrates our difficulties and challenges in managing some of the fundamental social risks from societal digitalisation. Limited institutional capabilities for digital technologies force public officials to depend on private companies motived by profit instead of the public interest. Beliefs in digital technology as the primary determinant of social and economic progress also present many public management dilemmas. When digital risk events occur and citizens’ fears are stoked by news media and public discourse, public officials seem to have no other strategy for managing the escalating fears than systematically distorted communication. The continued rise of the digital risk society demands that IS research respond to the challenge of generating knowledge for its public management. Collapse

Abstract: Tertius iungens brokering that brings together people who might not otherwise meet is crucial for organizational effectiveness. But we know little about whether and why women and men differ in their propensity to engage in this brokering. Our paper focuses on the origins and mitigation of gender differences in the propensity to bring people together. In study 1, we showed that the Totterdell et al. (2008) propensity-to-join-others scale that we used in study 2 and the Obstfeld (2005) tertius iungens scale overlapped not only conceptually, but also empirically, and that these measures of tertius iungens were distinct from mediation- and separation-brokering propensities (Grosser et al. 2019). In study 2, we used a natural experiment to examine the tertius iungens brokering propensities of 876 identical and 625 fraternal same-sex twins. We found that brokering propensity was lower for women than for men, although the propensity toward sociability in terms of making friends and acquaintances was lower for men. We also found that for women, relative to men, tertius iungens brokering propensity was largely affected by environmental influences, such as the experience of stereotyping and discrimination, rather than representing an inherited disposition. Moreover, the differences between men and women with respect to brokering were mitigated for empowered samples, such as well-educated or entrepreneurial individuals. Our research asks new questions about how environmental pressures and empowerment affect social networking. Gender differences in brokering may be amenable to mitigation through empowering practices that include education and entrepreneurial experience. Collapse

Abstract: This paper reflects on what differentiates AI ethics issues from concerns raised by all IS applications. AI ethics issues can be viewed in three distinct categories. One can view AI as another IS application like any other. We examine this category of AI applications focusing primarily on Mason’s (MIS Quarterly, 10, 5–12, 1986) PAPA framework as a way to position AI ethics within the IS domain. One can also view AI as adding a generative capacity producing outputs that cannot be pre-determined from inputs and code. We examine this by adding “inference” to the informational pyramid and exploring its implications. AI can also be viewed as a basis for reexamining questions of the nature of mental phenomena such as reasoning and imagination. At this time, AI-based systems seem far from replicating or replacing human capabilities. However, if/when such abilities emerge as computing machinery continues growing in capacity and capability, it will be helpful to have anticipated arising ethical issues and developed plans for avoiding, detecting, and resolving them to the extent possible.
