Abstract: Virtual Reality (VR) is becoming an increasingly important technology in a host of industries, including tourism. VR can provide virtual experiences before, during, or in lieu of real-world visits to tourism sites. Hence, providing authentic experiences is essential to satisfy guests with the site and technology. This study analyzes survey data using PLS to identify the determinants of satisfaction with non-immersive VR experiences of heritage and non-heritage tourism sites. Results from 193 subjects reveal the linkages between system quality, object-related authenticity, activity-related authenticity, and presence, as well their relationship with satisfaction. Collapse

Abstract: The growth of social media has enabled new operating methods and sparked organizational optimism in social technologies. We must broadly and distinctively identify the practices enacted in the organizational use of social technologies, understand how these practices influence each other, and the mechanisms driving their achieve­ ment. This paper deduces the sociomaterial practices enacted in the organizational use of social media and the augmenting generative capabilities. We surveyed seventy-three (73) organizations, collected 267 usable re­ sponses and applied structural equation modelling (SEM) techniques to analyze the data. The paper offers two contributions. First, we utilize the affordances-in-practice perspective to identify and categorize organizational practices enacted on social media, including functional, symbolic, and interactive practices. Then, we highlight the role of organizational generativity in facilitating these practices. Generativity represents the ability to revitalize, procreate, and introduce new ways of acting in dynamic or transient situations. Overall, our findings show how social media practices relate to organizational generativity and the mediating role of symbolic-driven practices. Collapse

Abstract: The introduction of machine learning (ML), as the engine of many artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled systems in organizations, comes with the claim that ML models provide automated decisions or help domain experts improve their decision-making. Such a claim gives rise to the need to keep domain experts in the loop. Hence, data scientists, as those who develop ML models and infuse them with human intelligence during ML devel­ opment, interact with various ML stakeholders and reflect their views within ML models. This interaction comes with (often conflicting) demands from various ML stakeholders and potential tensions. Building on the theories of effective use and wise reasoning, this mixed method study proposes a model to better understand how data scientists can use wisdom for managing these tensions when they develop ML models. In Study 1, through interviewing 41 analytics and ML experts, we investigate the dimensions of wise reasoning in the context of ML development. In Study 2, we test the overall model using a sample of 249 data scientists. Our results confirm that to develop effective ML models, data scientists need to not only use ML systems effectively, but also practice wise reasoning in their interactions with domain experts. We discuss the implications of these findings for research and practice. Collapse

Abstract: Robo-advisors are a new type of FinTech increasingly used by millennials in place of traditional financial advice. Building on artificial intelligence, robo-advisors provide personalized asset and wealth management services. Their application and study have hitherto focused exclusively on individual advisory regarding asset management. We observe a pressing need to investigate roboadvisors' application for complex artificial intelligence based recommendation tasks both, in context of group decision-making and in contexts beyond asset management, due to robo-advisors' potential as a lever for integrating artificial intelligence in the entire decision-making process. Thus, we present a action design research in progress aimed at designing such a robo-advisor. More specifically, this study investigates whether and how robo-advisory promotes consensus-efficient group decision-making in new types of economic scenarios (after-sales). Based on a comprehensive problem formulation, we aim towards deriving a set of meta-requirements and design principles that are embodied in a preliminary prototypical instantiation of a robo-advisor. Abstract: This paper explores the optimal regulation strategies of the government and platforms to provide guidelines for how to maintain the order of user-generated content platforms and prevent adverse social events. The platform decides the intensity of regulation measures to be implemented on its content, and the government decides to enforce either direct or indirect regulation on platform content. The main result is that the platform’s regulation strategy depends on the relationship between the loss and fine caused by adverse social events and the cost to improve regulation intensity. We find that the optimal regulation strategy of the government depends largely on the potential probability occurrence of adverse social events and the efficiency of direct regulation. Competition prompts platforms to reduce regulation intensity, and counterintuitively, platform users can benefit from fierce competition. However, weak competition may result in lower consumer surplus in a duopoly market than in a monopoly market. In a duopoly market with greatly disparate intrinsic values of two platforms, the government can appropriately relax regulations. Collapse

In this paper, we investigate if this fragmentation can be mended with decentralized platform architectures. Abstracting from an exemplary case in the mobility-as-a-service sector, we model a competitive two-platform market with a centralized platform and decentralized alternative. We find that in markets with high envelopment costs, the co-existence of these platforms leads to market segmentation: Complementors with low market power join the centralized platform, while complementors with high market power join the decentralized platform. Furthermore, the existence of a decentralized alternative can increase welfare. Lastly, by considering data control aspects, we demonstrate the effect of favorable platform design on complementor decision-making. Collapse

Abstract: The proliferation of variable renewable energy increases the significance of reserve markets, which provide energy flexibility to compensate for supply–demand mismatches on short notice. Accordingly, market regulators in different locations have been continuously adopting different mechanisms to attract flexible sources, such as batteries to participate in reserve markets. While these mechanisms are different and sometimes contradictory, there is no consensus on their effectiveness. Therefore, there is a dire need to examine their effectiveness systematically. This paper proposes a model-driven decision support system, focusing on regulators’ perspectives, assisting them in evaluating the effectiveness of different market mechanisms for attracting batteries in reserve electricity markets. We formulate the problem as a stochastic Mixed-IntegerLinear-Program, incorporating practical restrictions and applicable to many electricity markets. As an example, we apply our model to the case of the German electricity market to evaluate some market mechanisms. We find that although some reserve markets do not allow separate bidding in charging and discharging directions (asymmetric bidding), this seems to be an effective mechanism to attract battery operators. When asymmetric bidding is allowed, battery operators often optimally choose to reserve their capacity only in the charging direction and use the discharging direction in energy markets, taking opposite seller/buyer roles in energy and reserve markets. Our results also advocate mechanisms such as remunerating the activated energy and shifting the gate closure closer to the time of operation. In contrast, some existing rewarding mechanisms designed for flexible resources do not seem to be very effective. Collapse

Abstract: Social media platforms facilitate the sharing of a vast magnitude of information in split seconds among users. However, some false information, generally referred to as "fake news", is also widely spread. This can have major negative impacts on individuals and societies. Unfortunately, people are often not able to correctly identify fake news from authentic news. Therefore, there is an urgent need to find effective mechanisms to fight fake news on social media. To this end, this paper adapts the Straub Model of Security Action Cycle to the context of combating fake news on social media. It uses the adapted framework to classify the vast literature on fake news into action cycle phases (i.e., deterrence, prevention, detection, and mitigation/remedy). Based on a systematic and inter-disciplinary review of the relevant literature, we analyze the status and the challenges in each stage of combating fake news, followed by introducing future research directions. These efforts allow the development of a holistic view of the research frontier on fighting fake news online. We conclude that this is a multidisciplinary issue, and as such, a collaborative effort from different fields is needed to effectively address this problem. Collapse

Abstract: Social protection systems, a target of the United Nation's (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), are intended to reduce extreme poverty, build human capital, and protect against risks to sustainable livelihoods and well-being. As social protection systems are by their nature inherently complex, multi-faceted, and socially embedded, it is inevitable that tensions will emerge between their design and implementation, representing design-reality gaps. These tensions present an excellent opportunity for cross-disciplinary research, by understanding how best to bridge these designreality gaps. In this qualitative, interpretivist case study, we situate our work on the ground with the actors involved in the design, implementation, and use of a social protection system in Zimbabwe. We find interaction failures amongst some users; design-reality gaps around network access and ICT policy implementation; as well as mixed views regarding transparency and accountability of ICT. Our findings provide rich insights from ICT users in the global south and underscore the importance of the co-creation of IS interventions together with communities to ensure technologies consider social, political, economic, and network realities. We conclude by providing directions for future research. Collapse

Abstract: Family-run SMEs usually have a long tradition. They have specified their organizational structures and processes to their product or service over the years. Now these companies are facing various difficulties, such as the increasing shortage of skilled workers or new competition from digital technologies. We argue that digital platforms can be a challenge as well as an opportunity. In our perception, however, German family-run SMEs show a restrained adoption of those technologies. This article therefore examines the barriers to the use of digital platforms in the value creation process of family businesses. For this purpose, we followed the approach of design-oriented information systems. We evaluated transcripts of eleven interviews with family-run SMEs and identified five categories as barriers to enter: Customer, Sociotechnical, Personal, Resources, and non-specific Others. Finally, in the discussion we mapped these barriers to actors we assume to be capable of tearing them down in the future. Collapse
