Abstract: This study examines how the mechanisms that entrepreneurs use to successfully mobilize financial resources influence the long-term viability of their ventures. Through an inductive analysis of crowdfunded consumer drone ventures, we empirically illustrate and theoretically conceptualize the link between the claims entrepreneurs use to mobilize resources and the actions entrepreneurs must then take to develop successful ventures. We induct a theoretical framework to suggest that unbounded claims drive up the financial resources that ventures mobilize but reduce the likelihood of their long-term viability because of unmanageable technological complexity and uncontrolled organizational scaling, whereas bounded claims limit the financial resources that ventures mobilize but increase the likelihood of their long-term viability because of manageable technological complexity and controlled organizational scaling. We contribute to the resource mobilization literature by expounding on how the mechanisms that entrepreneurs use to mobilize financial resources are critical for ventures’ long-term viability over and above the amount of resources they mobilize. We contribute to the cultural entrepreneurship literature by linking research on claim making to the actions entrepreneurs must then take to deliver on their claims. Finally, we contribute to the literature on crowdfunding by connecting entrepreneurs’ campaign actions to the postcampaign outcome of on-time and on-scope product delivery. Collapse

Abstract: This study examines the impact that the argumentative salience of technology frames of refer­ ences has on the execution of complex IS implementation projects. It employs Toulmin's argument model to develop argument maps that depict the structure of argumentation that took place during the development and implementation of an interorganizational health information ex­ change initiative (HIE) that took place in southeast USA. Toulmin's argument model faciliated the portrayal of frame salience in terms of three structural properties (i.e., blindness, indifference, and ownership). The study used these properties to show how the breadth, depth and conspicuity of frame structures changed during the course of the project and demonstrated how these changes impacted both the level of contestation observed in the project as well as project outcomes. In addition to lending insights that are specific to this case, our conceptualization of frame structure lends itself to cross-case comparisons and future theory building as the impact of these argument structures can be evaluated in a multitude of different contexts. Abstract: Privacy is one of the key challenges to the adoption and implementation of online proctoring systems (OPS) in higher education. To better understand this challenge, we adopt privacy as contextual integrity theory to conduct a scoping review of 17 papers. The results show different types of students' personal and sensitive information are collected and disseminated; this raises considerable privacy concerns. As well as the governing principles including transparency and fairness, consent and choice, information minimization, accountability, and information security and accuracy have been identified to address privacy problems. This study notifies a need to clarify how these principles should be implemented and sustained, and what privacy concerns and actors they relate to. Further, it calls for the need to clarify the responsibility of key actors in enacting and sustaining responsible adoption and use of OPS in higher education. Collapse

Abstract: The paper examines the accrual of technical debt, which represents an increasingly pressing concern for many organizations. To advance understanding of how this debt-accumulation process unfolds, an in-depth case study was conducted with a large manufacturing firm for identifying particular types of technical debt and potential interdependencies among them. The findings point to architecture debt being "the root of all evil" at the case company, setting in motion dynamics that led to the development of other types of technical debt. Scholarship should benefit from this nuanced articulation and illustration of interdependencies across the various types of technical debt. Collapse

Abstract: The development and increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly in high-risk application areas, calls for attention to the governance of AI systems. Organizations and researchers have proposed AI ethics principles, but translating principles into practice-oriented frameworks has proven difficult. This paper develops meta-requirements for organizational AI governance frameworks to help translate ethical AI principles into practice and align operations with the forthcoming European AI Act. We adopt a design science research approach. We put forward research-based premises, then we report the design method employed in an industry-academia research project. Based on these, we present seven metarequirements for AI governance frameworks. The paper contributes to the IS research on AI governance by collating knowledge into meta-requirements and advancing a design approach to AI governance. The study underscores that governance frameworks need to incorporate the characteristics of AI, its contexts, and the different sources of requirements.and Mäntymäki, 2021) and advancing the understanding of the components needed to translate AI ethics principles into AI governance (Laato, Tiainen, et al., 2022;Schneider et al., 2022). Our study draws on a DSR study conducted in a research project that included researchers and public and private organizations acting as design partners and domain experts. Thus, we take AI governance research forward from conceptual and exploratory studies into a design-based direction.The paper proceeds as follows. Section 2 presents the knowledge base, i.e., the streams of literature we build on to establish the research-based premises for developing meta-requirements. The third section describes our DSR approach. The fourth section outlines the meta-requirements. In the fifth section, we discuss the implications, limitations, and future research areas, and conclude the paper. Abstract: While blood products are a critical resource in healthcare systems, providing sufficient blood products is a worldwide challenge, especially so since the COVID-19 pandemic. As easy and timely access to information is crucial to convince (potential) donors to change their behaviour and become regular donors, chatbots can offer fast and easy access to information whenever (potential) donors need it. Due to their human-like design, chatbots can help motivating and convincing users to donate blood regularly to work against the ongoing, post-pandemic challenges in providing sufficient blood supply. Based on previous findings, we assume that users' perception of a blood donation chatbot can vary worldwide, in relation to the incorporated design features. As part of a design science study, we conducted an online between-subject experiment with participants from USA, Germany, South Africa and India. We could show a significant negative moderating effect of horizontal individualism in terms of the chatbot's individualistic conversation style and the perceived similarity in social group membership, implicating the so-called "contribution conflict" with regard to IS and culture. Abstract: Even though blood products cannot be produced artificially, but are important for many surgeries and treatments, less than 1 % of the population donates blood in countries like South Africa or Ghana. Therefore, efficient and successful blood donor mobilisation and management are important. We argue that a chatbot offers easy access to information for all types of donors and can support the transition of non-, first-time or lapsed donors to regular donors. By applying the design science research methodology, we have developed a chatbot for all donor types in South Africa and Ghana. We performed two design cycles, collaborating with experts from three blood services and grounding our research on existing and derived behavioural change models. The chatbot was positively evaluated in two workshops that included focus group discussions and online surveys. Collapse

Abstract: The two African countries South Africa and Ghana both suffer from low recruitment and retention of blood donors and daily face the challenge of matching supply and demand of blood products. When addressing this challenge, it is important to note that the blood donation cultures of both countries differ, with South Africa representing an individualist and Ghana a collectivist blood donation culture. In order to support donor management in both countries, we argue that blood donation apps can play an important role. By applying the design science methodology, we evaluate and analyse a set of previously defined design features with regard to their importance for a blood donation app in those two countries. By means of an online survey, we establish the overall usefulness of a blood donation app. We additionally conclude that for both countries personal and social features are important for the design, but that for South Africa personal features like reminders or rewards are even more important, while for Ghana social features dominate. In light of the great potential, it is often overlooked that advances in performance come at a significant cost to the environment, as training data-and computation-intensive models involves high carbon emissions. Climate change and its increasing awareness are forcing companies to use available resources more efficiently, which for the field of AI means developing accurate models in an energy-aware manner. We conduct a systematic literature review on approaches for sustainable AI development and organize the existing knowledge along the phases of the established CRISP-DM model.
