Abstract: Escalation of commitment -the tendency to persist with failing courses of action -can determine whether a distressed Information Systems (IS) project can be turned around. To disentangle the emotional and cognitive factors that give rise to escalation we conducted a between-subject randomized controlled laboratory experiment with 75 Master, MBA, and Ph.D. students, including data triangulation between neurophysiological and behavioral measures. This study successfully replicates the bias in the context of IS project distress, provides evidence for a psychophysiological link, supports the predictions on the role of negative and complex emotional states of self-justification theory over coping theory, and adds to a better understanding of how escalation tendency changes over time due to learning effects. Our findings contribute to enhancing decision-making in uncertain environments by using cognitive and emotional markers and thereby provide the foundation for developing neuro-adaptive de-escalation strategies. Abstract: Smart charging has the potential to shift peak load to times of lower demand, which better exploits renewable generation and enhances grid resilience. For increased effectiveness, smart charging requires access to data that consumers might be hesitant to share. To explore which data consumers would share and which factors influence this decision, we adopt the Barth and de Jong's risk-benefit calculation framework to smart charging and conduct an online-survey (n = 479). We find that most respondents who would share charging details with a smart charging application, are ambivalent about location data and would never share calendar details. When presented with concrete monetary rewards, participants lose their initial reservations and would share all data for an amount dependent on the data's sensitivity. Thus, our study contributes to research on the privacy paradox by highlighting the importance of calculations between perceived risks and benefits for the decision to share data. Collapse

Abstract: The convergence of gaming and gambling has become increasingly prominent in recent years, most notably in the context of esports. Consequently, there has been a recent surge of literature investigating this phenomenon. This convergence is often driven by the commercial advantages it offers, yet there are concerns over the effects of mixing gambling with gaming, both in relation to the quality of experiences, and possible ethical problems. In this scoping review of the related corpus, we explore the development of work addressing the presence of gambling associated with digital games; examining methodologies, research topics, the specific gambling activities addressed, and identifying gaps present in the field. The body of literature reviewed consists of peer-reviewed, English language publications (n=132). Our findings indicate a sharp increase in yearly publications in the late 2010s, attributed partly due to rising interest in novel gambling activities, such as loot boxes. We recommend future research incorporates both qualitative and mixed methods research to provide the field with results unavailable at current time. Collapse

Abstract: Most of the theories used in the behavioral security literature explain the variance in intentions to act securely. Yet, individuals often fail to act on their intentions. This disconnect is referred to as the intention-behavior gap. Most theories propose a single structural path between intentions and actual behaviors with the expectation that individuals will act on their intentions. The purpose of our paper is to investigate this intention-behavior gap in the context of the volitional adoption of information security technologies. To do so, we conducted a two-phased qualitative study of the adoption of a two-factor authentication (2FA) service. In our bottom-up investigation, we discovered emergent themes related to the four functional areas of attitudes (i.e., functional attitude theory). Our paper contributes to the behavioral security literature by suggesting that individuals must change their negative attitudes related to different functional areas to start to reduce the intention-behavior gap. Abstract: Regardless of what security professionals do to motivate personal users to adopt security technologies volitionally, the end result seems to be the same-low adoption rates. To increase these rates, we propose activating their positive psychological capital (PsyCap), which consists of hope, self-efficacy, resilience, and optimism (i.e., their "HERO within"). We propose that greater PsyCap toward a security technology is associated with greater adoption rates (and intentions thereof) because positivity increases motivation. We further posit that PsyCap both moderates and is moderated by other constructs. We suggest that personal users' conditioned fear from the security threat moderates the effect of PsyCap on adoption intentions because some fear is necessary to activate their positive PsyCap to form their behavioral intentions to adopt security technologies. We further hypothesize that PsyCap moderates the effect of adoption intentions on actual adoption rates because activating an individual's HERO within encourages individuals to exert the effort necessary to translate their intentions into actual adoption. Finally, we theorize that enhancing fear appeal messages with appeals to an individual's HERO has a greater effect on volitional adoption rates relative to messages without these PsyCap-related appeals. To support our hypotheses, we conducted two experiments using the volitional adoption of a password manager application and a two-factor authentication (2FA) service. Abstract: As artificial intelligence (AI) systems increasingly make impactful decisions in the workplace, issues of explainability have gained prominence. However, current debates around explainability of AI either take on a technical perspective or focus on the use of AI for augmentation, in which professionals can decide to ignore or override AI outputs when hindered by opacity. Given that current AI tools have the increasing ability to act on their own, this calls for a deeper understanding of how professionals manage explainability in cases of AI automation. Building on a comparative field study, we identify different practices that professionals enacted to produce post hoc explanations to clients of decisions made by AI tools. These practices varied depending on whether professionals relied on their own expertise versus AI techniques and whether they deeply engaged with the AI tool in constructing explanations. Abstract: The Covid-19 pandemic has severely disrupted traditional on-site education. One currently deployed alternative are hybrid education formats, which combine online and on-site elements. To successfully orchestrate these formats, educators and educational institutions need to understand the challenges and opportunities hybrid education can pose to both students and educators. This is especially true when hybrid education allows for asynchrony of the learning location, e.g. allowing students to choose whether they attend online or on-site. To understand these challenges and opportunities, we deployed a qualitative research design and identified three challenges and three opportunities of hybrid education allowing location asynchrony. We discuss these findings and highlight three larger underlying themes (balancing flexibility with complexity, the challenge of interpersonal connectedness in highly diverse settings, and digital proficiency), including sometimes opposing perspectives of students and educators.
