Abstract: Mobile dating applications like Bumble andTinder have grown in popularity, increasingly attracting scholarly attention. Our study focuses on the impact of politeness strategies and imposition on conversational outcomes on mobile dating apps. Using a 2 by 2 factorial design we examine the impact of degree of directness and imposition impact on perceptions of potential romantic partners and attitudes toward intensifying a relationship. We found that indirectness (a higher-order politeness strategy) and requests for face-to-face dates (high imposition) were positively associated with 1) attitudes toward intensifying a relationship, and 2) the perceived likeability of an interactional partner. Indirect politeness strategies more often resulted in request compliance and rejection strategies varied based on degrees of directness and the nature of the requests. Further exploration of how individuals evaluate imposition as it relates to requests for transitioning conversations from a mobile dating platform to faceto-face, is needed. Collapse

Abstract: Smart traffic management initiatives are a growing trend in many cities. While they have the potential to fundamentally improve traffic in urban areas, their success is determined by the citizens' use of the applications developed in related projects. However, citizens are rarely involved in the requirements elicitation or development process encompassed within such initiatives, even despite research showing the high potential of user-centric software development. In a multiple-methods approach combining focus group discussions and a quantitative survey, we investigate how citizens can be integrated in the specification process of data-driven traffic management applications and whether their involvement can influence the intention to use those applications in the future. With our findings, we contribute to the field of user-centric software design in information systems research applied to smart cities and offer insights into citizen involvement in that context. Abstract: Several organisations have introduced a new leadership role, the Chief Digital Officer (CDO), as a centralised role in their top management team (TMT), tasked with accelerating and coordinating their digital transformation. While previous research proposes a complementary, tight alignment between the CDO and the Chief Information Officer (CIO), role redundancies and the fight for recognition and resources also suggest an inherent tension. We provide insights into the CIO-CDO collaboration quality based on role, TMT cooperation, conflict theory, and a dyadic design approach of 11 CIO-CDO relationships with 33 expert interviews in two waves. Our findings indicate that the CIO-CDO relationship may not always be as complementary as proposed in the literature; instead, in the vast majority of our dyads, there is too much role conflict to achieve tight alignment, leading to separation behaviour between the roles. We identify the involvement in the introduction of the other role, the CIO demand-side orientation, and the CDO supply-side orientation as important contingency factors determining the quality of the CIO-CDO relationship. Finally, unless the CIO-CDO relationship resembles a perfect match, a unified Chief Digital and Information Officer (CDIO) role may better resolve the challenges we identify in our sample’s dyads. Our insights extend the understanding of the CIO-CDO relationship. Collapse

Abstract: Experiential offerings such as spirits tastings, craft workshops, creative meal preparation, or relaxation and wellness activities are difficult to digitalize because they rely on hedonic multisensory stimulation through interactions with experiential artefacts (e.g., spirits), spaces (e.g., a cellar), or actors (e.g., a tasting leader) to create value to participants. However, not least since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic have commercial providers started to develop digitalized experiential offerings. Through a multiple-case study of seven German providers, we explore how they reconfigured the value creation architecture of their newly developed digitalized offerings by retaining, augmenting, and compressing key experiential components. We also trace how these digitalization efforts changed how providers could capture value from the provision of digitalized offerings through digital scaling, dynamic provisioning, and offering-based learning. These findings allow us to contribute to the literature on digital value creation and capture as well as digital product and service innovation. Collapse

Abstract: The dissemination of fake news intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, in this paper we propose a process-based model grounded on the diffusion of innovations theory to investigate how fake news was shared via social media. Accordingly, data was categorized according to the taxonomy of process, namely: input, output, players and activities. We found that individual decision-making traits, fake news perceived features and communication channel attributes are determinants of a personal attitude vis-à-vis a received fake news. The attitude then leads to the decision of whether or not to believe in the fake news, while confirmation conveys to the spread of same. In this way, social media, mediated by the power of algorithms and echo chambers, increase the chance of spreading misinformation. Collapse

Abstract: Accurately predicting the sales trajectory of a product in its life cycle is critically important for firms’ medium- and long-term planning. Because classic product-diffusion models such as the Bass model consider only initial product purchases, they are ill-fitted for sales prediction for today’s technology products with a shorter life cycle and frequent repeat purchases or subscription renewals. Despite the long tradition of product diffusion research, there exists no viable model option when repeat purchases constitute a large proportion of product sales. The present study introduces a new sales growth model, termed the generalized diffusion model with repeat purchases (GDMR), to fill this void. The GDMR formulates the growth rate of sales using a noninteger-order integral equation rather than the integer-order differential equation typically adopted in existing diffusion models. The GDMR is parsimonious and easy to implement. Empirical results show that the GDMR fits sales data with varying proportions of repeat purchases quite well, making it suitable for predicting sales of a wide variety of products. In addition, the GDMR can be extended to incorporate marketing mix variables, thus enhancing its applicability in business decision making. Furthermore, using both real and simulated data, we show that the GDMR can reliably recover a product’s adoption trend using only sales data, thus cementing its theoretical validity and empirical effectiveness. Abstract: We examine the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in facilitating a change in innovation directions after a leadership change. Using patent data for firms that have gone through a CEO turnover, we find that firms with greater AI investment are more successful in changing their innovation directions. The effect of AI is driven principally by the continued development of innovation in areas that are modestly different from the past. Further analyses show that this effect is likely due to firms with AI investment that can enable strategic change in cultivating culture of exploring frontiers in innovation and managing R&D. A new CEO can direct more resources to the acquisition of employees with greater technological capabilities such as AI skills to facilitate the innovation change. Overall, our study sheds light on the value of AI in fostering the change in innovation directions during uncertain and turbulent times. Collapse

Abstract: Most of the information security management research involving fear appeals is guided by either protection motivation theory or the extended parallel processing model. Over time, extant research has extended these theories, as well as their derivative theories, in a variety of ways, leading to several theoretical and empirical inconsistencies. The large body of fragmented, and sometimes conflicting, research has muddied the broader understanding of what drives protection- and defensive motivation. We provide guidance to the security discourse by offering the first study in the literature to employ two-stage meta-analytic structural equation modeling (TSSEM), which combines covariance-based structural equation modeling and meta-analysis. Information systems (IS) researchers have traditionally used meta-analysis for structural equation modeling for such purposes—an approach that has several serious statistical flaws. Using 341 systematically selected empirical security articles (representing 383 unique studies) and TSSEM, we pool a large series of five datasets to test six models, from which we examine the effects of constructs and paths in the security fear-appeals literature. We compare and test six versions of models inspired by issues in the broader fear-appeals literature. We confirm the importance of both the threat- and coping-appraisal processes; establish the central role of fear and that it has greater importance than threat; show that efficacy is a stronger predictor of protection motivation than is threat; demonstrate that response costs as currently measured are ineffective but that maladaptive rewards have a strong negative effect on protection motivation and a positive effect on defensive motivation; and provide evidence that dual models of danger control and fear control should be used. Abstract: This paper analyzes the herding behavior that characterizes lenders' lending decisions on a microloan platform and explains how rational herding behavior can resolve the information-asymmetry problem, which is a well-known reason for the failure of online microloan platforms. Using a set of panel data on individual lending decisions acquired from Paipaidai.com (PPDai), an online microloan platform, we examine the influence of the lending decisions of prominent, experienced lenders on novice lenders to identify rational herding behavior. Our empirical analysis demonstrates that rational herding behavior can in fact efficiently reduce lender loss from borrower defaults caused by limited information. Although it is typically assumed that herding behavior is irrational, we find that it can be rational in this context and can thus shed light on why PPDai has succeeded while most other microloan platforms have failed. Accordingly, we make three key contributions: 1) we use heterogeneous herding effects to empirically determine whether lenders' herding behavior on PPDai is rational based on observational learning; 2) we investigate the moderating effect of borrower credit and novice-lender experience on herding, and we leverage this heterogeneity in lender experience to better explain loan results; and 3) because PPDai publicly provides potential lenders with a transparent credit score—in contrast to platforms like Prosper.com, which leverage hidden proprietary credit information from Experian—we further analyze the credit composition of prominent lenders to better understand the crucial determinants of rational herding. In fact, our follow-up survival simulations indicate that without rational herding, the total number of successful PPDai loans would have decreased by around 46 percent during the study period—a finding that further underlines the crucial influence of rational herding and the unique contextual factors of PPDai that have fostered it.
