Abstract: In this study, we examine user tipping behavior on China's leading online video platform, BiliBili.com. We analyze a dataset of 57,767 videos and categorize them into two types: knowledge content and entertainment content. We investigate the differences in user tipping behavior between these content types and also explore the impact of contributor experience and content length on tipping behavior. Additionally, we investigate the moderating effect of content type on these influencing factors. Our findings reveal that compared to entertainment content, knowledge content receives fewer tipping rewards from users. We also find that contributor experience has a negative impact on user tipping behavior, while content length has a positive impact. Abstract: Artificial Intelligence and Computer Agents are having a substantial impact on our everyday lives. The current paper focuses on the prospects of humans negotiating with computer agents in e-commerce settings. We conducted experiments where the subjects negotiated the purchase of mobile plans with computer agents acting as sellers. Three time-based negotiation tactics and two search mechanisms were employed in synchronous vs. asynchronous sessions. The results suggest that computer agents’ negotiation tactics and search mechanisms have significant effects on both the subjective and objective outcomes of the negotiations, while timespan has marginal effects on the agreement rate of the negotiation. Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the urgent need for healthcare entities to develop resilient strategies to cope with disruptions caused by the pandemic. This study focuses on the digital resilience of certified physicians who adopted an online healthcare community (OHC) to acquire patients and conduct telemedicine services during the pandemic. We synthesize the resilience literature and identify two effects of digital resilience-the resistance effect and the recovery effect. We use a proprietary dataset that matches online and offline data sources to study the digital resilience of physicians. A difference-in-differences (DID) analysis shows that physicians who adopted an OHC had strong resistance and recovery effects during the pandemic. Remarkably, after the COVID-19 outbreak, these physicians had 35.0% less reduction in medical consultations in the immediate period and 31.0% more bounce-back in the subsequent period as compared to physicians who did not adopt the OHC. We further analyze the sources of physicians' digital resilience by distinguishing between new and existing patients from both online and offline channels. Our subgroup analysis shows that, in general, digital resilience is more pronounced when physicians have a higher online reputation rating or have more positive interactions with patients on the OHC platform, providing further support for the mechanisms underlying digital resilience. Our research has significant theoretical and managerial implications beyond the context of the pandemic. Collapse

Abstract: Individuals are increasingly using novel fitness technologies, such as running applications (apps), to support their workouts. The literature has primarily focused on the use of fitness apps at the individual level (i.e., to improve individuals’ exercise levels) and few studies have investigated the role of fitness apps in facilitating group exercise. Consequently, there is a paucity of information on how to enhance the exercise participation of individuals using fitness apps through the use of groups (i.e., how to entice more individuals to engage in exercise). We selected a running app as the context and focused on a particular feature of this app called “Running Spot,” which facilitates members’ offline group engagement, a topic that has thus far received scant attention in the literature. Drawing on the perspective of psychological distance and relational cohesion theory, we propose that the Running Spot feature facilitating offline group engagement improved group participation in running. To advance this line of research, we utilized a panel dataset of 151 running groups from the running app platform over a period of 38 weeks. The aim was to empirically evaluate the effects of offline group engagement facilitation (e.g., Running Spot) using a combination of the difference-indifferences approach and the propensity score matching technique. Our findings suggest that Running Spot indeed promoted groups’ participation in running. Furthermore, the impact of Running Spot was magnified with smaller groups and groups that were moderately closely located to the designated running spots. Our study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on fitness technologies by revealing ways to support group participation and uncovering the complex impact of offline group engagement facilitation (e.g., Running Spot). Our study has important implications for fitness app developers in that it demonstrates that features facilitating offline group engagement should be prioritized to improve group participation in fitness activities. Abstract: Social media can be valuable for extracting information about an event or incident on the ground. However, the vast amount of content shared, and the linguistic variants of languages used on social media make it challenging to identify important situational awareness content to aid in decision-making for first responders. In this study, we assess whether pretrained models can be used to address the aforementioned challenges on social media. Various pretrained models, including static word embedding (such as Word2Vec and GloVe) and contextualized word embedding (such as DistilBERT) are studied in detail. According to our findings, a vanilla DistilBERT pretrained language model is insufficient to identify situation awareness information. Fine-tuning by using datasets of various event types and vocabulary extension is essential to adapt a DistilBERT model for real-world situational awareness detection. Collapse

Abstract: After the catastrophe that occurred in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro, especially in the city of Nova Friburgo in January of 2011, caused by heavy rains, the population's perception of the risks associated with heavy rains was greatly affected. In the other hand, the civil defense agencies have great difficulties to predict the impacts of rainfall due to the limitations of the existing monitoring systems and due to the existing vulnerable communities. This paper describes how sharing sensemaking between the involved parties can transform the population's perceptions about rainfall impact to meteorological data for civil defense by filling gaps in the existing monitoring system and enable civil defense teams to inform and to guide the expectations of population for a more efficient response in emergency situations. Based on the Design Science Research methodology that seeks to develop and design solutions to solve a specific class of problem, a mobile phone application to share information between members of communities and the civil defense team was developed and tested. The test to verify the sensemaking transformation was done through a case study involving volunteers from the community and the civil defense team of Nova Friburgo during a real rainfall situation. The results showed that the continuous and iterative flow of information enables the sharing of sensemaking, indicating the importance of this process for decision-making during emergency response actions. Abstract: Technology improvements for health care may enable nutritional health management for older adults.Research has yet to map the types of technology utilized to manage nutrition. This scoping review includes research in technology and nutrition to: (1) explain how technology is used to manage the nutrition needs of older adults; (2) describe the types of technology used to manage nutrition. The literature period was 21 years, but 86 percent of the papers retained were published within the past five years. The most common type of technology used is software, which is used to: (1) track, plan, and execute nutrition management and (2) assess technology use. The findings show that software for older adults lacks standardization. The internet of things is a promising area for research, and personal devices emphasize the tablet computer. The results suggest that managing older adult nutrition through technology is not yet a formable research area. Collapse

Abstract: Technological advancements in recent years have enabled the spread of automated decision-making (ADM) systems. Social scoring systems are a specific instance of ADM system, using behavioral scores to encourage pro-social behaviors. Building on a survey following an experimental study, we present two structural equation models to determine the impacts of different levels of transparency on the perceived legitimacy of scoring systems, as well as on people's intention to comply with the system. The models are built on well-established theories highlighting procedural justice and outcome favorabilities as key determinating factors. Our results suggest that the determinants of perceived legitimacy are strongly shaped by the level of transparency. However, transparency elevates subjective privacy harms. Our findings add to the ongoing debate on the transparency of ADM systems, by identifying a trade-off between the elimination of outcome favorabilities in determining perceptions of legitimacy, and increased subjective privacy harms, weakening people's intention to comply. Abstract: This study investigates the impact of emotions conveyed in crowdfunding campaigns on the commitment of backers. Based on language expectancy theory and research on emotional psychology, we propose the effect of emotions depends on campaign category membership and varies between social and commercial crowdfunding campaigns. Empirical analyses of 12,862 Indiegogo campaigns using EmoRoBERTa, a pre-trained neural network algorithm specifically designed to identify emotions, reveal that gratitude and optimism have opposite effects on crowdfunding participation for social and commercial entrepreneurs. In particular, optimism is positively associated with backer participation in social and negatively in commercial campaigns. Counterintuitively, gratitude is positively associated with backer participation in commercial but negatively in social campaigns. Contrasting our analysis, we further examine the link between a factual, neutral tone and crowdfunding participation. Interestingly, a neutral tone has a positive relationship with crowdfunding participation in commercial campaigns. The association reverses for social campaigns. Collapse

Abstract: Static stability is one of the most important constraints in the design and efficient calculation of safe air cargo pallets. To calculate the static stability of a cargo layout, base-focused methods such as full or partial base support are often used. Compared to mechanical or simulation-based methods, they offer high performance and simplicity. However, these methods currently reach their limits when dealing with the practical complexity of air cargo, making them difficult to apply in practice. In this research, we extend and generalize these support point methods by modeling irregular and multilevel cargo shapes, which enables improved practical applications. We follow a designoriented approach to capture air cargo requirements, design an artifact, and evaluate its performance. Our results show a generalized approach that covers a greater practical complexity while maintaining its efficiency. Collapse
