Context Matters: The Use of Algorithmic Management Mechanisms in Platform, Hybrid, and Traditional Work Contexts

Abstract: Emerged from platform organizations, algorithmic management (AM) refers to a data-driven approach in which intelligent algorithms are employed to automate managerial functions. Given its organizational benefits (e.g., efficiency gains), AM is also increasingly used in other work contexts, including traditional organizations (with permanent employees). Against this backdrop, our study investigates what AM mechanisms are used in different organizational work contexts and to what extent, and why, these mechanisms translate to other contexts. We do so by systematically analyzing and synthesizing knowledge from 45 studies. Our results point to seven usage patterns regarding the contextual translatability of AM mechanisms. For example, while we find that some mechanisms are used across contexts but with differing intentions, we also identify several context-specific AM mechanisms that are not (easily) translatable. We conclude by discussing factors that help explain the identified usage patterns (e.g., worker status and skill level) and promising avenues for future research. Collapse

Abstract: The family business literature has not addressed the role of information systems (IS) in the development of trust in family businesses. Through an in-depth analysis of a Chinese industrial family business in Qingdao, this study shows how several IS contribute to trust within the organization. Trust is conceptualized according to three dimensions, namely interpersonal trust, competence trust, and systems trust. Three main IS have been identified in the organization, namely WeChat, DingTalk, and the Enterprise Resource Planning system (ERP). This exploratory study analyzed how eight departments use these IS to understand which institutional logic is embedded within each IS. Each information system is conceptualized as embedded in a specific institutional logic which is not neutral in terms of trust building. These findings highlight the fact that Chinese executives use specific information systems to develop trust. ERP (here SAP) has a specific inherent institutional logic, namely rational managerialism, which contributes to system trust. Social media such as WeChat and DingTalk are embedded in their own institutional logic which makes them more adapted to specific activities. Unlike rational managerialism, the institutional logic associated with WeChat includes a strong focus on interpersonal communication, cooperation and problem-solving. WeChat is associated with the development of interpersonal trust whereas rational managerialism is rather associated with transparence and formality, thus unsuitable for developing interpersonal trust. Chinese executives use WeChat to create an informal and dynamic social space which promotes the development of stronger social ties with each other. DingTalk is associated with another logic which promotes formal information sharing, reliability and internal management. This information system contributes to the development of another type of trust, namely competence trust. The two social media contribute to sustaining interpersonal trust and competence-based trust which are critical in the development stage of a family business. Findings also show that family members need to create a forum without their presence for employees to exchange freely, thus creating a space in which trust can blossom. This paper concludes with theoretical contributions and implications for practitioners. Collapse

Abstract: Information privacy is not yet a mature “product.” The amount of monetary reward that firms should pay consumers to obtain their data is unknown. This paper measures consumers’ valuation of two types of personal information—personally identifiable information (PII) and non-PII, with the willing-to-accept (WTA) payoffs using a multi-study mixed-methods approach. We conducted two realistic auction experiments with 150 and 415 participants, respectively, as well as one interview study with 31 participants and a meta-analysis study to explain international differences in WTA prices between China and other countries. We found that while con­ sumers claimed that PII was more valuable than non-PII in the interview study, they did not demand a higher WTA price when monetizing PII in the two experimental studies. However, consumers became more cautious and provided fewer data items when dealing with PII, compared to non-PII. Consumers may ask for a higher price for non-PII than PII when they need to disclose more information. They also strategically select information being disclosed, if possible, to reduce privacy risk. Context only matters in WTA price for certain types of data, which is medical PII data in our case. Specifically, the WTA price for PII is higher in the medical information context than in the shopping information context. The meta-analysis shows that individualism and uncertainty avoidance are two key cultural dimensions explaining international differences in WTA prices. Collapse

Abstract: The concept of the metaverse has recently generated a great deal of attention in academia and industry, with an increasing number of educational institutions expressing interest in its implementation. However, existing studies on metaverse development in higher education are still in their early stages, leaving institutions with little guidance on how to develop and implement a metaverse. Employing socio-technical theory, we propose a comprehensive nine-stage metaverse development framework (MDF) that incorporates both social and technical aspects of a metaverse initiative, thus providing a holistic approach to metaverse development. Leveraging case studies of three large universities and blending them with MDF, our study provides evidence of the applicability of our MDF and offers a better contextual understanding of metaverse development in educational settings. This paper is useful for educational institutions that are developing or considering metaverse initiatives. It contributes to the emerging literature on metaverse development in higher education. Abstract: This study investigates how one personality trait of CIOs and CEOs, i.e., their empathy, affects CIO–CEO re­ lationships and then the outcomes of firms’ ongoing digital transformation. We hypothesize that the cognitive and emotional empathy of CIOs and CEOs can establish mutual understanding and trust, which in turn improve digital transformation. We empirically validate these hypotheses based on a survey of 105 pairs of matched CIOs and CEOs. The findings reveal asymmetric effects: CIOs’ empathy improves CIO–CEO relationships and then digital transformation, but CEOs’ empathy does not show significant effects. Abstract: With high profitability accompanied by high risks, startups are driving industry evolution and innovation. However, due to high information asymmetry, startup success prediction remains challenging. From the perspective of network resources, we propose a variant heterogeneous graph attention network (ResourceNet) to model how a focal startup can access and leverage network resources from inter-organizational networks connected by investment, co-portfolio, and VC syndication relationships, for future success. We follow the design science paradigm to develop the node and link-aware attention mechanisms in graph network representations that jointly explore the impact of different mechanisms explaining the value of network resources, i.e., reach, richness, and receptivity. This project provides contributions to the startup success prediction studies by demonstrating the value of network resources in a topological interorganizational network, and also important managerial implications for startup companies (to seek network resources for future success) and VC (to pick the winners). Abstract: Social media enables medical professionals and authorities to share, disseminate, monitor, and manage health-related information digitally through online communities such as Twitter and Facebook. Simultaneously, artificial intelligence (AI) powered social media offers digital capabilities for organizations to select, screen, detect and predict problems with possible solutions through digital health data. Both the patients and healthcare professionals have benefited from such improvements. However, arising ethical concerns related to the use of AI raised by stakeholders need scrutiny which could help organizations obtain trust, minimize privacy invasion, and eventually facilitate the responsible success of AI-enabled social media operations. This paper examines the impact of responsible AI on businesses using insights from analysis of 25 in-depth interviews of health care professionals. The exploratory analysis conducted revealed that abiding by the responsible AI principles can allow healthcare businesses to better take advantage of the improved effectiveness of their social media marketing initiatives with their users. The analysis is further used to offer research propositions and conclusions, and the contributions and limitations of the study have been discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Incumbent firms typically face significant risk of losing the relevance of their physical core when facing industry disruption driven by digital technologies. Existing literature emphasizes a digital first approach, whereby firm offerings are fundamentally redeveloped from a digital point of view, from the point of conception. While this prescription can help accelerate innovation, it does not tell us how incumbents might safeguard the relevance of their traditional physical core resources when going digital first. This is important, since major discontinuities in strategic repositioning, while often celebrated in digital innovation and transformation literature, create significant risks to firm survival. To this end, we conduct a grounded analysis of a European automotive firm's innovation journey over an eight-year period. We contribute to the digital innovation and transformation literature by developing a process model explaining how a digital first approach can be employed in a way that also safeguards the physical core. Abstract: Cryptomarkets are marketplaces on the dark web that facilitate the sale of mostly illicit goods and services between vendors and buyers. There were few to no studies that examine the cryptomarket ecosystem using data from multiple cryptomarkets collected at one point in time. This study strives to fill that gap by collecting all product information from eight large or notable cryptomarkets between June 2021 and January 2022 to understand the cryptomarket drug ecosystem, the products available, and identify factors that encourage or discourage vendors from shipping internationally. The eight cryptomarkets annually trafficked an estimated 13.4 tons of drugs for $239.2 million CAD. The characteristics of drug products will be examined to determine whether it influences the vendor’s willingness to ship internationally. Larger quantities and less expensive products were more likely to be shipped internationally. Specifically, products that cost less than $50 were more likely to be able to ship internationally.
