Abstract: Social media has been integrated into traditional e-commerce, creating an innovative technology-based approach to changing business practice and service, yet few researchers have attempted to provide an understanding of how this approach is changing consumer decision-making and purchase behaviours. Combining the expectation-confirmation theory and the expectation-confirmation model and information systems continuance, we propose a model for social commerce, illustrating how social media is utilised in online shopping as a three-fold process (pre-purchase, purchase, and post-purchase stages) from a consumer perspective. The model consists of three phases: social commerce motivation, social commerce adoption, and e-commerce effectiveness. Using two rounds of surveys, we find that (1) autonomous motivation and controlled motivation have positive effects on social commerce information seeking and sharing, and (2) social commerce information seeking formulates consumers’ pre-purchase decisions, thus affecting their actual purchase outcomes, repurchase intentions, and social commerce information-sharing intentions in the post-purchase stage. In addition, our study indicates that consumers may play dual roles in social commerce: as information seekers in the pre-purchase stage and as information providers in the post-purchase stage. Abstract: The movie industry is facing rising advocacy for racially inclusive casting. However, it remains an open question whether the promised benefits of racial diversification will materialize. Using data from 434 movies nested in 178 series released from 1998 to 2021, we find that, on average, increasing the number of racial minority actors in the main cast depresses movie evaluations. More importantly, the negative effect of racial diversification attenuates after Black Lives Matter (#BLM), a new media enabled social movement. Further, incorporating insights from tokenism and discrimination theories, we probe the heterogeneity in the bias mitigation effects of #BLM and find movie type and the core production team's credentials as important boundary conditions. The present research shows that a social movement that seeks to address racial inequality can, indeed, lead to meaningful changes in public opinions toward racial inclusive initiatives. It also provides perspectives for thinking about the mechanisms underlying such changes. Collapse

Abstract: Selective promotion entails the exploitation of resources offered by individual complementors to improve a proprietary platform’s competitive position. However, as governance decisions to endorse a particular complementor are made unilaterally, such promotion is less suitable for shared platforms that are ultimately owned and managed by an ecosystem of heterogeneous, autonomous complementors. We explore compatibility promotion, which involves screening a shared stock of infrastructural resources and making a choice as to which complementor to promote in light of the capabilities the platform seeks to develop. Based on a longitudinal study of a shared platform that evolved around a new technology standard in the Swedish road haulage industry, we explicate how elevating one complementor over others unsettled the governance of the platform and denied the promoted complementors the opportunity to generate the kind of value that their elevated status implicitly promised. This made the platform better off at the expense of the promoted complementor. Our surprising insight lets us theorize why compatibility promotion in shared platforms renders outcomes opposite to those of selective promotion in proprietary platforms. Collapse

Abstract: The economic dominance of large Internet tech companies, specifically the ‘Big Five’ (Google, Apple, Meta née Facebook, Amazon and Microsoft), is fundamentally complicating the organisation of society. Their positions raise profound questions, old and new, at the intersection of information systems and political philosophy, where companies have traditionally appeared in liberal democracies as economic operators rather than powerful political actors that threaten to limit citizens’ fundamental rights significantly through their operations. Importantly, the traditional understanding of corporate social responsibility is rooted in the liberal-democratic conception of moral labour’s division between public and private powers in a market economy. Focussing on this division, the paper analyses the various types of political power these companies wield and the complexities of regulating that power. Thus, it contributes to the IS discipline’s theoretical discussion by introducing political theory concepts that hold untapped potential for reconciling Big Tech and modern liberal-democratic conceptions of society. Taking these concepts as underpinnings for discussing six types of power, in turn (business vs. politics, democratic government, institutions of a market economy, companies, civil society and citizens), the paper offers the discipline example research questions to tackle and points to potential directions for scholarship. Abstract: New emerging digital technologies are evolving at an unprecedented pace. These advancements create increasing expectations for public sector organizations. However, we do not yet know much about the processes of these organizations when approaching emerging technologies. Such early innovation processes are critical to reaping the benefits of emerging technologies. We conducted a case study of a Nordic government agency to explore how a potentially paradigm-changing idea involving blockchain, evolves through an innovation process. We investigated the characteristics of early innovation search processes as a public sector organization approaches emerging technologies. Our contribution shows 1) how the search focus shifts over time -focus can be more about the solution, the need or the needsolution pair, and 2) how the conceptualization of technology plays an important role in the process. The findings increase our understanding of innovation processes in the public sector. Collapse

Abstract: Subscription-based crowdfunding is an emerging type of crowdfunding that is characterized by enabling regular payments from supporters to creators and a creator-centric rather than one-time project focus. To create a successful subscription-based crowdfunding outcome creators can utilize managerial levers e.g., information control and relational labor. However, thus far, little is known about how creators employ the managerial levers at their disposal and the strategic considerations behind their use. To holistically capture the utilized managerial levers and strategic considerations, we conducted semistructured interviews with 22 creators on the popular subscription-based crowdfunding platform Patreon. Our findings highlight four key managerial levers of subscription-based crowdfunding creators: information control strategies, supporter interaction strategies, supporter acquisition strategies, and supporter retention strategies. We contribute to IS literature by enabling further exploration of creators' thought processes in managing their subscription-based crowdfunding campaigns and offer practical advice to practitioners (e.g., creators and crowdfunding platforms). Abstract: First offers play a significant role in negotiations as they anchor negotiators’ perceptions and influence negotiation outcomes in favor of the first-offer proposer. However, negotiation is a joint decision-making process in which a first offer is typically succeeded by a counteroffer. The impact of a counteroffer has not yet been systematically researched. We propose that a counteroffer influences negotiation outcomes like a first offer. In addition, we conceptualize the “anchor zone” as the distance between the first offer and the counteroffer. We theorize that the anchor zone influences negotiation outcomes because it captures additional information compared to a single offer. To test our hypotheses, we conducted two studies: Study 1 was a vignette study (n = 190) in which participants reacted to a counteroffer that they received based on their first offer as part of a simulated negotiation. Study 2 was an online experiment (n = 212) in which participants negotiated by exchanging offers with no further communication. Our analysis suggests that the counteroffer is a significant predictor of economic outcomes. Thus, it works like a first offer, but with a lower impact. In addition, the anchor zone predicted how far the final agreement was from the first offer. Furthermore, we found that the third offer, the average concessions, and the number of offers mediated the effects of the counteroffer and anchor zone on economic outcomes. Finally, we discovered that a more aggressive counteroffer reduced the subjective value of both negotiators. Collapse

Abstract: Algorithmic management (AM) as key enabler for managing workforce in food delivery services has recently raised growing concerns about workers' occupational well-being (OWB). Existing studies mainly emphasize negative impacts of AM on workers' OWB, e.g., stress due to constant tracking. Contrastingly, a few studies show positive aspects of AM, e.g., receiving personalized real-time feedback. Getting to the root of these opposing findings, we use the job demands-resources (JD-R) model as primary theoretical lens to abductively analyze AM-specific job demands (AM-JD) and AM-specific job resources (AM-JR). Based on semi-structured interviews with 16 food delivery riders in Germany, this study paints a nuanced picture of AM, e.g., by identifying AM-JRs, that help to mitigate AM-JDs. We further find that job crafting, i.e., proactively changing work-related boundaries, increases AM-JRs and workers' OWB. Drawing on our results, we present the integrated DYNAMO Model, which shows novel dynamic relationships between AM, OWB, and job crafting. Collapse

Abstract: Companies increasingly rely on algorithmic management (AM) to efficiently control and coordinate workers, especially in the quick commerce sector, where workers are required to work particularly fast. AM often implies that workers face cognitive demands, such as behavioral constraints imposed by a tight management regime, or significant physical demands, such as a high work pace. Against this backdrop, we interviewed 18 food delivery couriers about how they try to cope with these demands. We find that, despite AM-induced behavioral constraints, workers engage in job crafting to better cope with demanding work conditions, to enrich work roles, and to add or extend resources, thereby increasing their job satisfaction and the perceived meaningfulness of their work. In contrast to previous studies where job crafting is strategically enacted by workers for long-term benefits, our study finds that jobs can also be successfully crafted short-term in an ad hoc manner.
