How to attract low prosocial funders in crowdfunding? Matching among funders, project descriptions, and platform types

Abstract: The amount of crowdfunding research that investigates funding success factors has been increasing. The existing research shows inconsistent evidence regarding how a prosocial project description affects funding success and largely ignores the issue of alignment/misalignment among different factors in affecting funding success. We suggest that funders’ prosocial motivation can be an important factor for this inconsistent evidence. We integrate the elaboration likelihood model and language expectancy theory and demonstrate distinct decision-making patterns from high and low prosocial motivation funders. Through three experiments, we provide evidence for alignment/misalignment effects among funders’ prosocial motivation, prosocial project descriptions, and platform types (donation-based vs. reward-based). While there are no differences for participants with high prosocial motivation across conditions, we find that participants with low prosocial motivation are more willing to contribute to a project that has alignment between the different factors, namely to a project that has a high prosocial description on a donation-based platform, or to a project that has a low prosocial description on a reward-based platform. This research sheds light on the crowdfunding and prosocial motivation literature. Collapse

Abstract: Teleconsultations delivered by a team of physicians can yield various benefits over individual-based teleconsultations, such as rapid response, diverse expertise, workload distribution, and a learning environment for junior physicians. However, formal hierarchical barriers may inhibit junior physicians from actively participating in consultations in the presence of their senior counterparts. Drawing upon the lens of hierarchy, this study investigates strategies for mitigating formal hierarchical obstacles by examining the influence of medical rank-based formal hierarchy on physician participation and exploring the moderating effects of three informal hierarchical factors: gender stereotypes, platform-given informal hierarchy, and reputation-given informal hierarchy. We analyzed data from a prominent Chinese teleconsultation platform to derive our findings. This research aims to contribute to the literature on hierarchy, online health IT, and gender stereotypes while providing practical insights for effectively motivating and managing physicians in team-based teleconsultation services. Abstract: This study advances the IS literature by investigating the effects of visualization on promoting sustainability knowledge and pro-environmental behaviors. Specifically, drawing on the visualization literature, we explain how the key visualization features, expectancy illustration, and interactivity affect individuals' understanding of the impact of their behaviors on the environment, encouraging pro-environmental behaviors. Additionally, we draw on the pedagogy literature to explicate that the effects of visualization on learning outcomes and pro-environmental practices can be explained through individuals' psychological responses in their course of interpreting the visualization. Collectively, this study presents our endeavor in understanding the roles of visualization in ecological discourse by integrating the visualization literature and sustainability research. Moreover, by unboxing individuals' psychological processes in interpreting visualization, we offer a fresh perspective to understanding the promises and challenges of using visualization for knowledge acquisition. Abstract: The General Data Protection Regulation (GDRP) is considered a significant step in global privacy laws. Our paper reveals counterintuitive and heterogeneous effects of GDPR on business performance in the digital products market from an international trade perspective. Based on a unique dataset, we empirically examine whether the rollout of the GDPR affects internal and external mobile app performance in European countries by using a difference-in-differences framework. We find that, in European countries, the implementation of GDPR has significantly increased the performance of mobile apps published outside the EU and decreased the performance of mobile apps published within the EU. We further conduct comprehensive robustness checks and explore the mechanisms. This paper reveals that given the more stringent privacy control instituted by GDPR, consumer privacy concerns over foreign products or services largely reduce. European citizens are more open-minded and willing to use foreign digital goods after the rollout of GDPR. Collapse

Abstract: A new form of online retailing, curated subscription services, is attracting an increasing number of consumers with their surprise elements. Extant literature has explored individual adoption motivation but has provided limited attention to customer-perceived consumption behavior. This study investigates the determinants of customer satisfaction with curated subscription services across different subscription box categories based on expectation disconfirmation theory. Sentiment analysis technology is conducted to extract customers’ attributelevel experiences from 22,551 customer reviews associated with 676 subscription boxes. Results show that sentiment toward utilitarian and hedonic attributes of products and services is positively associated with customer satisfaction, with the sentiment toward hedonic attributes exerting a stronger influence on satisfaction compared to utilitarian attributes. Findings also indicate that subscription time and information disclosure moderate the relationship between sentiment toward hedonic and utilitarian attributes and customer satisfac­ tion. This study enriches theoretical research on customer satisfaction, offers insights into consumer behavioral research in subscription retailing, and provides implications for managers to attract more subscribers to the curated service. Abstract: Online shopping platforms attract consumers to purchase by offering discounts or informing them about the availability of limited quantities of cheaper items during a set time period. Offering goods on sale for a brief window creates a sense of time pressure and encourages impulse purchases. However, few studies have discussed the relationship between physiological signals and the promotional impact of limited time offers. In this study, we discuss the promotional impact of different promotion methods under time pressure and perform experiments using brainwaves and galvanic skin responses of 53 participants to reveal the relationships. This study surveys 501 participants to determine the promotional impact of limited time offers on customers using qualified experimented pictures to recall their feeling toward limited time offers. The analytical results indicate that timelimited promotions, monetary discounts, and online reviews significantly affect impulse purchase behavior. The experiential results show that promotion methods can arouse physiological signals and emotional reactions in participants. Finally, the research and managerial implications are discussed. Abstract: Deepfakes have garnered widespread attention for their malicious use. Despite its infamy, deepfakes can bring forth a myriad of benefits. Given the controversies around deepfake, it is unclear why people adopt this technology for various purposes. Through the lens of rational choice theory, we develop a research model to explain deepfake adoption. From the perspective of deepfake developers, we categorize deepfake usage based on two dimensions: purpose (utilitarian vs. hedonic) and valence (benevolent vs. malevolent). Abstract: While the IS field has devoted significant effort to improving written communication to disseminate academic research findings, little attention has been given to the issue of soliciting feedback from practitioners about these communications. This paper explores the question of how to engage practitioners with written communication that aims to disseminate academic findings. Three empirical studies are undertaken, each analysing various types of written communication using the lens of argument. Our results suggest two archetypes for supporting arguments: a warrant-using approach and a warrant-establishing approach, each of which offers different ways to conceive of engaging with practitioner readers. Several proposals are offered as potential avenues for better engaging practitioners via written communication. Collapse

Abstract: Cloud computing brings a paradigm shift in the software industry and changes the business model of software vendors (SV). Software as a service (SaaS), the most popular form of cloud computing, has been recognized as the fundamental change in the delivery, utilization, and management of software. While the transformation to SaaS requires changes within the organization, SVs must actively take action to attract customers to accept the SaaS business model, the so-called pull strategy. Drawing on the resource orchestration view, we propose that the antecedents (i.e., structuring cloud resources, developing service bundling capability, and leveraging cloud ecosystem) are related to the likelihood of an innovative SaaS, which, in turn, is associated with SaaS attractiveness to users. Our proposed research framework provides a guideline for SV to attract and persuade customers to adopt SaaS solutions actively. Collapse
