Abstract: With the wide use of information technologies including Big Data and artificial intelligence (AI), consumers' personal actions (their search history, transaction records, click-through behaviors, etc.) can be tracked, recorded and analyzed by the service provider (e.g., Google) to provide personalized services. Under the current regime, consumers usually hand over their personal data for free in exchange for high-quality services. As it becomes more and more commonly accepted that "data is property," should consumers be entitled to claim their property rights over their personal data? New technologies emerge to empower consumers to control their own data, and the service provider may need to compensate for the usage of such data. How consumers and the service provider should react to such technologies, however, is not clear. We build a theoretical model in which consumers have different sensitivities towards their data ownership. We show that the impact of the data ownership shift depends not only on the service provider's revenue structure and the discount in the service quality offered to non-data-providing consumers, but also on whether and how consumers are compensated. More importantly, if the service provider can endogenously adjust the qualities of services provided to consumers, the shift of data ownership may not necessarily benefit consumers, or harm the service provider. We also offer guidelines for data regulation policy designs. Collapse

Abstract: Goal setting literature suggests that individuals set their goals more frequently on temporal landmarks, e.g. the New Year's Day (known as the fresh start effect). What remains unclear is whether setting goals on temporal landmarks has also a positive impact on goal attainment. We investigated goal setting and attainment behaviours in the context of an information system dedicated to smoking cessation with design features to promote such behaviours. We collected data from almost 1 million unique participants from 2015 to 2021 and studied the effects of goals set on temporal landmarks on goal attainment for two groups: (1) participants in their first attempts; and (2) participants who continuously set the same goal. The results show that setting goals on temporal landmarks has mostly a negative influence on goal attainment for the first group. However, for the second group, setting goals on temporal landmarks is largely positively correlated with goal attainment. Collapse

Abstract: Data breaches can severely damage a firm's reputation and its customers' confidence. Firms must therefore continuously invest in security measures to prevent such breaches. However, the effectiveness of security investment has been questioned by both practitioners and academics. We illustrate the bidirectional dynamic relationship between information technology (IT) investment and data breaches moderated by threat and countermeasure security awareness using an eight-year panel of 311 U.S.-listed firms to provide empirical evidence that threat awareness broadens firms' scope for addressing databreach issues by investing more in IT than in security. Countermeasure awareness equips firms with sufficient knowledge and experience to ensure effective implementation of IT, which provides more comprehensive protection than security investment alone. Our results suggest that firms should evolve beyond the reactive mindset of solely upgrading security and begin nurturing both threat awareness and countermeasure awareness to address the underlying IT system issues that are the cause of data breaches. Abstract: Social referral reward programs (SRRPs) aim to incentivize existing customers to recommend a product or service to others. Based on the reward threshold, we classify social referrals into two categories: singletasking social referral (SSR) and multi-tasking social referral (MSR). Considering that MSR involves multiple responders, we explore how to design an effective reward mechanism in this new context. Our primary interests in outcomes include users' willingness to recommend and their continuous referral intentions. Drawing from fairness theory and loss aversion theory, we propose three reward models based on the keeping percentage of rewards obtained, i.e., keep-it-all (KIA), discounted keep-it-all (DKIA), and all-or-nothing (AON). We designed an experiment to test the hypotheses regarding the effects of reward types on referral intention and continuous intention. This study will provide important implications for research and practice in designing an effective reward mechanism in MSR. Collapse

Abstract: Inefficiencies and coordination failures in firm deci-sion-making may be caused by the lack of common or shared information. Game theory and information economics highlight complex uncertainty as a driver of such failures, so research is needed to delineate the roles of technology, digitalization, and cross-firm in-formation integration to address the problem within and beyond the firm’s boundaries. There are three rea-sons this is key to IS’s disciplinary development. Relational contracts within firm boundaries are pervasive, so maintaining shared information among decision-makers is hard. Thus, increased digitalization to reduce uncertainty is relevant for decision-making. Since interorganizational systems ease interfirm governance and shared decisions, connecting digitalization and firm-level transaction costs has become more importantt. The effects of uncertainty reduction depend on IS capabilities and effective cross-firm information integration. Weoffer new insights into performance differences for linked firms. Abstract: The increasing frequency of disasters poses severe challenges to communities. In this study, we propose the concept of digital community resilience, which refers to a dynamic process of using digital technologies to support community recovery from a disaster. Among various disaster stakeholders, the crowd represents a powerful force. The crowd leverages social media platforms to contribute to digital community resilience. However, the resulting crowd actions are not always seamless. Rather, they encounter ongoing boundary coordination issues with other stakeholders. We conducted a case study of China's response to COVID-19, focusing on the crowd's efforts and the transforming of boundaries with the government and the public. This study identifies three types of boundaries faced by the crowd -administrative, cognitive, and professional. We propose a process model of digital community resilience showing how different disaster stakeholders use social media to span boundaries after a disaster. Collapse

Abstract: Financial firms recommend products to customers, intending to gain their attention and change their portfolios. Based on behavioral decision-making theory, we argue attention's effect on portfolio adjustment is through the risk deviation between portfolio risk and their risk preference. Thus, to fully understand the adjustment process, it is necessary to assess customers' risk preferences. In this study, we use machine learning methods to measure customers' risk preferences. Then, we build a dynamic adjustment model and find that attention's impact on portfolio adjustment speed is stronger when customers' risk preference is higher than portfolio risk (which needs an upward adjustment) and when customers' risk preference is within historical portfolio risk experience. We conducted a field experiment and found that directing customers' attention to products addressing the risk deviation would lead to more portfolio adjustment activities. Our study illustrates the role of machine learning in enhancing our understanding of financial decision-making. Collapse

Abstract: Government officials in more than half of the poverty-stricken counties in China have recently helped sell local specialty products through e-commerce live streaming platforms. Yet it is little understood if such practice reduces poverty and boosts the local economy by encouraging local entrepreneurship. We conduct an empirical investigation and find that government officials' participation in e-commerce live streaming is associated with an increase in the online presence of local special products and stores, a manifestation of rising entrepreneurship and shaking off poverty. In addition, the effects of government officials' participation in live streaming are more pronounced in economically and technologically under-developed areas, suggesting that they help mitigate inequality. Our findings contribute to the intersection of ICT for development, poverty alleviation, and entrepreneurship and highlight the value of a public-private partnership that integrates government participation (the top-down approach) and market behaviors (the bottom-up approach) in poverty alleviation through entrepreneurship.
