Abstract: User engagement, a key factor in the success of social media platforms, has long been based on permanent content. A recent paradigm shift in platform design has led large social media providers to implement ephemerality features that by default make shared content disappear after a certain amount of time. However, very little is known about how ephemerality features affect user engagement and behavior in social media. Drawing upon the technology affordance perspective, we conducted a qualitative multimethod study involving individual interviews and focus groups. Our findings show that the affordances arising from features with varying degrees of ephemerality (i.e., snaps and stories) differ from those of permanent content features in terms of self-presentation, browsing others' content, and communication. Adopting a multidimensional conceptualization of user engagement, we show the positive (e.g., more content sharing) and negative (e.g., cognitive burden from context loss) effects for snaps and stories that should be cautiously considered by social media platforms aiming to introduce such features. Finally, we reveal new user behaviors that relate to sharing snapshots of fleeting value as snaps or experiences of transient value as stories. Collapse

Abstract: Drawing on the resource-based view, this study investigates the interactive effects of green information tech­ nologies/systems (IT/IS) adoption, environmental motivation, and IT–business strategic alignment on organi­ zations’ perceived relative environmental performance. We use data from a field study of 587 firms in China to test our hypotheses. The results confirm that green IT/IS positively affects the perceived relative environmental performance of organizations and that the interaction of IT–business strategic alignment and environmental motivation positively moderates the relationship between green IT/IS adoption and organizations’ perceived relative environmental performance. The theoretical and managerial implications of these findings are also discussed. Collapse

Abstract: This paper profiled blockchain studies in information systems (IS) journals from 2016 to 2022. Drawing on the 443 selected articles from 77 IS journals, we proposed a classification scheme from the IS perspective. Current blockchain articles are highly skewed, focusing on research agendas and system design. We proposed a theo­ retical framework by summarizing the current status of the blockchain literature and highlighting 15 future research questions for the IS research community. Abstract: Research suggests that women negotiators tend to obtain worse outcomes than men; however, we argue this finding does not apply to all women. Integrating research on social hierarchies, gender in negotiations, and intersectional stereotype content, we develop a theoretical framework that explains the interactive effect of race and gender on offers and outcomes received in distributive negotiations. With a focus on Black and White women and men negotiators, we predicted that stereotypes related to their race and gender lead Black women negotiators to receive more favorable negotiation offers and outcomes than White women and Black men negotiators and this effect is explained by ascriptions of dominance and prestige, respectively. Results of three experimental studies involving diverse samples—online panel participants, individuals selling items on Craigslist, and MBA students—support these predictions. More specifically, we find that Black women negotiators are perceived as more dominant than White women negotiators, and Black women negotiators are ascribed greater prestige than Black men negotiators. These ascriptions allow Black women negotiators to receive more favorable negotiation offers and outcomes compared with White women and Black men. These findings highlight the importance of jointly considering the influence of race and gender in negotiations. Funding: This research was supported in part by funding offered to Dr. Sreedhari D. Abstract: To improve contemporary machine learning (ML) models, research is increasingly looking at tapping in and incorporating the knowledge of domain experts. However, expert knowledge often relies on intuition, which is difficult to formalize for incorporation into ML models. Against this backdrop, we investigate the role of intuition in the context of expert medical image annotation. We apply a cognitive task analysis approach, where we observe and interview six expert medical image annotators to gain insights into pertinent decision cues and the role of intuition during annotation. Our results show that intuition plays an important role in various steps of the medical image annotation process, particularly in the appraisals of very easy or very difficult images, and in case purely cognitive appraisals remain inconclusive. Overall, we contribute to a better understanding of expert intuition in medical image annotation and provide possible interfaces to incorporate said intuition into ML models. Collapse

Abstract: The metaverse offers promising opportunities to enhance the experiences in virtual meetings. However, its limitations have led to the emergence of virtual hybrid meetings. This meeting format uses virtual conference rooms accessible via head-mounted displays (HMD) and 2D video interfaces. Given the limited research on virtual hybrid meetings, an exploratory approach is needed to determine key perspectives and dimensions. This short paper initiates a discussion on how hybrid meetings impact meeting experiences, focusing on employee collaboration. We also shed light on the role of user embodiment in shaping meeting experiences. Our early insights lay the groundwork for future investigations, which will explore how hybrid meetings can foster a sense of togetherness and boost well-being as well as group performance. Thereby, we support companies to implement metaverse meetings while addressing constraints such as cost and health concerns, ultimately enhancing meeting experience and productivity. Collapse

Abstract: As we stand at the dawn of the AI era, it is clear that scholars need to move quickly to understand how software that can generate new content based on its ability to learn from existing data and make decisions autonomously will affect how people work. Why do we need to move so quickly? Because the future is being written for us now by software engineers who are developing AIpowered applications and organizational leaders who are introducing them into their companies at a prodigious pace. We should take this statement seriously. As a student of technology and organizations, I am acutely aware that despite being social constructions (or perhaps because of it) early iterations of technologies and early organizational responses to them gain inertia fast. We settle into patterns that are reinforced by interpretations, norms, policies, contracts, and laws that lock us into certain trajectories that are difficult to change, even though they are of our own making. Unless scholars who study the role that technology plays in work and organizing can provide useful theories for how change is likely to unfold and with what consequences, they will not be able to shape decision-making and policy around AI development, implementation, and ongoing use. Abstract: The theory of planned behavior (TPB) is popular in social commerce research, but existing studies have yielded inconclusive and inconsistent findings. As TPB was developed before the introduction of the Internet, Web 2.0 technologies, and social media, it is time to evaluate whether its relevance, effectiveness, novelty, and parsimony may have deteriorated due to temporal factors and the emergence of new Information Systems (IS) artifacts. In this work, an extended TPB2 is proposed by integrating social support, and MASEM analysis was conducted using a pooled correlation matrix. The findings revealed that TPB2 can better capture the nature of social commerce, as it can explain 28.4% of the variance in attitude, 59.0% of the variance in behavioral intention, and 9% of the variance in use behavior. In addition, it indicates that masculinity and uncertainty avoidance are the most significant Hofstedian cultural dimensions. The theoretical and managerial implications are also discussed along with the research agenda. Collapse

Abstract: While a significant amount of research has identified individual founder traits and perceptions that significantly affect startup trajectory, relatively little work has investigated the interactions between these variables. Specifically, while prior research has shown that psychological safety, entrepreneurial self-efficacy, and entrepreneurial bricolage skills are correlated with firm performance, the linkages between these variables is unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between these variables leveraging data from 71 startup founders. Results suggest that team psychological safety and entrepreneurial self-efficacy can individually predict entrepreneurial bricolage, with the combination of the two yielding a stronger predictive relationship. Finally, findings suggest that psychological safety, entrepreneurial self-efficacy, and entrepreneurial bricolage are not correlated with firm performance, contradicting prior findings. Collapse
