Abstract: Around the world and especially in areas of widespread poverty, firms start their operations without registering with relevant authorities (i.e., in the informal economy). We explore whether firms that initiated their operations in the informal economy but later register have a higher propensity to export than firms that register at the time of their foundation. We reason that the experience of having operated informally provides formally registered firms with the advantage of low-cost and flexible exploration but also a domestic legitimacy liability. We suggest that these factors likely contribute to making foreign export markets more attractive after registration. Based on a comprehensive sample of sub-Saharan African firms, we find that, conditional on registration, firms with an informal legacy have a higher propensity to initiate exporting than firms that started their operations formally. Abstract: Blockchain's inherent characteristics render it a promising solution in collaborative supply chain networks. However, the technology still faces challenges in coopetition, as sharing business data on blockchains requires balancing the benefits of data transparency for process automation with concerns about exposing business information to competitors. This paper draws on design science research to iteratively design and develop a decentralized infrastructure that can address the coopetition aspects of digital delivery invoices in construction supply chains. As a result, design objectives and design principles are derived while experts thoroughly evaluate the prototype. Practical guidance for implementing digital delivery invoices is provided to enable coopetitive while secure data exchange. Our findings suggest that if construction companies want to prioritize network effects despite the growing complexity, they should establish channels and private data collections along with additional privacy-enhancing technologies to ensure secure data exchange across the entire supply chain. Abstract: Planning is critical for negotiation success as it facilitates obtaining superior outcomes. However, little empirically is known about this topic. We argue that individual differences are important to understanding planning behavior because planning affords greater opportunities for individual differences to manifest compared to other phases of negotiation. We conducted a series of studies with the aim of understanding how the Big Five factors and gender predict information search and preference while planning. In Study 1, we examined information search behavior using the Mouselab paradigm. When the search space was large, agreeableness predicted persistence in search, and women spent significantly more time on the task, and looked for value creating and relationship related information to a greater extent than men (Study 1a). In a more constrained situation or with a smaller search space, few associations between individual differences and search behavior emerged (Studies 1b and 1c). In Study 2, we used a survey design to elicit preferences for information type. In this task, multiple personality factors predicted preferences. Conscientiousness and openness predicted preferences for value claiming information, and women preferred value creating information. Conscientiousness predicted preference for value claiming choice of information through the preference for value claiming information. How individual differences manifest in information search and preference in negotiation planning is a function of both task type and complexity. Collapse

Abstract: The popularity of the maker movement has prompted extensive research on how the maker spirit enhances learning and redefines entrepreneurism. However, what is left unknown is the dynamic process of making as a hobby and how it may cut across virtual and physical media. To seal this gap, we conducted a qualitative study to investigate how online social networks and communities (OSNCs) may play a role in influencing making-related decisions. We carried out diary studies and semi-structured individual interviews with 25 arts and crafts hobbyists. The findings show that YouTube and Pinterest are the top two mentioned sources to facilitate ideation about what to make. Participants mostly turned to YouTube and Reddit to address problems when getting stuck. We demonstrate the direct and close relationship between tangible making and OSNCs as a multidimensional source, showing how virtual user-generated content can impact everyday hands-on practices. Abstract: This study seeks to thoroughly understand the organizational context in which Artificial Intelligence (AI) would be implemented, through a systematic review and analysis of articles published (up to 2021) in 31 journals on information systems, business, management, and operations management. Seventy themes are identified from the literature and categorized into organizational, information systems, technological, and people dimensions for the antecedents, challenges, guidelines, and consequences of AI implementation in organizations. A conceptual framework for understanding AI implementation in organizations is also proposed. Abstract: In the public sector, governments and the people they serve increasingly collaborate to coproduce public services. To support the coproduction of municipal services, specifically, local governments have incorporated various digital technologies into their information systems. How do digital technologies affect community residents' engagement in coproducing municipal services? Our analysis of the service requests submitted to New York City's municipal 311 system shows that both the introduction and use of the NYC311 app were associated with increased request volume in every community, but the app's positive effect on community engagement was weaker for minority communities, especially those with high percentage of black populations at median-low to median-high income levels. These findings help bridge public administration and technology perspectives on community engagement by showing how ethnoracial and socio-economic factors moderate the effectiveness of digital technology. Accordingly, governments are advised to heed these factors when adopting digital technology to support public service coproduction. Collapse

Abstract: Recently, the topic of research data management has appeared at the forefront of Open Science as a prerequisite for preserving and disseminating research data efficiently. At the same time, scientific laboratories still rely upon digital files that are processed by experimenters to analyze and communicate laboratory results. In this study, we first apply a forensic process to investigate the information quality of digital evidence underlying published results. Furthermore, we use semiotics to describe the quality of information recovered from storage systems with laboratory forensics techniques. Next, we formulate laboratory analytics capabilities based on the results of the forensics analysis. Laboratory forensics and analytics form the basis of research data management. Finally, we propose a conceptual overview of open science readiness, which combines laboratory forensics techniques and laboratory analytics capabilities to help overcome research data management challenges in the near future. Abstract: Unlike other assets, data’s value increases when it is shared and reused. Whereas organizations have traditionally exchanged data vertically with other actors along the value chain, we observe that they increasingly share complementary data assets with others, even at times with their competitors, to address business and societal challenges. Research on these new forms of horizontal data sharing and the emerging data ecosystems is still scarce. Building on the theory of communities of practice, we study a pioneer data sharing community comprising more than 20 multinational companies that developed an innovative approach to pool data management efforts. We derive eight design principles for horizontal data sharing, which we cluster according to the following dimensions: domain of interest, shared practice, and community. By offering prescriptive design knowledge, our findings make an important contribution to the emerging literature on cross-company data sharing. Our research also provides practitioners with actionable insights on how to establish and operate data sharing communities effectively. Collapse

Abstract: Many researchers and practitioners see artificial intelligence as a game changer compared to classical statistical models. However, some software providers engage in "AI washing", relabeling solutions that use simple statistical models as AI systems. By contrast, research on algorithm aversion unsystematically varied the labels for advisors and treated labels such as "artificial intelligence" and "statistical model" synonymously. This study investigates the effect of individual labels on users' actual advice utilization behavior. Through two incentivized online within-subjects experiments on regression tasks, we find that labeling human advisors with labels that suggest higher expertise leads to an increase in advice-taking, even though the content of the advice remains the same. In contrast, our results do not suggest such an expert effect for advice-taking from algorithms, despite differences in self-reported perception. These findings challenge the effectiveness of framing intelligent systems as AI-based systems and have important implications for both research and practice. Collapse

Abstract: This paper reports on a design science research project that develops a design framework for national innovation agencies in line with the principles and values of the social market economy. The study conceptually examines the tension between the state’s interventions in the economic process to foster technology-based innovation and the social market economy’s pursuit of a privilege-free and competitive economic order. The chosen design science approach encompasses five steps: problem definition, diagnosis, solution design, evaluation, and learning. Based on the design requirements and case studies of four existing national innovation agencies, the study suggests twelve design principles for national innovation agencies. Drawing on feedback from leading German economists, the paper proposes general lessons for implementing innovation policies in social market economies, using the CIMO logic. This study contributes to the knowledge base on how to support technology-based innovation through national innovation agencies and provides practical implications for policymakers and innovation agency executives.
