Abstract: Organizations use a plethora of methods and tools to help their members solve problems effectively. Yet the specifics of how individuals solve problems remain largely unexplored. We propose and test a cognitive model of problem solving that integrates dual process theories into the attention-based view. The model suggests that diverse problem-solving strategies emerge in response to how individuals deliberate. Three studies provide observational and causal evidence in support of our model. The first study explores the strategies managers use to solve problems. We use think-aloud protocols combined with content, sequence, and cluster analyses to extract the key differences in how experienced managers solve problems. Two problem-solving strategies emerge from the data: one emphasizes mental activities related to framing, and the other emphasizes mental activities related to implementation. In the second study, we use a mixed factorial experimental design and mouse-tracking analysis to uncover the causal mechanism that explains the emergence of these two strategies. We then retest our hypotheses in a third, preregistered, study. We find that manipulating attention toward mental activities related to framing increases deliberation aimed at restructuring the problem elements. In contrast, directing attention toward mental activities related to implementation increases deliberation on the potential contingencies and consequences of the solution. Abstract: A context-aware service aims at proposing suitable solutions for customer situations to increase their satisfaction. This goal can only be achieved if the customer context is correctly taken into account by the service. Even though smart service systems and knowledge-based systems have been investigated in recent years, few studies have focused on how to reconcile the two perspectives: service science and knowledgecentric, in order to maximize the benefits of each field in context-aware service development. This paper aims at proposing a modeling framework for the conception of context-aware service systems. While taking contextual knowledge into consideration, the framework defines the key constructs of context-aware services as well as their relationships and proposes a method comprising a set of patterns and a process model guiding the application of these constructs in a specific domain. The application of the framework is briefly illustrated to model credit card services for the banking sector to validate its utility and applicability. Collapse

Abstract: Connected vehicles enable a wide range of use cases, often facilitated by smartphone apps and involving extensive processing of driving-related data. Since sensitive information about actual driving behavior or even daily routines can be derived from this data, the issue of privacy arises. We explore the impact of short privacy assurance statements on user perceptions by considering two data-intensive cases, usage-based insurance, and traffic hazard warnings. We conducted two experimental comparisons to investigate whether and how privacy-related perceptions about vehicle data sharing can be altered by different text-based privacy assurances on fictional app store pages. Our results are largely inconclusive, and we found no clear evidence that such short statements can significantly alter privacy concerns and increase download intentions. Furthermore, our results suggest that general and threatspecific privacy assurance statements likely yield no or little benefits to connected vehicle app providers regarding user perceptions. Abstract: Nonadherence, particularly among men who have sex with men (MSM) with substance use disorders, increases the risk of HIV acquisition. Measuring adherence to HIV pre-exposure chemoprophylaxis (PrEP), and responding to suboptimal adherence or changes in adherence behavior remains a challenging public health problem. Despite the importance of accurate adherence measurement, there is no gold standard for detecting medication ingestion events in HIV research. Current adherence measures indirectly infer ingestion events or measure medication concentrations over time, yet such approaches fail to provide direct confirmation of ingestions and contextual information surrounding adherence and nonadherence. A digital pill system (DPS) -a novel tool that leverages ingestible radiofrequency sensors to measure actual ingestion events -may advance adherence measurement in HIV research. We examined and compared the willingness of MSM across racial and ethnic identities to operate a DPS in the context of PrEP adherence measurement and suggest potential future applications of this technology. Abstract: Modern power grids are undergoing many changes to meet the growing energy demand. A major limitation of traditional power grids is that they only allow for understanding the overall household's total consumption, which is typically measured with high latency over the entire billing period. Smart grids and smart meters, on the other hand, enable access to timely household data. When such grids are equipped with the ability to read device-level data then they can be used to provide deeper analytic insights into energy utilization patterns at a very granular level. In this study, we propose using Dynamic Time Warping as a distance metric for clustering to examine consumers' device-level energy consumption for four different geographic regions. Additional insight into device-level usage patterns for consumers is likely to lead us to develop persuasive IS systems that can improve energy efficiency and bring benefits to both power suppliers and power consumers. Abstract: We aimed to explore the patterns of electronic medical records (EMR) adoption and its effects on hospital performance. We analyzed hospital-level panel data from 2008 to 2013 using Bayesian regression and the Naïve Bayes model. Our research analysis revealed 38 different adoption patterns for 1,919 hospitals that completed EMR implementation (having all of the four components) and 42 different adoption patterns for 1,341 hospitals that could not complete the EMR implementation. We examined the hospitals' EMR adoption patterns that were not completed; but predicted as completed using the Naïve Bayes model. Our results revealed that the hospitals that completed EMR adoption showed higher performance in terms of patient recommendation and net patient revenue than those that did not complete EMR adoption. More importantly, most of hospitals that observed as "not completed" but predicted as "completed" showed lower performance in terms of patient recommendation as well as net patient revenue. Collapse
