Abstract: Augmented and virtual realities (AR/VR) have matured significantly in the past decade. As these devices have matured, security has become an important consideration. Despite the ability to completely re-create interfaces in the AR/VR space, the most common tool for authentication remains the traditional password. Passwords have many known weaknesses, and have been blamed for many high profile cyberattacks, leaving much to be desired. This study, following the design science approach and utilizing a cognitive walkthrough, explores the formative validity of a novel authentication artifact designed for AR/VR space. We report on our results, and identify that the proposed artifact exhibits good usability and security properties based on the feedback of technological and cybersecurity specific experts. Collapse

Abstract: With an excess of interconnected devices, Internet of Things (IoT) technologies offer an exciting area for information systems researchers; however, the inherently physical nature of IoT makes it difficult to provide hands-on laboratory exercises to remote students. Research suggests that enactive mastery provides the greatest educational improvement to individual self-efficacy, yet not all enactive experiences are the same, certainly not when individuals have no means of accessing materials physically. Through the use of a virtual laboratory and home automation IoT technology, we develop a method to teach IoT in remote settings where students can experience hands-on IoT training in remote settings. We experimentally evaluate the virtual laboratory by comparing student outcomes in a traditional setting using physical materials to those using the virtual laboratory. Results indicate that while student perceptions were lower for students using the virtual laboratory, this virtual laboratory was successful in offering students the means to perform hands-on IoT automation, with these students achieving equivalent performance metrics to those utilizing a traditional physical laboratory. Abstract: Cyberattacks can be considered one of the fundamental challenges that paralyze the progress of digital payment usage (DPU) progress among citizens, as consumers shun away from using digital banking services due to increased concern over information security. National Cybersecurity Commitment (NCSC) has emerged as a preventive cybersecurity mechanism for countries to tackle such cybersecurity threats. Previous studies have shown that a country's NCSC positively impacts the business and economy of the country. This study examines the effect of NCSC on digital payment usage (DPU) across nations by grounding our discussion on the institutional trust theory. As trusting belief in security measures is a culturally embedded characteristic, we also examine the moderating role of national culture through Hofstede’s cultural dimensions. We use multilevel models to analyze publicly available archives of repeated cross-sectional data covering 76 countries to test the proposed relationships. Our findings indicate that NCSC has a positive influence on DPU. Further, our results highlight that the relationship between NCSC and DPU in a country is contingent on cultural dimensions. Overall, the evidence suggests that a competent cybersecurity environment compatible with cultural values can influence the speedy diffusion of digital payments in a country. Implications of our findings for research and practice are also discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Digital platforms and innovations have greatly improved the mechanisms whereby the resources needed to start a business can be obtained; yet many at the base of the pyramid still have limited access to them because they remain disconnected. While digital platforms can help to connect the possessors of resources with the entre­ preneurs who need them, the mediating processes that those who are not directly represented in such digital spaces need to undergo deserve further attention. This study builds on social identity theory and the identitybased view by considering identity as a relational and resource construct and discussing three identity media­ tion processes and strategies: connection-, familiarity-, and credibility-building. The evidence for this study was sourced from Rang De, India’s first digital micro credit platform. Understanding the identity mediation whereby disconnected borrowers seeking finance can access resources provides important insights to the emerging field of digital social innovation for business and development. Abstract: The concept of a smart city imposes a unique set of requirements for the underlying ICT technologies for a successful implementation of services and applications for citizens. At the core of these requirements lies the complex data platform architecture which must be carefully designed. The selection of a particular data platform architecture incurs significant technical debt to be serviced in the future, as well as the integration challenges involving hundreds of stakeholders. Since services developed within the smart city ecosystem have significant impact on human well-being and quality of life, the process of designing data platform must be robust. Data mesh paradigm is a new approach for building complex information systems. It is particularly suited as the blueprint for designing data platforms for smart cities. In this paper we present the overview of the data mesh concept. Building upon 25 years of experience of developing applications and providing data infrastructure for the city of Poznan, we identify key challenges when using the data mesh approach to build data platform tailored to a smart city. We provide guidelines for successful introduction of the data mesh at sociological, technological, and infrastructure level. We also point to the usability of the data mesh paradigm in the context of digital twins, a promising vision of future services for smart cities. Collapse

Abstract: Servitization describes the transformation of a manufacturer to a customer-centric service and solution provider. Providing customer solutions requires the integration of knowledge from different domains, e.g., engineering, software, and service, and usually also entails that more knowledge-intensive business services (KIBS) become part of the manufacturer's overall business model. Against this background, this article investigates how manufacturing and software firms leverage knowledge in KIBS and corresponding business models. We developed a taxonomy that systematizes KIBS along the three metadimensions of value proposition, value creation, and value capture. The application of our taxonomy to exemplary cases from both industries shows different strategies of knowledge usage across these industries. Our findings can support the development of KIBS and help practitioners to understand different ways of utilizing knowledge as a strategic resource. Implications for research point to the need for better understanding the collaboration of multiple actors from a knowledge-based perspective. Collapse

Abstract: Depression is the most prevalent and serious mental illness, which induces grave financial and societal ramifications. Depression detection is key for early intervention to mitigate those consequences. Such a high-stake decision inherently necessitates interpretability. Although a few depression detection studies attempt to explain the decision, these explanations misalign with the clinical depression diagnosis criterion that is based on depressive symptoms. To fill this gap, we develop a novel Multi-Scale Temporal Prototype Network (MSTPNet). MSTPNet innovatively detects and interprets depressive symptoms as well as how long they last. Extensive empirical analyses show that MSTPNet outperforms state-of-the-art depression detection methods. This result also reveals new symptoms that are unnoted in the survey approach. We further conduct a user study to demonstrate its superiority over the benchmarks in interpretability. This study contributes to IS literature with a novel interpretable deep learning model for depression detection in social media. Collapse

Abstract: This study measures the relationship between tacit knowledge sharing and innovation in the Polish (n = 350) and US (n = 379) IT industries. Conceptually, the study identifies the potential sources of tacit knowledge devel­ opment by individuals. That is, the study examines how “learning by doing” and “learning by interaction” lead to a willingness to share knowledge and, as a consequence, to support process and product/service innovation. This study empirically demonstrates that tacit knowledge internalization and externalization (awareness and sharing) significantly mediate between tacit knowledge experimentation and socialization (acquisition) and its final combination (knowledge in action). While such theoretical assumptions already exist, they have not yet been empirically explained and revealed in a single structural model. Further, this empirical approach enabled a demonstration that internalization and externalization of tacit knowledge may occur consciously or uncon­ sciously with equal success. Even so, the study also showed conscious tacit knowledge’s greater impact on innovation. Therefore, an organizational effort to manage autonomous, informal, and strongly contextual tacit knowledge is worthwhile and creates the capacity for superior competitive advantage. Finally, this study also demonstrates that national context influences tacit knowledge acquisition. In the US, “learning by doing” is dominant, whereas in Poland, “learning by interaction” and critical thinking are more common. This might be related to factors such as risk acceptance that could be studied in more detail and provide opportunities for future research. Collapse
