Abstract: The sustainable success of sports depends on a well-developed amateur participation base. The important role of amateur participation is transferring to esports, a professionalized form of organized video game competition. While esports has enjoyed considerable popularity, concerns about its viability are growing, as its revenue displays an increasingly slow growth and is small. Recently, amateur esports has been emerging to support esports sustainability, although little is known about mass gamers' amateur esports participation. To understand the phenomenon and facilitate its development, adopting the serious leisure perspective and affordance theory, we investigate relationships between mass gamers' video game engagement and their amateur esports participation. Specifically, two serious leisure-based gaming experiences influencing amateur esports participation are identified, enabling us to confirm two game affordances for developing both experiences. This study enriches our knowledge of amateur esports development by explaining how video game engagement facilitates amateur esports participation from a serious leisure perspective. Collapse

Abstract: The use of video consultations to deliver healthcare has increased spectacularly since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, with applications in psychotherapy proving particularly useful. While generally perceived as an adequate substitute for face-to-face interactions, video consultations have proven to aggravate problems related to maintaining strong therapeutic relationships. We build on psychology and IS literature to present an embodied interaction system that can contribute to mitigating the derogatory effects that occur when the potential for nonverbal communication is reduced. Based on an analysis of behavioral intentions, we present initial empirical evidence that potential users are indeed willing to engage with embodied interaction systems in a clinical context. Our results also suggest that potential users expect the adoption of the system to be more arduous relative to traditional interaction systems. We derive implications for research and practice that can be used to improve interaction system designs and quality of care. Collapse

Abstract: Service robots play an increasingly important role in the service sector. Drawing on moral psychology research, moral foundations theory as well as the computers-as-social-actors (CASA) paradigm, this experimental study containing of four online experiments examines the extent to which the moral or immoral behavior of a service robot affects customer responses during a service interaction. This study contributes to design science by defining, conceptualizing and operationalizing morality of service robots and developing a corresponding vignette as basis to manipulate (im)moral robotic behavior in a retail setting. To investigate possible effects of the robot's appearance, we tested our hypotheses with two different robots, i.e., a humanoid robot and an android robot. Results from the online experiment indicate that the (im)moral behavior of service robots at the customer interface has a significant effect on customers' trust and customers' ethical concerns towards the robot. Abstract: Most manufacturing firms that undergo digital transformation fail to seize the expected benefits. A key reason is that those firms fail to extend their identity of operational excellence with a digital service provider identity, leading to tensions at the interface -the product. Although research has addressed individual aspects of organizational identity, how organizational identity evolves in incumbent firms remains to be understood. In a case study with a leading automotive manufacturer, we show how two conflicting identities lead to paradoxical tensions and how separating them through a spinoff shifts these tensions. Abstract: In the rapidly evolving digital transformation (DT) landscape, understanding organizational identity (OI) complexities becomes imperative. Leveraging a comparative analysis of AutoCorp and its spinoff, SoftCorp, this paper unfolds OI tensions in the context of DT. Despite advances in the literature on OI and DT, a gap exists in understanding how conflicting identities within a parent company and its spinoff can impact the organizations and the products they develop. We unearth that the dominant identity in AutoCorp, rooted in traditional manufacturing, creates tensions with the digital service-provider identity in SoftCorp. Additionally, we find that such separation may temporarily relieve internal tensions but introduce new challenges at the organizations' boundaries, affecting the digitized product. Our findings contribute to the theoretical discourse in OI and provide insights for companies undergoing DT. In our ongoing research project, we plan to develop an integrative framework reconciling these diverging identities for optimal digitized product development. Collapse

Abstract: Establishing accountability for Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems is challenging due to the distribution of responsibilities among multiple actors involved in their development, deployment, and use. Nonetheless, AI accountability is crucial. As AI can affect all aspects of private and professional life, the actors involved in AI lifecycles need to take responsibility for their decisions and actions, be ready to respond to interrogations by those affected by AI and held liable when AI works in unacceptable ways. Despite the significance of AI accountability, the Information Systems research community has not engaged much with the topic and lacks a systematic understanding of existing approaches to it. This paper present the results of a comprehensive conceptual literature review that synthetizes current knowledge on AI accountability. The paper contributes to the IS literature by providing (i) conceptual clarification mapping different accountability conceptualizations; (ii) a comprehensive framework for AI accountability challenges and actionable responses at three different levels: system, process, data and; (iii) a framing of AI accountability as a a socio-technical and organizational problem that IS researchers are well-equipped to study highlighting the need to balance instrumental and humanistic outcomes. Abstract: Satisfaction is a crucial construct in information systems research, particularly for investigations of e-commerce. Given profound shifts in the scope and use of e-commerce and the associated proliferation of information systems, we ask whether research should adopt a more encompassing view of information systems in e-commerce. Based on recent propositions in marketing research, we identify "experience" as a construct apt to complement "satisfaction" by broadening the scope of inquiry to include the entire order process. In a systematic literature review, we identify a variety of definitions of key constructs but find very few contributions from information systems research that take experience into account. Based on these findings, we outline possibilities for future research to move from exclusively focusing on satisfaction to directing attention to experience as an affective response to technology on a systems level. Such a change carries several implications touching the very basis of information systems research, such as the role of the IT artifact. In addition, we discuss implications for practice. Collapse

Abstract: Transportation is a backbone of modern globalized societies. It also causes approximately one third of all European Union and U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, represents a major health hazard for global populations, and poses significant economic costs (e.g., due to traffic congestion). However, rapid innovation in vehicle technology, mobile connectivity, computing hardware, and artificial intelligence–powered information systems heralds a deep socio-technical transformation of the sector. The emergence of connected, autonomous, shared, and electric vehicle technology has created a digital layer that resides on top of the traditional physical mobility system. The resulting layered modular architecture is similar to that seen in other cyber-physical systems. Yet, it also comes with several characteristics and challenges that are unique to the domain of mobility and require entirely new solution approaches. Although other management and domain-specific research disciplines have started to embrace the new opportunities for research resulting from this deep structural change, the information systems (IS) community’s involvement in smart mobility research has been marginal. Yet, we argue that our field’s uniquely multidisciplinary, data-driven, and socio-technical research lens puts it in a strong position to address many of the large-scale societal challenges encountered in the mobility sector. Therefore, we make the case for IS research to play an active role in delivering a smart sustainable mobility ecosystem that is beneficial to users, mobility providers and the environment. We contribute a research framework to direct IS research efforts while providing a shared understanding of the smart sustainable mobility domain. We also present seven IS research opportunities along the dimensions of this framework and propose concrete angles of attack which we hope will spur an impactful and structured research agenda in the area. Effective management of disasters requires thorough understanding of their causes, nature, and consequences. Affected individuals may, therefore, seek instant, trustworthy information from different sources including social networking sites (SNSs). This study investigates what leads individuals to seek disaster information on SNSs. The investigated potential drivers are source credibility (SC), argument quality (AQ), self-efficacy (SEF), perceived usefulness of information (OUI), and behavioral intention (INT). The results confirm the newly emerged source & argument quality (SAQ) construct, SEF, and PUI are significant antecedents of INT, which in turn influences disaster information seeking behavior (ISB) via SNSs. Abstract: Although cloud computing is associated with organizational agility, anecdotal evidence points to resistance to cloud computing by employees in information technology (IT) units. We explored the links between software as a service (SaaS) and organizational agility by conducting two stages of interviews with key informants in large organizations, and by employing affordance and inertia-theoretical lenses. Two basic affordances emerged from the retroductive data analysis –implementing quickly and sourcing independently – which in turn yielded two higher-level affordances: trialing alternatives and self-organizing business teams. We developed a model that explains how and why these four affordances enhance agility by accelerating the sensing-toacting process of organizations. We also describe how five categories of organizational inertia in IT units hinder agility. Our main contribution is how adopting SaaS applications enables orga­ nizational agility while highlighting the role of IT unit inertia in SaaS affordance actualization processes. Collapse
