Abstract: With a large number of mobile apps on platforms such as iOS and Android, app developers face a significant challenge in generating market demand. Apps can incorporate social features to share information and create awareness. We focus on the impact of these features and their interplay with intrinsic features in the head, body, and tail of the demand distribution. Using a panel of version release notes from the iOS platform, we develop a novel hierarchical deep learning model to extract intrinsic and social features. Our results suggest that social features help increase the demand for tail apps and are also useful for head apps in informing users about new intrinsic features. To explore possible mechanisms, we analyze how different types of social features (personal and platform), intrinsic features (common versus differentiating), and app quality influence demand. We find that social features that allow sharing on platforms with large audiences are more effective at increasing demand than those on personal messaging systems. Furthermore, within platforms, social features perform better on those with stronger ties, such as Facebook as opposed to Twitter. Our analysis of different types of intrinsic features reveals that social features can help increase the demand for all apps when introduced with differentiating or less common intrinsic features. Furthermore, we find that there is a negative effect on the demand of tail apps when differentiating intrinsic features are combined with platform-based social features that have weaker ties. However, this negative effect is limited to low-quality tail apps only. Our results underscore the differences in the effect of different types of social and intrinsic features in various parts of the demand distribution. Abstract: Modern technology is ubiquitous i.e., “always there” – available to us when we want it and engaging us even when we don’t actively seek it. This constantly available ubiquitous technology influences people’s perception of time. This conceptual paper explores how ubiquitous technology creates a new time vision we call ubichronic time. We argue ubichronic time is qualitatively different from existing time visions and highlight the new values and behaviours associated with it. Specifically, people who have an ubichronic time vision perform disparate activities that span short durations across the day, find specific tiny units of time valuable and cram many repeated activities into a day. We also argue ubichronic time will have profound implications on the way we work and as such propose new concepts and research directions on how the way we work needs to adapt at the individual, team, and organisational levels. Abstract: Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to significantly impact the educational sector. One application of AI that has increasingly been applied is algorithmic grading. It is within this context that our study takes a focus on trust. While the concept of trust continues to grow in importance among AI researchers and practitioners, an investigation of trust/mistrust in algorithmic grading across multiple levels of analysis has so far been underresearched. In this paper, we argue the need for a model that encompasses the multi-layered nature of trust/ mistrust in AI. Drawing on an embedded agency perspective, a model is devised that examines top-down and bottom-up forces that can influence trust/mistrust in algorithmic grading. We illustrate how the model can be applied by drawing on the case of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program in 2020, whereby an algorithm was used to determine student grades. This paper contributes to the AI-trust literature by providing a fresh theoretical lens based on institutional theory to investigate the dynamic and multi-faceted nature of trust/ mistrust in algorithmic grading—an area that has seldom been explored, both theoretically and empirically. The study raises important implications for algorithmic design and awareness. Algorithms need to be designed in a transparent, fair, and ultimately a trustworthy manner. While an algorithm typically operates like a black box, whereby the underlying mechanisms are not apparent to those impacted by it, the purpose and an understanding of how the algorithm works should be communicated upfront and in a timely manner. Abstract: The metaverse is intended to reflect almost all activities of everyday and professional life in creating a new experience of social interaction by merging the virtual and real world in an interactive environment. It has the potential to disrupt the way we interact, socialize and work and thus organizations pursue possible application areas. However, there is a lack of research on the organizational readiness factors to ensure a successful initiation. To address this, we conducted 17 expert interviews from different industries. Drawing on the TOE framework, we identified 14 factors and respective propositions for the organizational context. Thereby well-known factors such as top management support were adapted to the requirements of the metaverse, but also new metaverse-specific factors emerged such as standards and interoperability. Abstract: With the rising popularity of voice assistants like Alexa, Siri, etc., understanding the service gaps experienced by customers has become imperative. In unison, limited studies are focusing on the perspectives of dissatisfied customers. This research aims to address this gap by suggesting the antecedents of technology irritation and its impact on the overall performance of voice assistants. The study uses a mixed-methods approach by analyzing the data gathered from user interviews, online reviews from users, and also empirical surveys. The qualitative study, capturing both etic and emic perspectives, found problems related to responsiveness, usability, platform, connectivity, and compatibility of VAs. While the empirical study revealed that utility gratification and service quality have a significant impact on technology irritation. The findings also show that customers from negative high and low arousal emotion groups have varying perceptions about utility gratifications. Collapse

Abstract: The paper highlights the importance of data sustainability in the data infrastructures aimed at long-term knowledge discoveries. Data sustainability refers to data’s capacity to endure across technological and human generations, and it problematizes the data governance literature from a temporal perspective. Existing work has already moved the literature from the organizational setting to more complex interorganizational settings, highlighting discrepancies between normative data governance models and organizational practices. We broaden this literature temporally by examining and outlining research directions for data sustainability from different meta-theoretical perspectives – evolutionary, relational, and durational. Data sustainability across technological and human generations navigates complementary and competing temporal demands: Data need to transition across socio-technical regimes over time, yet be embedded in social and material networks to be meaningful; historical and present data also must remain available and accessible in near and distant futures, for going back in time and seeing new data linkages and combinations. We argue that data sustainability is critical in ensuring progression in social and environmental sustainability. The paper contributes both to data governance and sustainability literatures. Abstract: Digital transformation can produce scaling in numbers – growing organisational boundaries by adding new users, customers, or members. For membership-based organisations, such as social movement organisations (SMOs), digital scaling brings an inflow of new resources and members at a pace that previously was unimaginable, as well as mounting power and influence. But sustained rapid growth in new membership also can introduce a tension related to digital scaling and political or social impact. In this research, we trace this tension to member prototype ambiguity – that is, to a perceived variation in the attributes, assumptions, and actions of the new members entering the organisation. Such ambiguity can have a destabilising effect on collective identity that might significantly weaken the political or social impact of the SMO. In this longitudinal study of Amnesty International, we examine how digital transformation and scaling unveiled this tension and how the professional core at two of Amnesty’s national sections, Australia and Sweden, addressed the prototype ambiguity that ensued. This research contributes to the existing literature on digital transformation, prototype ambiguity, and social movements, by providing insight into the challenges and opportunities presented by digital scaling in membership-based organisations such as SMOs. Abstract: The current study sought to extend the Affective Technology Acceptance (ATA) model to human-robot interactions. We tested the direct relationship between affect and technology acceptance of a security robot. Affect was measured using a multi-method approach, which included a self-report survey, as well as sentiment analysis, and response length of written responses. Results revealed that participants who experienced positive affect were more likely to accept technology. However, the significance and direction of the relationship between negative affect and technology acceptance was measurement dependent. Additionally, positive and negative sentiment words accounted for unique variance in technology acceptance, after controlling for self-reported affect. This study demonstrates that affect is an important contributing factor in human-robot interaction research, and using a multi-method approach allows for a richer, more complete understanding of how human feelings influence robot acceptance. Abstract: Social media platforms foster creativity by helping creators monetize their content and resolving their disputes with copyright holders. These disputes often occur when content creators use prior work (e.g., musical works, movie or show clips, and video game plays) as baseline materials. We develop a content co-production mechanism for copyright owners to set a revenue-sharing split with content creators. Content creators, aiming for higher ad revenue, can dispute the copyright claim within a specific timeframe. We suggest how the proposed mechanism can help the two sides settle and avoid a trial in court with a sensible revenue-sharing ratio and dispute timeframe. We also show how the share of ad revenue can be made proportional to the contribution of the baseline materials. Collapse
