Abstract: This editorial's purpose is twofold. First, I urge the authors who submit Gender and IT manuscripts to The DATA BASE for Advances in Information Systems to be mindful of the lessons shared in this editorial. My hope is that these lessons from my unpublished manuscript would encourage junior scholars who study Gender and IT to persevere and not become discouraged by multiple rejections. Second, I call on fellow IS scholars to submit opinion pieces to this journal where they share lessons learned from their unpublished manuscripts. Collapse

Abstract: The use of big data promises to drive economic growth and development and can therefore be a value-adding factor, but compared to private or public organisations, the country level is rarely investigated, and that is even more evident for developing countries. Another topic hardly ever considered in the big data research field is ‘big data readiness’, which means the level of preparation and willingness to exploit big data. We address these shortcomings in the literature and focus on the big data readiness of developing countries. Thus, the first research question is: what components are required for an index measuring big data readiness, and how can such an index be designed? We use a design science approach to develop the “Big Data Readiness Index” (BDRI), which is then applied to all African countries to answer our second research question: how do African countries perform in terms of the BDRI? Our analysis yields country rankings that show relatively high BDRI scores for coastal countries, such as South Africa, Kenya and Namibia, and for islands, such as Mauritius. Abstract: For new product development, previous segmentation methods based on demographic, psychographic, and purchase behavior information cannot identify a group of customers with unsatisfied needs. Moreover, seg­ mentation is limited to sales promotions in marketing. Although needs-based segmentation considering customer sentiments on product features can be conducted to develop a new product concept, it cannot identify com­ monalities among customers owing to their diverse preferences. Therefore, this paper proposes an interpretable machine learning-based approach for customer segmentation for new product development based on the importance of product features from online product reviews. The technical challenges of determining the importance of product features in each review are identifying and interpreting the nonlinear relations between satisfaction with product features and overall customer satisfaction. In this study, interpretable machine learning is used to identify these nonlinear relations with high performance and transparency. A case study on a wearable device is conducted to validate the proposed approach. Customer segmentation using the proposed approach based on importance is compared with that employing a previous approach based on sentiments. The results show that the proposed approach presents a higher clustering performance than the previous approach and offers opportunities to identify new product concepts. Collapse

Abstract: The amount of research related to financial technologies (fintech) has grown rapidly since these modalities have been implemented. A review of this literature base will help identify the topics that have been explored and identify topics for further research. This research project collects, synthesizes, and analyzes both the research strategies (i.e., methodologies) and content (e.g., topics, focus, categories) of the literature, and then discusses an agenda for future research efforts. We searched for fintech research published in the last 20 years and analyzed 146 articles published in Finance and 70 articles published in Information Systems (IS) during this period in their respective A*, A, and B journals in the 2019 Australian Business Deans Council list. We found an increasing level of activity during the most recent 6-year period and a biased distribution of fintech articles focused on exploratory methodologies. We also found several research strategies that were either underrepresented or absent from the pool of fintech research and identified several subject areas that need further exploration. We also created four fintech topic categories to organize and classify this diverse research stream. Collapse

Abstract: Recommendation systems are widely used to promote product visibility and sales. However, past research suggests that they primarily benefit market superstars and therefore, can be detrimental to niche products. This is especially critical in superstar dominated markets such as the market of mobile apps. This study incorporates social network analysis and econometric models to empirically examine the impact of content-based filtering (CBF) recommendation systems on the distribution of demand in mobile app markets. The analysis results of two comprehensive panel datasets from App Store and Google Play suggest that CBF recommendations favor niche items and effectively boost the long tail of the market. Moreover, consistent with signaling theory, relative quality signals provided by recommendation systems can impact consumer decision making process, leading to a spillover of demand. Our findings provide important implications for developers and market operators to better promote their products in the highly competitive market of mobile apps. Collapse

Abstract: Emotions triggered by IT events have a decisive influence on IT use. Previous literature has focused on one point in time studies investigating the relationship between emotions and IT use. However, the process of perceiving an IT event, leading to emotions and changes in IT use proceeds dynamically over time. This research in progress paper concentrates on this process. We investigate how the change in perception of an IT event affects emotions and IT use over time. Therefore, we develop an online experiment simulating time pressure as an example of an IT event. During the experiment, data is collected at four different points in time. The data will be analyzed with a multivariate longitudinal latent growth model. We aim to enhance the current literature by capturing the dynamic changes in perceiving IT events, emotional responses, and subsequent changes in IT use over time. Collapse

Abstract: While the U.S. government requires diversity in providing equal opportunities, it is still doubtful how such governance-related corporate enforcement affects firm performance. This study investigates how gender diversity, the proportion of female board members in a firm, moderates the impact of IT investment on firm performance. We found a positive moderating effect of gender diversity on the effect of IT investment on firm performance. We believe that this study contributes to existing IS and corporate governance studies. In addition, it provides managerial and practical implications by providing empirical evidence of the effect of board diversity and IT investment and how their interaction leads to positive firm performance. Abstract: This study explores how bribery affects firm growth by focusing on the asymmetric dependence of firms on government resources and services. We conceptualize bribery as relationships through which bribery requests require firms to frequently interact with rent-seeking government officials. Through bribery relationships, such officials extort firms beyond the exchange of bribe money for preferential treatment, depriving acquiescing firms of time and effort and thereby imposing hidden costs that could be otherwise used for firm growth. We find that bribery relationships damage firm growth. Firm status such as introducing new products or not affects how rent-seeking government officials check on firms and calculate their extortion schemes in bribery relationships; bribery relationships damage firm growth more significantly for firms without new products. The damage of bribery relationships to firm growth is also contingent on institutional environments. Under pervasive corruption, firms in bribery relationships may increase their acquiescence to the extortion of rent-seeking government officials. In countries with high-quality governance, however, firms can depend on sound regulations and rules of law and government officials experience high moral costs of corruption. Thus, the negative effect of the bribery relationship on firm growth will be strengthened under pervasive corruption and weakened under high-quality governance. Using Business Environment and Enterprise Performance Survey and World Governance Indicators data for 28 Eastern European countries from 2002–2014, we demonstrate the multifaceted features of the bribery relationship and its interaction with country-level institutional environments. Abstract: We investigate how negative performance feedback affects board diversity, which is instrumental in shaping a firm’s strategic change. When a firm underperforms compared with its aspiration, its board is motivated to promptly address the underperformance. The board needs to not only help search for strategic alternatives but also quickly build consensus around its strategic reorientation. These two motivations lead the board to value two dimensions of diversity among its members differently. On the one hand, to understand the problem of underperformance and find a solution, the board is motivated to seek new expertise, avoiding redundancy in the pool of expertise already represented in the boardroom. This results in a higher level of diversity in director expertise. On the other hand, the urgent need to build consensus prompts the board to value trust and solidarity and to avoid potential conflict among directors. Because people perceive others with similar ascriptive backgrounds as trustworthy, changes in the board of an underperforming firm are likely to yield a lower level of diversity in its members’ ascriptive backgrounds. These changes in board are affected by the committee chairs of the board whose power and influence are significant in the boardroom. Analyses of the boards of 733 U.S. listed manufacturing firms show that when a firm underperforms compared with its aspirations, it increases the board expertise diversity, but decreases the board ascriptive diversity. When chairs on the board are gender or racial minorities, the negative association between underperformance and the board ascriptive diversity is weakened. Abstract: This paper proposes a computational model based on the first order logic reasoning, for managing discoveries in Polypharmacology for the purpose of efficient drug repositioning. The model uses computational reasoning upon advances documented in the published literature and thus is primarily based on the range of discoveries in biomedical science. The idea behind the model is to exploit drugs multiple intended and particularly unintended therapeutical and adverse targets and discover if they can lead us towards drug repurposing. Computational pharmacology is a very complex field, but reasoning upon its concept can bring us closer to the ideal poly pharmacological world of finding, developing and approving multitargeted drugs and use them in drug repurposing.
