Abstract: In the span of just a few years, decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) have grown into a high-value form of organization. A growing body of IS literature examines the decentralized, transparent, and equitable design of these organizations. DAO governance is commonly mediated using 'governance tokens' in a one-token-one-vote system. However, the inconspicuous role of tokens for DAO governance is rarely investigated. We present preliminary findings from a netnographic study of controversial decision-making processes in two large DAOs. Our cases reveal how top holders of tokens leverage their favorable position to enact unpopular decisions unilaterally. The findings indicate a discrepancy between the espoused values and enacted practices of DAO governance, as economic capital rather than social capital investment becomes the primary determinant of voting power. We examine emerging alternative voting systems and offer a framework for parsing these new initiatives. Contributions to the literature and future work are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Big data analytics (BDA) has strategic value for many large organisations. However, obtaining evident benefits from BDA projects requires complex orchestration across organisational boundaries and entities. The requisite ability to distinguish a potential BDA benefit in its' organisational context has nevertheless received limited research attention. Against this backdrop, we report a case study of benefit conceptualization in a BDA project at a large wind turbine manufacturer (Vestas). Using critical systems heuristics, a framework of systems' stakeholders, stakes, and stakeholding issues, we analyse how the stakeholders in Vestas make boundary judgements for the BDA benefits they plan to realize. This analysis shows how a BDA benefit is a complex system involving negotiations on how a benefit ought to become evident in the organization. We discuss the implications of this finding for how BDA projects can make their boundary judgements for planned benefits explicit and defensible. Collapse

Abstract: As information technology is considered a key driver of firm's innovation, the role of a chief information officer (CIO) has been emphasized. However, firms face frequent CIO turnover. Thus, in this study, we argue that it is important to investigate the impact of CIO turnover on a firm's innovativeness, and the spillover effect of CIO turnover on competitors' innovativeness. We then propose a novel approach to testing these causal inferences of CIO turnover. We found that CIO turnover did not have a significant direct effect on its focal firm. However, the spillover effect is significant and positive, implying that firms produce more patents when their competitors experience CIO turnover than if CIOs at competing firms had not been dismissed. Since losing a CIO has ripple effects throughout the whole industry, firms should consider the unintended consequences of their decisions regarding CIO turnover. Collapse

Abstract: Globally, Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) incur considerable capital investments towards the acquisition of spectrum, deployment of mobile networks, and marketing and advertising of their mobile services to potential mobile subscribers. The extant literature, which is mainly conceptual, suggests that such capital investments impact the individual mobile subscriber base of MNOs. However, the extant literature lacks in quantitative explanation of such impacts. We address this lacuna by proposing an empirical framework using a novel panel dataset of the four largest MNOs of India, during the years 2009–2017. We find that capital investments in the spectrum (both contemporaneous and lagged) and mobile networks (lagged) positively impact the mobile subscriber base of MNOs in India. We observe that a “triggering effect,” such as the market rollout of 4G (fourth generation) services, leads to an initial slump in the mobile subscriber base of MNOs, which is counterintuitive and signifies the importance of early network-preparedness on the part of MNOs. We also find that, in the event of the aforementioned market triggers, MNOs’ firm-size and potential to invest in the spectrum, in addition to network-preparedness, are crucial for its survival. Abstract: Social media communication, and its impact on individuals and firms, is becoming increasingly important in today’s age. Firms are utilizing social media channels for communicating their sustainability-related initiatives. The role of social media as a mode for sustainability-related communication by firms has not been widely analyzed in the extant information systems literature. Given the increasingly important role of social media for information diffusion as well as increasing awareness for sustainability practices, this is a critical area of research. In this paper, we use an analytic model to theorize, coupled with empirical analysis to test the impact of firms’ sustainability practices. We have validated our proposed hypotheses using an empirical model based on panel data of firms’ sustainability performance and their Twitter communication over a 3-year period. Through our unique mixed-method study, we add additional methodological rigour to extant social media-based research in the information systems domain. Our research has significant theoretical and managerial significance as we identify how firms utilize social media for sustainability-related communication and its corresponding impact on customer response. Our research provides actionable insights for policymakers, firms as well as investors and consumers on understanding and managing sustainability-related communications on social media. Collapse

Abstract: In partitioned industries, a small number of generalist organizations occupy the center of the market, whereas a much larger number of specialists populate the periphery. The role of collaborations within and across the center-periphery boundary in these industries has been underexplored. We propose that hybrid collaborations between organizations in the center and periphery—combining the broad resource base of generalists with the focused knowledge of specialists—encourage product innovation and result in enhanced organizational adaptation for both populations. We test these ideas in the U.S. motion picture industry, where film production companies face significant unpredictability of success and fluctuating audience tastes. We find that generalist and specialist production companies that partner to produce films introduce more creative content in their films compared with those that collaborate in the same population or produce alone. Generalist film companies benefit further from these collaborations through increased competitive differentiation of their films from other generalists in subsequent productions, whereas specialists experience lower exit rates. These findings suggest that interorganizational collaborations between generalists and specialists provide effective adaptive strategies to compete in markets with uncertain demand and shifting audience preferences. Abstract: One prominent stream of IS research focuses on cognitive absorption during technology use, which generally leads to favorable attitudes toward technology and increased performance. Another stream of IS research has examined outcomes of interruptions, such as interruption overload and decreased work performance. Do these two streams of inquiries, so far virtually independent from each another, in fact examine opposing sides of the same coin? Building on the autism research literature, this study presents a new theoretical model that integrates these two disparate sets of observations as opposing manifestations of one phenomenon, called autistic inertia, to explore impacts of neurodiversity on remote work. A survey is being carried out to empirically test the model. Data that we have collected so far have provided empirical support for the model. Implications for IS research and practice are discussed.
